Our next hire should be

Danny White - UCF

That's the most important hire we can make, IMO.

For those that don't know, he's the UCF Athletic Director.

I don't put much stock in what media types think, but put great stock in the opinions of other coaches. The general consensus from what is said and what little is quoted is that 1) He is a good Defensive mind and his ceiling is being a DC 2) He is hard headed and difficult to work with, which you can get away with somewhat as a coordinator but it hurts you and causes you to micromanage as a HC. It also makes you dig in and resist when your decisions are questions (see Guarantano, J.). Not a great endorsement from inside the business.

TN’s ceiling is national champions. Give us 9-11 wins a year with hope going into every season we could win it all if everything goes right. That’s what TN should always be

That would be Tennessee's ceiling if UGA, UF, Bama weren't all miles ahead of us. But the reality is, 15 years of irrelevance takes a toll on your program.

Let's dig that hole a little deeper so we can get out easier. Whatever. None of the players going or coming is going to matter with the leadership and coaching that is there.

Losing does not beget success. It is not a necessary part of the process to winning. Have we not learned that in over a dozen years yet? In fact, other than for an occasional wake-up call purpose, it does the opposite because it become the definition of a team's culture. Then the on-field lack of discipline shows up and then the off-field lack of discipline shows up and then the nasty local media shows up and then recruiting gets worse and the cycle continues on and on. Then UT responds with Coach McGoogle and the hype begins only to repeat the cycle. They cannot and should not allow this to continue one day past Saturday.

Cubbie fans - did you really like being known as the "lovable losers" all those years? Some may, most didn't. So when ownership finally had their fill of it they went out hired the very best in the business at the time - Theo Epstein - away from the Red Sox, who had recently won their first WS in forever with Theo at the helm as well. Theo did what Theo does. They hired the best, gave him control and money, he orchestrated the rest. They got their new tradition of winning and a WS ring. They like it now and don't want to go back to being lovable losers again. They learned you make much more money and are happier when you win consistently.

That's how it is done when your program has become mediocre to bottom feeder - like the Vols have been for some time. Cumulatively, the Vols are like 3 games under .500 since Fulmer's last, terminated season. Up and down, but under the mediocre (Mendoza for baseball fans) line.

Preaching to the choir for some of you, but the hole digging has got to stop first. Then they need call in elite professionals to get out of the hole next. That will cost money and pride. We are not the Tennessee of old anymore. Many of the players were not even alive when we were on top. They were too young to know when we still did some good things after the mountain top.

If Texas hires Urban - we all know where they are headed. The same exists with the SEC top programs - they hired the best proven HC's available. If we want in we have to change from top down. Otherwise we are just pizzin' into the wind and stay the unlovable losers and legions of the miserable.

This is such a smart post and one I hope I remember when the next coach is hired, whichever one it is. I am as guilty of this as anyone - but the idea that a coach has to lose early in his tenure to "wipe the slate clean" and "build his culture" is stupid spin from fans who want to believe something their eyes are showing them is the opposite.

Good coaches, and especially the truly elite ones, can build on what they've been given. It does not have to be that you tear it down to build back in your image.

Take Urban Meyer for example. These are his first seasons at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State: 8-3, 10-2, 9-3, and 12-0.

I'm not saying we are going to hire a Meyer type coach, or even that we have to to be successful. But the more I look at it and think back, the more I think it is immediately obvious which coaches are good and which aren't: and those are the coaches who can take rosters that may be ill-equipped for what they want to do, and they can still build on what they've been given.

1. Freeze
2. Campbell
3. Herman
4. Napier
5. Chadwell

Get any of these guys and we will be set up for 8-9 wins per year with the chance of a big year every 3-4 years. Get rid of Pruitt now so we can salvage the instate '22 class and all of these guys would be able to do it.

Put Marrone and Sarkisian in there ahead of Napier and bump Chadwell, and I’m right there with you.

A lot of things this staff is doing is baffling. I would
Much rather take a talented freshmen than gamble on a transfer. Only transfer I would take is a QB such as Milton if he were to leave UCF.
And why would Milton come here? Why not Nebraska and play for Frost. Frost has already told him he can join the staff as a coach when he is done playing football. I dont see what they are going to pitch to transfers.

The question to me about Herman is...does he learn from his mistakes or double down? And is his decent but not great record at Texas a reflection of mistakes or just his ceiling as a coach?

I think he may be just as stubborn as Pruitt, but he's also more capable of running a successful program.

Ok cool, Go vols!

Herman has a lot of close losses at Texas. 5 double digit losses in 4 years, the most being by 17 points.

Will this game even happen for us? And it appears this chick kicker’s halftime speech caused some rift in the football team.

Speak for yourself.there’s a reason why the parents and players are separated for the night when they visit campus.do you honestly think the parents get invited to the log cabin👀😅🥴

I said nothing about visiting campus. I stated that some parents aren't going to want their kids to play for someone who made a huge mistake. And as one of the leaders of the university, Freeze is going to have a hard time sitting on the recruits coach and have a mom ask him about it.
