Should we trust Fulmer to make another hire?

As a coach he was great and is an iconic figure in college football. But as an AD he sucks. Whatever he does as an AD will have no impact on how well of a coach he was and his legacy on the Hill. We need Fulmer to retire and the school actually hire a proven AD.
He was neither great nor is he an iconic figure in college football. He was a great OL coach and a good HC

I wish I could get in a poker game with all the Volunteer ADs of the last twenty years. I’ve never seen someone so overcommitted to their hand. Fulmer was holding a 2 and 9 off suit and went all in with Pruitt on the extension.

Absolutely need to keep Phil. Were it not for him we'd have Schiano or, God forbid, Mike Leach as our coach.

Well many of us on here had rather have Leach. I for one rather have Leach, just watch what he does at ms. st. they gave Fla all they could handle and this is just his first year, and I think with a freshman qb, not sure about that. I want to win. I am in favor of Freeze now, while we still have what I think is a pretty good roster. I say hire him after our next game. Look we are not just losing, we are losing by a great margin with a good roster minus the starting qb. And as far as Fulmer hiring a replacement, I say a panel of knowledgeable football people make a list of coaches to hire, and it is decided by this panel who to hire and the contract is negociated by someone other than Fulmer. Fulmer is a good face for UT.

Your last line is what got us in trouble anyways. Haslams wanted Pruitt and that is our problem. We weren't at a place talent wise when we hired him to hire a big name as it was between Mike Leech, Pruitt, and Schiano and none of those guys have proved anything this year. Yes Leech has put up points but he can't stop others from doing so (remember Dooley yrs). Schiano- well we have more wins than he does. So our choice right now is to have Pruitt and hopefully he can stock the cupboard for the next coach to come in and win.

I say transfer Pruitt to dc and hire Freeze, with the understanding he can fire Pruitt for cause in event of insubordination, which will probably happen and then no buyout pay. Or in the event Pruitt declines dc he would get no buyout because he turned the job down. There may be some buy out like this but a lot less of a buy out. The way I understand it. it would be the difference in the dc pay and the buy out price.

Pruitt wouldn't take that and from what I remember on Pruitts contract is that we are on the hook for the total buyout no matter if he gets a gig somewhere else even if it is for more money. Fulmer let the lawyers do a number on that one.

The rest of the University's sports are doing good. He made a good hire on the women's basketball
team. She is also learning to be a HC. If you think Fulmer is trying to destroy the football program you don't know Fulmer. He bleeds Orange. Where will you find an AD that knows more about football? We haven't had one in my lifetime and I am old. This place is in panic mode. You guy's need to pump the breaks and stop with all the panic crap.

LOL at Fulmer "bleeds orange". The man bleeds green from all the money he's gotten out of the university.

At this point, who has proven that they can be trusted to hire a competent football coach?

The problem with Phil is he will only hire Boy Scouts. Sorry, but in modern college football you gotta hire a proven winner like Freeze with some baggage. Never thought I’d say that until now, but after 13 years I’m so sick of losing.

I don’t blame Fulmer for Pruitt. Circumstances were crazy and Pruitt’s resume looked good for an assistant ready to move up. While I was never overly excited for Pruitt I thought he put together a good staff and had hopes he would grow into the role quickly. He clearly wasn’t ready though.

Fulmer gets one more shot at a proper coaching search before I’m ready to through him under the bus too.

You're right but you're also wrong. The problem isnt that Phil will only hire Boy Scouts. The problem is that he has an antiquated idea of what winning football resembles. Even defensive geniuses like Saban have come to embrace this is an offense driven game now. Fulmer is still of the mindset of pound the ball, play defense instead of having a high powered, quick strike offense.

Completely disagree about 'looked good for an assistant ready to move up.' I never knew him to be on the radar of any team at the time and he's proven why we were the only idiots dumb enough to hire him.
