Recruiting Forum Football Talk III

Since Pruitt is associated with elite defenses I want him to mastermind the defense and maybe have rare, vague input on anything else. That’s how I think he succeeds. I don’t really want to train him to be a general manager (like Pittman is thought to be for example) and let someone else run the defense - his managing skills aren’t what we hired him for (I hope).
Tbf Pruitt says he and Ansley can basically read each others' minds when it comes to defense. And his hand is deep in the defensive cookie jar. This is his defense either way and it stinks right now.

Tbh we all need to face reality. We will never win the national championship again. Hell, there's a pretty good chance we won't win the SEC championship game in our lifetime.

But we can and should win 8 games a year with an average coach. We almost ALWAYS have more talented rosters than 8 of our opponents. Why can't we bring in an average coach that can beat less talented teams and lose to more talented teams?

We will lose to Georgia, Alabama, and Florida every year. Fine. But not averaging winning 8 games is pathetic and embarrassing with the recruiting classes we bring in.
So you want Butch back?

You know I’m going to take this out of context and start screaming hire Urban from here on out right?[/QUOTEra.

Truth be told, Meyer and Bob Stoops should be where everyone's expectation should be if we're clamoring for an example of buy in from the UT administration. Freeze should actually be in a second tier if we're being 100% honest.

Meyer is probably the only name that would immediately move the needle. And he and Fulmer talk, so if Meyer had interest, it would've been made known.
This goes along the line of thinking I've been having today. Lack of a truly attractive candidate plays a part in keeping Pruitt. Everyone screams "Hugh Freeze" but that's not happening for a number of reasons. There's not another candidate, IMO, that the powers-that-be feels would take this job and be a sure fire game changer and turn things around. So why spend the money? Of course the other side of the coin is that if Pruitt fails next year, they'll be forced into a change, and the market to find a new coach will probably be tougher as a lot more teams will look to make a move next year, assuming we have a season without COVID restrictions.

Never is such a long time, young padawan. The only constant is change.

It didn't make the rounds here but Austin Price and Chris Lowe were talking about Harrison Bailey and Jeremy Pruitt's job status on The Nation either last week or the week before. They were both kind of chuckling and saying "they know they have to beat Vanderbilt to have a chance at survival. Everything will be geared towards that."

Also, there are plenty of programs who will have the opportunity to hire Hugh Freeze because no one is going to touch him.

What if the Vandy game doesn't even get played? Does that count as a win?

When would y'all say that Tennessee stopped being an elite program? 2001? I know that 2001 team is romanticized and potentially overrated in some regard, but it was obscenely talented and finished #4. I still look at it as a continuation of the elite period that began in 1995. I know that we won the East again in 2004 and 2007, but we were underdogs both times and pretty clearly the weaker team on paper. I didn't expect to win either of those games.

It's absolutely unfathomable to me that a program with our resources hasn't had a top 10 finish in nearly 20 years. It's almost like in order to pull that off, you'd have to do it intentionally. It seems like we at least should have been able to fall over ourselves into a top 10 finish once.

Meyer and Phil talk? As in Urban? That would be interesting.

Fulmer talks to a lot of people. And UT regularly talks with agents. Agents are always talking up their clients and trying to feel out where future openings might be, and athletic departments are continually doing temperature checks to see who might be looking to make a move at some point. Just part of doing business.

I'm sure Fulmer & company are also talking to the SEC, seeing what the feel is on Freeze. Because why wouldn't you? Hugh is making it very obvious he wants the UT gig and even if not this season the job could be open next, the biggest hurdle would be the SEC in that hire imo. I'm sure some higher ups aren't fond of it, but I think most would settle for it if it meant winning.

No doubt, that '95 team was special. 11-1 and the only loss was to Florida....Peyton "choked" that game away, we hung 37 on 'em and had a 16 point lead in the 2nd quarter. Lost 62-37 :|

That team is still my favorite Tennessee team. I still remember being a kid and just being elated when Tennessee was up on Florida, and then being completely demoralized when the rain hit and everything just went off the rails.

I wouldn't have said this 10 or even 3 years ago, but I'm at the point where I'm in favor of making a hire that would bring a period of winning even if there was a big hangover afterwards (i.e., NCAA trouble/probation). It's time to totally dispense with any "Well, they might be good" hires.

It'd be fun, people would still remember who won the games even if they had to be vacated, and the hangover would be no different than the last 10+ years. We'd be used to it.

I dont think anyone could have played with that Miami team. Might have been the greatest collection of talent on a college team at one time.

I do not disagree. I mean that team had a chance at not getting embarrassed. Just about everyone else aside from UF and UT was likely getting run out of the stadium like Nebraska.
