Butch Jones

Even though Butch was the worst game manager in recent memory, I believe that he worked very hard and put his heart into improving Vol Football. I am surprised that he hasn"t taken another job in a power 5 conference. The man could recruit - look at all the NFL guys he hooked. Thoughts ? Why is he radioactive?
Read these books and get back to me:
“Decade of Dysfunction” by Mark Nagy
“Empowered” by Celina Summers and Tom Mattingly.

Butch abused his players and covered it up. We are lucky the university wasn’t sued.

He recruited almost zero SEC quality linemen, plenty of MAC lineman.

Why should he take a head coach job right now. Is Tennessee still paying him?
His buy out will be paid up next year. If we hang on the Pruitt, we can hire Butch again and see what he has learned from Saban. Then we can keep him another 3 years or so, and if he fails again, we can buy him out again so he can learn more from Saban. We have to look out for all our former coaches. This firing and buying out coaches has to stop sometime and we can not afford to keep committing "Harry Carrie" every 3-4 years. At least wait until COVID is in the past and we have enough in surplus to carry us through the next 2-3 years when we can get our revenues back to where we can make some intelligent choices. Firing another coach and staff at this time is not a wise decision.

Dooley/Pruitt combined have won 30 of 68 games while Butch won 34 of 61.

I hated the hire and still think he was a bad fit but he was better than Pruitt or Dooley.

I can't really put my finger on why Butch unraveled because it was a combination of so many things... if he could have done better at replacing Dobbs, hadn't lied like a politician, maybe treated his assistants better/trusted them more and had been more consistent with S&C he'd still be here.

One former player said that in 2015, when we lost all those games in the second half, instead of getting more aggressive with play calling, he blamed the S&C program and made a switch. He said that was the beginning of the end for Butch.

If he would take some lessons from his failures and not be so stubborn he'd be a fine coach for someone, but he's not a fit for the SEC

I’m still horrified that people who actually post here thought that Tennessee always won at least 5 games every year for 100 years. That’s pretty ignorant, folks.

If you’re that ignorant, then reading a book seems like a solid recommendation.

Butch wasn’t the answer at the end of his tenure and isn’t the answer now. Pruitt isn’t the answer, either.

This should be obvious to any sane Vol fan. Nothing else needs to be said.

Time to move forward.
Not saying I wanted butch back, I was saying hypothetically we'd be in a better spot, not great but better than what I'm seeing. Not really sure on the lecture, some people cant joke around i guess. You move forward "sane" fan

CBJ is a POS. Intentionally milking UT and he is so bad that he is a former HC at an SEC school and still can’t get an official position on the field today with Saban out. They promoted an offensive analyst instead.

He is an awful coach with little to no pride.

He lost a record 8 SEC games his last season. He was finished.

However, his trajectory was good through Year 3. Underachieved in Year 4, but still acceptable. The wheels came off in that last year and, even worse, he looked like he quit.

I haven't read this entire thread but the trumpet blower is one of the worst coaches in history. He was just a sleazy used car salesman that was "just" smart enough to realize that he couldn't get the job done and knew when to flee a job to cover up his inadequacies. He literally followed Brian Kelly around and took teams that Kelly built up and just kind of tried to keep things from coming off of the rails. And he wasn't even good at that. He recruited some kids with all of his BS promises that he couldn't or wouldn't keep and in a couple of years at UT all of the stories started coming out.

It should tell you something that no other school has offered him a D1 head coaching position. He doesn't even get interviews. He is a despicable human being along with being a horrible little man with a Napoleon complex. There's plenty of stories about him and all of his nonsense. I don't hate poor Coach Gomer I just feel sorry for him. He's not cut out to be a head coach at all. And he needs to be gone tomorrow - but at least he doesn't seem to be a horrible person to boot.

The trumpet blower should never have sniffed the job here to begin with. He's exactly where he needs to be right now - licking the bottom of Nick Saban's loafers clean and getting him coffee when he asks for it.

He’s still milking our money. That’s why.

Yes. Except he didn’t lose 8. He lost six. But the rest of your point is spot on.

...I can't really put my finger on why Butch unraveled because it was a combination of so many things...

I will always believe it was the pressure going into 2016. He was building something. 5 wins to 7 to 9. And in 15 we went toe to toe with programs that were more talented than us. Yes, they lost games in 15 in ways we shouldn't have. Those happen. But we were clearly improving.

But in 16 we came out of the gate flat. Just never looked right. We finally got that W over Florida, but that team underachieved. Butch was red faced all year. Players weren't happy. I think the pressure honest to God broke him. I think that's why he's fine getting coffee for Saban on our dime.

First 4 win season in our program’s history was under his watch. Up until then, Tennessee and Ohio St were the only programs who had never won fewer than 5 games. Even Dooley managed to keep the streak alive

Pruitt is on schedule to beat that loss record

Butch Jones is the biggest disgrace. I think the little stunt he's pulled will prevent him from ever getting another Power 5 head coaching job.

Yes. He “was” the coach when Tennessee had their worst season in school history that included going winless in SEC play.

After this season that may or may not even be completed, Butch will still be the coach that had the worst season in school history.
