Napier has too many shades of Dooley for me.

Saban model
Small Louisiana school
Look at how he’s improved it there!

Dunno mates

Napier has miles of more (and better) experience than the Dooltabby had. He's also had much more success as a HC than Tabby. Napier's boneheaded decision the other night against Appy State is also a great example of why it is important to hire a HC that has previous head coaching experience... so that they don't do something that stupid once they get to UT. They can get all the dumb out while they're learning on the job at their previous stop.

Campbell/Freeze, with the fallback option being Fickell.

Chadwell, Napier, et al are "prove it" coaches. We've tried that since Fulmer was fired and it's failed every time. It has never been our M.O. to go out and hire a "proven head coach." Time to do something different.

I don't want another Saban-influenced guy. I know Napier spent some time at Clemson too, but it was before they took off and he's spent quite a bit of time around Saban. I'm convinced most of these Saban guys are just order-takers/button-pushers that Saban values for their ability and willingness to follow orders and do something to his exact specifications. I don't think these guys have a clue how to do it outside of that environment. I know Napier has been good at Louisiana, much better than Dooley was at La Tech, but that's a small time job. I want a guy who has a proven track record at a P5 job

That's what I thought. Get the loan from the SEC and make the needed coaching move.
PAC announced something similar months ago. But surely only for covid shortfalls imo.

But why does it matter? Borrow it from any financial institution and go get a coach. Will pay for itself in no time (assuming no donors will sack up for it with no influence on the decision attached to it).

Butch had 6 years of HC experience before he came here. Doolander had 3. Those two had a lot more dumb that had yet to come out of them.

Go get a coach that has been successful at the P5 level as a head coach, or turn Neyland into a flower garden.

Guys don't really leave their jobs that ofyen if they are successful. Fickell and Campbell would be the big two out there right now. Fickell is probably waiting for a Big 10 job, Campbell may be too. He supposedly turned down 6 NFL interviews last off season. I cant think of a single proven P5 coach that would come here right now, except Freeze.

We could get fired coaches all day. Herman and Malzahn would come here in a heartbeat if offered (and presumably fired by their schools). But of course, than you're hiring a guy who just got fired for not winning enough football games.

Well make them say no then. There's an easy way to find out. Pick up the telephone. That's all I'm saying. I totally see and understand how Campbell and Fickell would be more interested in a Big 10 job, but throw a wrench into their thinking. Make them seriously ponder Tennessee. Campbell turning down 6 NFL interviews could be a good sign; maybe that means he really wants to be a college coach and doesn't want the NFL at all. Maybe not. But ask the question and see how he responds to it.

We aren't even in a coaching search yet, and my feeling is that if we get into one, guys like Campbell and Fickell (and Freeze) wouldn't even be considered.

This is all coming from a place of not trusting our admin/boosters one iota to identify an up-and-comer. Up-and-comer hires have and certainly can work out, but I don't think our people are capable of pulling it off. We have to take some of the guesswork out of the equation.

I don't think a guy following the "Saban model" is a bad thing. Someone will eventually get it right. And it's not like it's a flawed model. Doubt anyone has failed because they tried to emulate Saban. If they were gonna fail, they were gonna fail regardless.

These are the only three names that move the needle for me:
Freeze
Fickle
Campbell
Everyone else is out of reach or unproven

of course the list we will get is
McElwain
Muschamp
Bobo
Steele
