I've thought about this a lot, but I don't believe the defense is nearly as bad as we think. They are on the field a ton due to our anemic offense. Now, all that being said, they played a decent ballgame Saturday, the offense just couldn't do anything with it to put points on the board.
Saturday was one of Chaney's better games. We seemed to be able to put a few drives together, just to have it stall around the 40 yard line. In Chaney's offense, a huge piece of the puzzle is shot plays. He set up, then dialed up some great opportunities to push the ball down the field and score, we just didn't execute. The offensive line play was bad, it's past time for Friend to go. Bailey is young and struggled with calling protections, but we need a veteran on the line to step up and make those calls for him. Usually that would be your center, but with Kennedy out someone else has to take charge.
Defensively, we struggle against the slant and covering the middle of the field in general, that's no secret. However, Pruitt's philosophy in the secondary hasn't really changed since he was calling the defense at Alabama, we just aren't executing. If I get some free time later, I'll try to put something together showing what we're trying to do, and why it's not working. We have played well in the run game defensively.
Contrary to popular belief, we're closer to having a good product on the field than you think. I'm not saying Pruitt is or isn't the guy, right now I'm leaning more toward isn't. But we executed during our 8 game win streak, and in the first half against Georgia. I don't know if it's a lack of coaching or a rift in the team, but we aren't executing consistently like we did during that streak.
