Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2025-26

Arkansas’ defense was suspect to begin with. That being said, Maryland was Arkansas’ 4th opponent in 5 days with Thanksgiving in the middle. It was Maryland’s 3rd game in three days as well so it was a little ugly both ways at times. Maryland defended Arkansas well in the first half and built a huge lead. Maryland let off the gas defensively in the second half or it would have been an even bigger deficit.

Arkansas had trouble getting out to shooters and stopping the ball all night. Miller, Reese and Owusu ran layup drill in transition all night and nobody ever stopped them. They crushed Arkansas on the glass as well. Bibby and Benzan got a ton of looks they normally wouldn’t because Arkansas was two steps slow. Most of Benzan’s 8 3s were wide open, even late in the game after she already hit 6.

Arkansas can’t play defense that poorly and expect to finish in the top half of the SEC though. Teams like SC, Kentucky, UT and others will bother them defensively with their length like Maryland did. If Maryland had applied the same defensive pressure in both halves Arkansas would have scored in the high 70s. Freese obviously lit a fire under her team after that loss to Mo State. Arkansas is going to get crushed on the boards all year in the SEC.

Arkansas' gameplan is to play at a super fast pace, create scoring opportunities from turnovers, get to the line and take/make a ton of threes. When they do this, they will win most of the their games. They were successful in 3 out of the 4. If they shot better from deep, they could have win this game.

They couldn't rebound to save their lives last year either, but were still one of the better SEC teams. I think they will do fine in the SEC. They essentially return the same team from last year, with Slocum being an upgrade from Tolefree. I doubt Arkansas will have many games where Dungee and Ramirez are both cold from deep like they were yesterday.

there's a lot of advantage to having at least one or two creampuffs early,,,they allow you to look at your entire roster for more than just garbage minutes...e.g..would we know how much potential Marta has if we started out playing top ten teams?? or would we have been able to look at Destiny for extended minutes....

Nope.
We would be forced to field the team based on knowledge we had, not knowledge we gained.

Yes we need to schedule top teams,,but not on games 1 or 2,,,at least that is my philosophy.

Unless of course, if we came back the following year with a top ten team and no one leaving it,,,then heck yeah, give me top ten teams from day one.

but not when rebuilding and looking at new potentials.
Games 3-on, absolutely...but there is a distinct advantage to being able to look at your whole roster in the early season
I disagree. These games do nothing. They scrimmage each other every day in practice so KH already knows about her roster. Let’s face it we schedule these games to get easy wins to look good to get in the tourney. No other reason.

Whats going on at UNC 6-3 So Malu Tshitenge , Yes they have played 3 cupcakes so far. Tshitenge started all 3 games and her mins in each game have gone down. I watched the replay of yesterday game against High Point, And at one point in the game High Point was giving UNC a beatdown. Tshitenge only played 4 mins in the game i was very surprise. But what i do know is that coach Banghart is very high on 2020 and 2021 recruiting class. Alyssa Ustby 6-1 fr and Anya Poole 6-2 fr have been playing more mins now.

Grading these schedules and not taking account that a a lot of these team had to change their schedules because of Covid is kind of disingenuous.

Coach Banghart said in the post game interview yesterday that Malu's minutes were limited against High Point was because they had to go small in order to match up with High Point.

You didn’t count them?

Point is while the zags could have shot better FTs the gamecocks had problems finishing at the rim as well as being around 50% from the line. Hopefully this will improve otherwise we'll see some loses this season. Lots for Dawn to work on. Henderson played great and should be MVP of the tournament. Hopefully she'll evolve into the team leader which we currently don't have.

Cooke should have had about 5 more assists and 5 fewer shots against SD and Gonzaga. If she gets that sorted out she’ll be one of the best players in the country. 5-16 against SD and 6-17 against Gonzaga isn’t going to cut it. She has too many talented players around her to shoot that many shots at that low a percentage. The running floater she shoots is really something she should take out of her in game repertoire.

Henderson played great last season and has carried that forward. She was the most consistent player by far for SC over the weekend IMO.

Boston needs to step up. SD and Gonzaga both showed that if you play her physical you can keep her in check. She was in foul trouble both games as well. SC can ill afford for her to be in foul trouble in SEC play. Amihere has taken a big step forward now that she’s healthy but she doesn’t take up nearly as much room in the paint as Boston.

She is playing out of position imo! In High school she played the 5, at UNC she is playing the 4! Since the 5 is Bailey's spot, I don't see her seeing much time there until Bailey leaves this year. Probably would've been better playing someone else at the 4 and bringing her in to back up Bailey but Bailey rarely leaves the floor

I agree with you probably would've been better playing someone else at the 4. I think 6-4 fr Alexandra Zelaya takes over Bailey spot. Alexandra Zelaya and Tshitenge have played about same amount of minutes so far. I could be wrong but it looks like coach Banghart will be playing fr Poole at the 4 more.

Depaul 128 pts in the 4th 1:06 Lady vols i`m sure would not want to play this team

Why not remember the last coach to hang a L on that high powered offense during the tourney was our very own Kellie Harper 😂

Yes i know they have different teams now but it would be interesting to see if she could game plan against him again with the talent she has here...

That is an impressive score to put up though! i thought MD was gonna score that much yesterday but took the foot off the pedal they had 98 points through 3 quarters
