Trash fire? The last 3 seasons they had under Holgorsen were 10-3, 7-6, 8-4. Finished #20 in the country in 2018 and were #6 in the country at one point, but ran him off anyway.
Holgorsen left after he lost all his talent. He left nothing at that program. We played them the year before they lost all their talent.

Let see.
Rhule, Campbell, Freeze are pupe dreams. Sark isn't terrible but hes also been with Saban, we don't need another Saban product.
We can do better than Napier.

Freeze is not a pipe dream - if the admin would hire him
Rhule - Somewhat of a dream, but may hate the NFL. So maybe not that far in left field
Campbell - If he is willing to leave the Big 12 and not hold out for the Big 10, is a possibility
Sark- Is not a Saban Product

I do wonder if Will Healy would be a factor in the discussion at all were we to make the change. He would take this job any day of the week.

His resume does not warrant a job as big as Tennessee's, but he's from Chattanooga and widely considered to be the next up-and-coming superstar. Maybe we strike a year too early instead of a year too late?

Another thing about Healy I haven't seen mentioned: Gerald Harrison is the AD at Austin Peay. Prior to that, he was Associate AD at Duke and before that he was Fulmer's "body man" on the sidelines. Basically he was his direct assistant. Will Healy would come highly recommended from Harrison and not only that, but David Cutcliffe's adopted son Marcus Hilliard is the Associate AD at Austin Peay.

This is a rant...

The thing that absolutely kills me about *waves all around* all of this is that there is a direct correlation between football success and enrollment. College kids aren’t “rational actors” looking 100% for a place that will prepare them for a future career. State schools are affordable, and they want to go to a place that’s fun. Watching your team get their f@&$ing teeth kicked in does not look very fun. Thank god for basketball and basketball fans, because that atmosphere looks fun.

The admin needs to take a long, hard look at their enrollment numbers and shrinking state support, and ask how that equation is gonna balance itself? Jack up tuition? There’s a supply/demand issue that we are already seeing. How do I know? When I walk around campus at Mississippi State I see UT sweatshirts and a lot of kids who can’t afford UT but wanted to go to a SEC school, and MSU gave them scholarships. UT didn’t. Also, let’s be frank here. Mullen’s time at MSU was a lot more fun than what we were slogging through at the same time. Good luck becoming “UVA.” UT was already successful being “UT,” which was the affordable state-university that could take poor, instate kids like me who grew up watching Tennessee sports, had high school teachers who talked fondly of their time at UT, and looked forward to being one of the rowdy idiots in the student section, and eventually mold those kids into top notch research programs.

I went to a doctoral program that is historically in the top 5 for what I do. UT prepared me better for that program than kids coming out of Harvard, Stanford, etc. I was an undergrad when Clausen beat Florida twice, and a first year MA student when Wilhoit beat them on the last minute field goal. We also had a streak on Bama. Recently I’ve met undergrads who go to Florida and Bama because they just assume that they are good at everything.

My overall point is that you can be good at academics AND athletics. More importantly, if you are a state school, athletics draws the tuition paying students that help your academic programs. You can complain that they shouldn’t be linked, or come to grips with the reality that they are, and do something about it, and that starts with spending the money on a go&$)da&$ed ball coach that can win us some games and stop making bs comments about sports being the front porch and do something about it.

signed,
-pissed off alum who wants to ask Brian Maurer why it is, if my opinion doesn’t matter, that I’m getting weekly letters and emails from UT asking for money. It’ll be a cold day in hell before I donate to the VASF for this dogs$8. I’ll just keep donating to the fund that helps first generation college students...

💯
Absolutely! Well said,
There are direct correlations between increased enrollment and successful sports programs.

I had the pleasure of Working with UCF s&c while coach O’Leary was there and the difference is night and day with the student body since Frost arrived and pushed the program to the forefront.
UCF is now the biggest school in the state and all of its academic programs have taken off in prestige too.

By the way, it all started with them hiring an incredible Athletic Directer in Danny White. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Holgorsen burned it down as he was leaving. He has had trouble at Houston too! Something happened, Brown did not have much to work with.

You are the worst at this. Literally every recommendation that you have is the worst candidate imaginable. Holy crap.

Hence why Freeze is a dream.
Rhule has been there 1 year, he isn't running away, yet.
Campbell would demand 8-9 million.
Name 1 coach who has been around Saban and done anything successful over a sustained period? They all try to turn programs into Bama. That doesn't work.

I don't think Sark is a Saban product. He is a pete carroll product. Just like Lane Kiffin is not a Saban Product. And I would definitely give Campbell 7-7.5 Mil

I think there are certain coaches you call even if they are pipe dreams just to hear them tell you no.
I wonder if that's part of Tennessee's problem...they don't like being told "no" so there are a whole host of coaches they don't even bother with from the jump. I don't see how it is embarrassing to offer a ton of money to a proven coach and have them say "thanks but no thanks." That's far less embarrassing than starting the search by scraping the bottom of the barrel and not even trying.

Of course, we still end up being told no by a bunch of coaches anyway.

Yes

Seriously I’m looking for something more than “solid”. You don’t pay out $20 mil to get to that.
I'm not going to go to the mat for him, but I think solid is probably his floor, and we might find out that with the opportunities given by a bigger program, his ceiling will be much higher. Kind of reminds me of Matt Campbell about 2-3 years ago. Beyond a handful of guys, it's a coin flip anyway.

Also agree with @Ace , Neal Brown is another one I'd put in this category, he seems to be making progress at WVU.
