So is it your belief that only the truly elite players are doing everything they can to succeed? Bc you named 3 HOF’rs.
Most likely, yes.

These guys live in a world that normal people like us can't comprehend. It takes a truly special person to make the kind of money that these guys make and still maintain a certain level of competitiveness. I imagine the urge to take your foot off the pedal after getting paid is enormous.

I think they become hugely successful precisely because they don't have that "take your foot off the gas" mindset. It's always go go go for them. CEO/founder of my former company in Nashville sold the business, plus another side business, plus a bunch of downtown property and made off with millions. Then he dove headfirst into building up another company, even though he's rich enough to just vacation every day for the rest of his life.

This is just not how competitors think.

While I agree the money thing is difficult bc normal people have never been in that situation, this notion that only the elite are doubt what it takes to be elite is ridiculous.

Some guys are limited by physical capabilities. Some are limited by mental capabilities. But guys don’t work their whole life to get to the league, get one contract and call it quits. It’s more likely that they use some of that money to invest in their careers, whether it be with chefs, trainers, physical therapists, sports psychologist, putting a gym in their house, etc.

You can be cut at any time in the NFL. And there are thousands of dudes behind you just begging for a chance.

You’re getting too hung up on the money.

Man, Derek Mason would be a solid hire for any position on defense.

Still not sure where I am on the fire or keep train. Part of me really wants to just shelve this season and see what year 4 can hold with us finally moving on from JG, but part of me saw the on field product this season and is tired of all the staff turnover wondering if JP can pull the wagon or not.

That's a more rare breed. They definitely exist, but I don't think they are very common. Those types people never have been working primarily for money, especially now, because as you said he's got more money than he knows what to do with but still works. Those guys like the action, they like playing the game, and want to stay at the pinball machine until they run out of turns because they want to see how high of a score they can achieve.

I think the default or average human mindset is to achieve some measure of success, which is different for different people, then take the foot off the gas.

I'd like to open this up to folks who are older than me: what was it that made Fulmer successful here as head coach? I was four years old in 1998, my first real memories are the 2001 season, so I've really only seen this program come down.

Is it as simple as David Cutcliffe was just that good? I think that doesn't give Fulmer his due.

Is what he did here replicable in 2020?

Am I? Even Tom Brady, who along with his wife have enough money to make their great-great-great-great-great grandchildren wealthy, doesn't work for free.

People are funny about money - they always want to minimize or outright ignore the role it plays in everything. I get that it is taboo, and I definitely think it is uncouth to walk around talking about how much money you make or how much money you spent on something, but it does make the world go round.

Talent plus Bama and Georgia not being as good.

@Atlanta VOL @LA Vol can we really expect any good assistant coach hires when Pruitt is already going to be on such thin ice next year? Worried about this offense next year even with JG not at QB.

Sure. But elite coaches have top agents, who demand significant contract concessions. Fans get outraged over the terms UT is forced to give when right now, agents have the leverage.

I'm only 4 years older but I think it's harder to replicate because he could recruit so well and there weren't the same scholly restrictions.

Excuses are instruments of futility. They build monuments of insignificance. Those who concentrate on utilizing them are seldom proficient at anything else.

We had to memorize that quote from a company commander I had once. I think it is very relevant now.

“A smooth sea never made a skillful sailor.”

That one’s easier to remember.

Fulmer was an elite recruiter and an excellent head coach/program CEO
SEC wasn't as good or deep as it is now
Vols were a national brand
Great coordinators who all worked well together and stuck around for a long time
The brand of football we played still worked when we could out-talent the competition, except against the Gators

By "administration" he means Randy Boyd.

$20M is NOTHING for that guy. I worked with him briefly in a previous job and he's able to regularly get access to $100M+ for different business ventures and moves. He knows everyone and can sell ice to eskimos.
I need just you know 1% of that 100M..... can he make that happen? It’d be a great Christmas gift.
