The rules of football have changed. Defenses are so hamstrung it’s almost impossible to play receivers head up without getting a holding or PI penalty. Saban was quick to realize the game is not about having a shut down defense but receivers who can get open. Jeremy Pruitt is still trying to build a defense when defense doesn’t matter with the rules today. If you hold your opponent to 25 you can win. That’s where we need to go

Saban has opened up to the idea you re not gonna win every game scoring 24 points anymore because you can longer hold every opponent to less than that number. Even if your defenses is good by previous standards.

Having said that, eventually holding a team to a couple fgs instead of tds, creating an extra turnover, or just getting a stop or 2 more than your opponent has become the goal.
It still boils down to your defense giving up less than you can score on a given night.

It boils down to getting the best players and developing them. Philosophy, strategy, and X's/O's don't matter near as much.

Bama gets 25 first picks in the HS draft every year. They are going to look good no matter what they do.

Well it never hurts to have a lockdown D. Just ask the air raid teams or the run and gun or any team really when it comes to that one championship game. That said - if you got your scholly budget and you are rationing it out it’s probably better to lean towards speed and scoring right now. It’s cyclical though. Points get scored then they figure out how to shut it down...

Nah. It takes both to be great.
But really good coaches with less talent beat bad coaches with more talent regularly.
Pruitt and Saban could switch teams and in 2 years UT beats Bama

Doubt it. It would eventually happen, but not in two years.

31 Saban coached 1st round draft picks over the last 12 drafts while Tennessee struggles to even get guys into the league at all. Saban’s ability to not only win consistently but produce these kinds of results is his true genius.

You all loved and worshipped Pruitt. Now you've turned on him. Just like you did with Lyle and Dolittle
Uh...not all of us. Pretty sure I was against this moronic hire from day one, and took the heat on this board to prove it. Ditto with the previous two.

Please don't take that way from me.

I hated the hire.

I started to like Pruitt his 2nd year on the job until he started going full blown stupid with JG.

He’s not improving, he’s reached his ceiling. Get rid of the clown.

Never, ever liked him. Never started to...never even wanted to. I made the mistake, despite my misgivings, of giving him credit after the Missouri game that maybe we were finally seeing some improvement. Boy was that premature.

I have always found him unlikeable, borderline unintelligent, and wholly underqualified for the job. He's not yet done anything to dispel those notions.

As an alum I'll breath a sigh of relief when he leaves in the middle of the night or is unceremoniously shown the door. And I will wish him the best in his future endeavors.

We were 0-8 in the SEC when Pruitt got here, I doubt he's had the luxury of being too picky in recruiting in order to stack the WR position as Saban has the last few years. I think he's trying to build a team that's good at all levels on both sides of the ball, just takes time.

In the absence of top shelf talent, one must be able to develop and scheme...something Pruitt has shown no capability or interest in doing.

He inherited, and has recruited far better talent than Arkansas, Kentucky, BYU, or Georgia State and that's not debatable.

I agree...but that being said, IF our OL were the road graders they were supposed to be, AND we had a QB who was at least mid-upper tier, who didn't make turnovers in critical moments in the game, I thought our offense had the chance to be like some of the old ARK (McFadden) or Aub (Cadillac Williams) teams and control the clock and shorten games. If we did that, our D would be alot better also b/c they weren't on the field too much, or deflated b/c they just knew another pick 6 was just around the corner.

In order to have an air raid offense, you need a QB who can spread the ball around, and have difference makers @ WR. Right now, we have neither. So, you'd think all our efforts would be around having that smashmouth mentality, with a strong lean towards play action...but, we'll run the ball with authority for a drive or two, and abandon for low percentage passes, get behind the sticks and go on multiple quarter scoring droughts.

There are PLENTY of examples of this...even at UT. UT's high flying offense went down when Tony Robinson broke his leg. Majors adapted w/ Dickey, controlled the clock, ran the ball w/ a conservative pass scheme and played lights out D...all the way to a victory over Miami in the Sugar Bowl and #4 finish. More recently, Missouri, who never won prizes for recruiting won the SEC east a couple of times when they had no business being in the conversation. This is what I'm most dismayed about this year w/ UT. We had the nucleus of a good returning D, but have regressed mightily. We have a 2 deep talented OL on paper, but haven't used it to our advantage. We have 3 4*s and 1 5* QB on the roster, but can't get a top shelf performance, when other teams are slinging it around with much less talent than on our squad. Something not right w/ this staff...to the initial point...no ability to develop and scheme, from what I can tell.

That is the summary of 2020 UT football.
