Im in the same boat as you. I see them taking a step back for the next year or two.I actually like our chances next year to have a good year with competent coaching. There’s some talent over there, just got to get them in a position to be successful.
We’re going to get blown out tomorrow, but my hot take of the season is Florida is pure smoke and mirrors. They have the best player in the country (Pitts) and Trask has been great, so credit where credit is due. However when they’re gone I think Florida will take a step back. I believe you’ll see the offense from Mississippi St comes back where they run 65% of the time.
Let’s talk about a possible scenario that could happen. Let’s assume that Pruitt doesn’t get fired this year, and he doesn’t barring a loss to Vandy if that game is played. I think everyone would agree, if we step back and think rationally, that if we had decent QB play, at best we could be 6-1 right now and at worst 5-2. Let me say right off the bat, I’m not an idiot in spite of what Kingston says, I know there are plenty of other issues, but I still believe that is true that with better QB play our record is much better (I know it’s Pruitt’s fault he kept playing JG).
That being said, JG is gone next year. So is Weinke who couldn’t develop a hot dog if you gave him a wiener and a bun. Chaney likely becomes the QB coach, and he has a track record for developing QB’s.
Pruitt hires Bo Davis for the DL coach, and we have a lot of experience returning there as well as a lot of young talent which allows him to assist Nieds and Felton with developing the LB position. In spite of what we think of him as a HC, the guy knows how to coach defense.
We then have a full offseason with spring and fall camp to develop our players. That 2020 class was loaded and they’ll have their first offseason.
We’ve already established that QB play elevates the team, so in the fall of 2021 either Bailey or a transfer plays really well for us. There’s only 3 unwinnable games, and TN goes 8-4. This shows enough improvement for Pruitt to land that loaded class in 2022. They finish top 10 in the recruiting rankings with Simpson heading up that class.
We then go into 2022 with a Junior HB, a Rfr Salter, freshman HB, that loaded 20’ class as juniors more hopeful than we are now. Maybe by then Pruitt has learned and is doing a better job. HB then hands the reins to Salter or Simpson who elevates the program even more
I’m not saying this happens, I’m not saying that I believe that it happens, but this is a possible scenario.
Trask needs to be on his backside early and often. Had two weeks to prepare some blitzes .So, thinking about tomorrows game. I think the key will be slowing down Pitts, I know easier said then done. However, if we can get Bryce matched up on him he can do a decent job. Imo the best gameplay for tomorrow would be Burrell at Corner and Key at STAR. Move Bryce to safety for Tank. If I was Pruitt/Ansley I would make sure to roll my coverages where Bryce was always on Pitts.
Hard to cover a 6’ 6” dude with what we have. No one has been able to do it so far.So, thinking about tomorrows game. I think the key will be slowing down Pitts, I know easier said then done. None of this will happen and we know it. He is 108 points worse than Dooley through 3 years and about to be a lot worse.Let’s talk about a possible scenario that could happen. Why do people think Herman would succeed here but not Tx? I think he is a good coach but it’s a very similar situation at TX as it is TN in a worse conference. It’s also in a place where he had recruiting connections in that region. He wouldn’t have those connection in SEC country. I personally think TX is being premature with letting him go based on a year like this but I think they also see an issue with AM and LSU and potentially now Arkansas using SEC ties against them so you have to have a game changer in Urban. I would not fire Herman without for sure having Urban. Urban loves retiring from a scandal then finding a weak conference to prey on for quick rebuild. Surprised he doesn’t wait on USC but he really hates Herman for snitching on him.
If HB doesn't start I have no desire to watch what is already a foregone conclusion. Starting JG would equate to Pruitt giving double middle fingers to the entire fanbase at midfield pregame.
I say pick a poison and stick with it. Try to shut down Pitts or just try to shut down a side or maybe for the love of anything cover a freaking slant. Point is they’re going to move the ball like crazy but eliminate something.Correct very difficult. But Bryce is a talented player and our best cover corner. He is our best shot imo.
agreed on the stopping part. iow...We might as well stop the new HC talk for this year cause CP and CF will blame our sad playing on COVID. CP will get another year but if he screws up again next year maybe there will be a better choices for our new HC. Can you imagine being a HC that has to coach when the fans have given up on them.
No it isn't. Context. This team with 3 CAKE ooc games is 6-6 this season. IF we beat Vandy, let's just call it a 6-6 team. In YEAR THREE! .500 next year is going 6-6 in both Y3 and Y4. That's embarrassing. Dooley was fired with much more competitive teams. Can't believe Pruitt would be kept for less. But it would be a four win improvement over this year.
If we’re not OK with 6 wins, which I’m 50/50 on I think, then go ahead and get it over with this year.
They for sure will, but Trask will make some questionable decisions and UF has a tendency to put the ball on the ground. Need to play clean ball tomorrow.I say pick a poison and stick with it. Try to shut down Pitts or just try to shut down a side or maybe for the love of anything cover a freaking slant. Point is they’re going to move the ball like crazy but eliminate something.
