Well, what I'm trying to articulate is the coach's record once they arrive on campus should not be the only thing considered when talking about grading the hiring process.

Tom Herman is a perfect example of this to me. Texas hired the top candidate on the market, and went toe-to-toe with LSU to get him. They whooped LSU's ass.

Now, the results haven't been good enough and he's going to be fired. But when grading the hire, I think you still have to say the process was sound.
So if Herman is a decent hire & he’s not my top choice but a very decent hire in my opinion, would it not be cheaper to hire him due to Texas having to pay his buyout. Would it be possible to hire him on the cheap to offset the cost with Pruitt’s buyout ?

It's amazing how quickly the board went from Bailey to Shrout. I'm still firmly in the Bailey camp. He was a couple overshoots on deep throws from a 3-4TD day and we're in the ballgame. Was excellent on the intermediate passes and reads. Just has to recognize pressure and make the proper protection calls a little better.
It's crazy. Up until the 4th quarter Saturday, I had Shrout on par with JG, (he hadn't done anything in the limited game time reps I had saw). I don't think he would have looked near as good if he would've started against the gators. I need to see a complete game out of JT before I crown him as Heisman material.

I still believe HB is the best QB on roster. The play calling, freshman center, and the RBs not picking up the blitz did not help him out at all. I wanted to see a complete game out of him Saturday and I didn't get to.

*Both were much better QBs than anything we've had since Mizzou last year.

His voice can get quite annoying. He is a Yankee (Philly) after all. However he loves the Vols so that makes it more bearable
I can't get past his high pitched voice. It doesn't matter what he has to say, that's not a radio voice. I read his blog but that's as far as I go with Tony. There's a reason he has to pay for his own show.

Pruitt was a fine hire at the time as well - just because he's going to get fired does not mean the process didn't work.

If he’s fired after this season it’s 100% a failed process.

If he survives and wins 6-8 games next year and is fired you could say the process worked but in no shape form or fashion can a coach leave a program with a 2-7 or 3-7 record and that be called the “process working”

In my opinion, Dooley is the only one that was a bad hire in hindsight. Kiffin was EXACTLY what this fanbase wanted post-Fulmer, it's too bad a perfect run of events allowed for USC to come open and fall to him. He was going to take that job no matter where he was or how much his buyout was. I don't blame Hamilton for it at all.

But pivoting to Dooley instead of giving Cutcliffe the program was the killer. That one move explains exactly why we are where we are. Hamilton has said recently that a number of big name coaches were not interested in the job because they were convinced Kiffin was dirty and we were going to be left with sanctions in his wake. I believe him when he says that - I believe it was Muschamp and Wittingham who turned us down. But you allow the mess to force you to hire a .500 coach from Louisiana Tech just because his dad was a good coach 25 years prior. Hamilton did that because he didn't want Fulmer back around the complex and he knew he couldn't keep him away if Cutcliffe was the HC.

Butch was a fine hire - he was a proven winner at Cincinnatti and brought the kind of recruiting cheese this program needed at the time. He's a less intelligent Bruce Pearl. It was very close to succeeding.

Pruitt was a fine hire at the time as well - just because he's going to get fired does not mean the process didn't work.
Process did work, after we broke it.

Please recall we screwed the pooch, on a National scale! NO ONE wanted this job. We got turned down by the head coach of NC State! NO ONE.

Fulmer has the AD, President, Chancellor, and boosters. What else the hell do you all want? y'all cant have it every which way, make up your mind. Support this program, or dont.

He will make the right call.

Bailey did fine and his mistakes were purely of the experience category. Everything else he showed he has the talent and ability to progress through his progressions and feel around the pocket.

As for Shrout, I noticed not just him but everyone else played with an extra gear when he was in. It basically looked like what we heard in offseason that something had clicked but Pruitt dumbass yanked him after one mistake vs KY. When you never know what could have been if the version of shrout we saw Saturday is what we could have seen vs Arky and Auburn. I feel bad for Shrout as he has never been given a fair shake. He showed out vs S Carolina then gets pulled really for no reason vs I think UAB. I bet he starts vs Vandy.

Perhaps you are right about Kiffin, but the buyout was so low that Kiffin didn't even have to think twice. He got the offer was USC and was gone instantaneously.

I don't even really like going there, which is why I kept that comment short.

To Phil's credit, I think it is partially because he's too much of a nice guy, yes. I think he saw Randy Sanders as something of an apprentice back in the day. He still believes he was done wrong/railroaded by the admin when he was fired, and is really hesitant to do that to Pruitt, who he hand-picked.

However, he also doesn't want to let him go because he is so wedded to Pruitt at this point. Phil was brought in under an incredibly unique circumstance; the AD was fired, he was installed, and immediately had to hire a football coach. He said "the Vols are back" at some banquet last year. He's connected at the hip to Pruitt and probably thinks that letting him go makes him look really bad too.
I don't think Fulmer will let himself get fired over Pruitt. That doesn't make sense. They're not related or even old buddies. I would worry about this scenario if it was Cutcliffe, Tee, or a former player but not Pruutt

Has a higher ceiling than Bailey due to his arm strength. Pair him with Freeze and watch the passing yardage #s explode.

Yeah, I disagree with this. People are suddenly in on the "Shrout train" cause he had a solid showing in soft coverage when we were down 3 scores.

He's a 3rd year guy too. I think Shrout could be great, definitely has arm talent and he's got good size. I'm not saying he's not good but I don't think he's got the higher ceiling to Bailey. I just keep thinking of how in both early games Arkansas & Auburn they throw Bailey in at the worst of times and he's been smart with the ball. Even in his first start with Florida he looked good, seemed like Chaney was being ultra conservative with the playcalling though compared to when Shrout came in. Part of that I'm sure is that JT has a stronger arm, but it could also just be JT has more time in the offense and they didn't trust Bailey as much.
