It hasn't worked that way with a relative handful of coaches, who I truly think are outliers. You mentioned Shaw and Fitzgerald - those 2 guys are in really unique situations where they are coaching at academically-minded schools that they also graduated from. I don't think either of them really want to be anything more than "just the football coach" at where ever it is they happen to be coaching. Besides, they are really well-compensated already anyway. David Shaw makes more than Pruitt, for example, and he coaches at a school/part of the country that doesn't give a rip about football.

Just try it with Campbell and see what happens. Campbell had no ties whatsoever to Iowa St before taking that job. He isn't from the area, didn't go to school there, hadn't coached their previously.

Money will always talk. The way these contracts are so one-sided in favor of the coaches, they've secured the bag as soon as they sign their name on the dotted line.

Unless you've already made your generational money (i.e., Saban, Dabo, etc.) these guys can be swayed with money. It's lifetimes of security for their families.

Not always. Campbell has already made 3.5 million for 3 years. That's already generational money, compared to his Dad being a high school football coach. Since ISU loves him, he could probably be there 10 more years at a minimum of 3.5 per year with obvious increases. That's a minimum of 35 million dollars and most likely 40+. Otherwise, he could take Michigan at 5-6 million per year, fail after 4 years, and he's made slightly less and looking for another job.

We are talking millions either way, and being comfortable in life for you and your family does mean something at that point.

Right, he can sit at Iowa state and win 8 games and be looked at as their saban. It’s part of the reason guys like David Shaw, pat fitzgerald etc won’t even really hear offers.

But he would have to stay in Ames . . .

I mean, maybe he'll turn out to be a young Bill Snyder, but I suspect if Michigan or the NFL comes calling he'll leave.

Your current school loves you only as long as you're winning, and winning (for the most part) has a tendency to increase expectations, even if the school isn't used to being successful. If Campbell started regressing and had a couple bad years, there's no doubt he'd be on the hot seat.

Our folks don't want the baggage that comes with Freeze, so they're passing on him. They were seriously considering Chip Lindsey, but he's apparently going through some personal issues, so they are passing on him. Our folks were also considering Steve Sarkisian, but they're apparently passing on him as well. Lane Kiffin is under consideration and so is Mike Gundy.

Long story short, my source says that there is no real direction, and there isn't anyone already in place. Source says that this is shaping up to possibly be a bit of a mess.

Side note, my source also said that Gouge and Greene both wanted to keep Gus, but the donors flat out told them they would not contribute another dime until Gus was gone. Basically ham-stringed the president and AD to get rid of Gus.

Source also said a coach from ND is going to Vandy, so Gus is not. Said Gus is now considering Arizona State."

I keep having to remind myself that this administration offered Mike Gundy 7 mil per year to come here. They have the funds. It's a motivation to spend those funds that can be a problem. Freeze wouldn't require that much. He'd probably come for 3.5 to 4.5 per year.
