That's because Leach is so scheme dependent. He doesn't adapt his offense to his personnel; he forces the scheme onto his personnel, and it's 3+ years before he gets a team made up solely of "his guys."To be fair, Mike Leach is also in year 1 with next to no off-season to get that team bought in or familiar with his brand of ball. Everywhere Leach has been it's always been year 3 or later before things "click" it seems.
But to be fair he has already beaten a top 10 ranked team in his first season there.
On Kiffin: I never vilified him for accepting his dream job. I resented the attempted pilfering of EE’s using university issued cell phones and the social media trolling going up to his FAU stint. I agree that he has revisionist regret from leaving us and I also maintain that had a ****** coping mechanism for dealing with that regret.I’m with ya.
Going back over the coaches we’ve had post Fulmer, the mistakes made were easily avoidable.
Kiffin-it’s My belief that has it not been USC, he may still be here to this day. I believe he regrets leaving here and would come back tomorrow. So the admin can’t be blamed on that.
Dooley- impatience. I believe leaving Kippy Brown in as an interim for that year would’ve saved us the last 10+ years of heartache. We would’ve had more time to thoroughly vet a coach and made a great hire. But the lack of patience cost us.
Butch- we almost got it right. He fits the modern day coach description except for several personal problems that we couldn’t have predicted. Allowing the demise of the S&C program is absurd and unheard of. That removed the element of accountability and discipline required to be elite. His unwillingness to take his hands off and allow his coaches to coach did him in. (We’re seeing the same thing with Pruitt.)
Pruitt- he was the tallest midget. With the coaching search debacle, we felt lucky to have him. Everything we were sold about him sounded great and made sense. But at the end of the day, he’s never been a HC and it’s showing big time. He looks and sounds in over his head. Plus, he couldn’t be more of a Bama homer. That’s never sat well with me. At no time should a program like TN hire a coordinator to be a first time HC. Lesson hopefully learned.
All of that being said, if we will apply what we’ve learned from these hires, we should have a good blueprint of what will work and what won’t.
But we’re Tennessee. So...
Good, dead freaking weight this season.
That’s not really it. It’s the equivalent of Georgia tech running the option for years now they are trying to play traditional offense. Switching to or from complete air raid is different. WRs and OLman needed are totally different. That's because Leach is so scheme dependent. He doesn't adapt his offense to his personnel; he forces the scheme onto his personnel, and it's 3+ years before he gets a team made up solely of "his guys."
I've always thought it was kind of ironic that he has this reputation of a "think outside the box" coach, but that's just because he runs a unique scheme. He doesn't think outside his own box at all.
That's exactly what I just said. Leach doesn't really have the personnel yet to run the Air Raid, but he's doing it anyway. That's how he rolls. That’s not really it. WRs and OLman needed are totally different.
Yet they are still competing with 40 scholarship players while we are just happy to score a garbage TD against the worst Florida defense in a decade.
This reads way harsh I just realized. I love Brent, but whatever has been going on with him this season he probably should have opted out sooner to get resolved. If he returns healthy next season I expect he'll have a great season.
Still been tough to watch his struggles this year.
The fact that he couldn’t incorporate the SEC’s leading returning rusher into his scheme screamed volumes. That's because Leach is so scheme dependent.
