The GSU loss was not all on JG. The coaching staff threw up on their shoes. They ran guys in and out of there a play or two at a time. IIRC there were 66 or 67 players get snaps in that game. Nobody had a chance to develop any chemistry at all.
We didn’t with JG.
You can just spout ultimatums all day, but at least dive deeper and look at the numbers. I said it should be a win for a program like UT. But the turnovers and lack of plays at QB were huge.
If Tee Martin isn’t getting it done as a WR’s coach? Simply let him go. Otherwise it’s a demotion to give him QBs which he coached one season in college...12 years ago.
I think this is the path Fulmer envisions..Let’s talk about a possible scenario that could happen. Let’s assume that Pruitt doesn’t get fired this year, and he doesn’t barring a loss to Vandy if that game is played. I think everyone would agree, if we step back and think rationally, that if we had decent QB play, at best we could be 6-1 right now and at worst 5-2. Let me say right off the bat, I’m not an idiot in spite of what Kingston says, I know there are plenty of other issues, but I still believe that is true that with better QB play our record is much better (I know it’s Pruitt’s fault he kept playing JG).
That being said, JG is gone next year. So is Weinke who couldn’t develop a hot dog if you gave him a wiener and a bun. Chaney likely becomes the QB coach, and he has a track record for developing QB’s.
Pruitt hires Bo Davis for the DL coach, and we have a lot of experience returning there as well as a lot of young talent which allows him to assist Nieds and Felton with developing the LB position. In spite of what we think of him as a HC, the guy knows how to coach defense.
We then have a full offseason with spring and fall camp to develop our players. That 2020 class was loaded and they’ll have their first offseason.
We’ve already established that QB play elevates the team, so in the fall of 2021 either Bailey or a transfer plays really well for us. There’s only 3 unwinnable games, and TN goes 8-4. This shows enough improvement for Pruitt to land that loaded class in 2022. They finish top 10 in the recruiting rankings with Simpson heading up that class.
We then go into 2022 with a Junior HB, a Rfr Salter, freshman HB, that loaded 20’ class as juniors more hopeful than we are now. Maybe by then Pruitt has learned and is doing a better job. HB then hands the reins to Salter or Simpson who elevates the program even more
I’m not saying this happens, I’m not saying that I believe that it happens, but this is a possible scenario.
Fair enough. The team treated GA State like it was a scrimmage. The coaches simply didn’t have the team ready to play and it wasn’t even a trap game. It was the first game of the year, the team should have been fired up to play. The Oline should have blown them off the ball and ran at will. Gs State probably didn’t have one player that would play at UT. The defense was confused and had several blown coverages. I could not bring myself to rewatch this game, so this is just off of memory. I was thinking it would just be an isolated incident that the staff would learn from and then this season happened.
And Peyton Manning could never lose to Memphis and FCS AppState could never beat Michigan. And ULMonroe could never beat Saban’s Bama team. Upsets happenI mean let’s not forget the defense literally couldn’t line up correctly the entire game. That was coaching malpractice if we are being completely honest. No coach worth a damn would ever, ever lose that game.
Barry Switzer once got takeout from Gus' and drove over to the old pay phone on Neyland drive. Placed a collect call to his then girlfriend, who later became his baby momma, and told her he was going to coach in the SEC some day. I think he would come here.I wonder if Jimmy Johnson has any desire left to coach? Or maybe Tony Dungy....
Was he pushed out at OU cuz of Riley? I remember something being said about it.I do wonder if Bob Stoops is interested in coming back to coaching college. If serious, you could probably get him for 5 mil a yr. Stoops would bring instant name recognition and let everyone know UT is serious about winning.
