Should we trust Fulmer to make another hire?

I know some despise Fulmer on here but I personally love the man for what he has done as a coach for this program. That said he’s never been particularly good at hiring assistants. What would lead us to believe he would be good at hiring a head coach? He’s also in over his head it appears in negotiating a contract.

I really think fans just like the idea of a choice other than a puppet to Haslam. But why are we limited to that or Fulmer? As much as I would love to fire Pruitt and get another coach at this point, I really believe we need to get our house in order from the top.
As a coach he was great and is an iconic figure in college football. But as an AD he sucks. Whatever he does as an AD will have no impact on how well of a coach he was and his legacy on the Hill. We need Fulmer to retire and the school actually hire a proven AD.

Truthfully he wasn't that great. With the talent he was able to recruit Fulmer should have had at least 1 more and maybe 2 more NCs. Other than getting extremely lucky 3 times in 1998 he always managed to piss away 1-2 games a year that kept us from the promised land.

His 9-3 season in 1999 may he his worst coaching performance ever, though 1996 was very bad too. 1999 was absolutely stacked to the rafters with experienced talent and depth. Losing Cutcliffe was too much and Phil did what he did without Cutcliffe, struggled.

I am glad Volnation does not do my end of year review, you guys are ruthless.

Pruitt is having "growing pains" he has never been a head coach before. Think about this, Do you believe that Saban would have hired him if he was not a good coach? Give some thought before you answer,.....the answer is "No", Saban knew he would be a good D-Cord when he hired him. Pruitt proved that he can coach a defense. Pruitt has yet to prove he can hire good assistants and let them do their jobs.

I look at KY. They hired Stoops who had coaching experience but they have given him time (7 years) and now KY is no longer just a basketball school. I believe we have to give Pruitt more time. He does not even have his third class on campus yet and you all want him gone. Now don't cuss me just yet, I do not believe that Pruitt has done a good job but I do believe he needs the 2021 season before we can truly say he is a dud.

With the extension he was given (don't get me started on extensions, I hate them) he is here for the rest of the Covid season and 2021 and unless the team totally melts down in 2021 he is probably here for 2022 season as well. That would give him 4 full classes that are "His" recruits. Fulmer has proven that he is loyal to "His" guys, that is what got Fulmer fired from coaching.

I know it seems that way but I think it's just his strategy. Exhibit a "country lawyer" persona then use it against you later. No way he isn't brilliant else he wouldn't be in the position he is in. He's a carbon copy of Phil in his best years.
😂 I’m sorry but there is no way Pruitt is brilliant.

Your last line is what got us in trouble anyways. Haslams wanted Pruitt and that is our problem. We weren't at a place talent wise when we hired him to hire a big name as it was between Mike Leech, Pruitt, and Schiano and none of those guys have proved anything this year. Yes Leech has put up points but he can't stop others from doing so (remember Dooley yrs). Schiano- well we have more wins than he does. So our choice right now is to have Pruitt and hopefully he can stock the cupboard for the next coach to come in and win.
I can guarantee you Haslam in no way wanted Pruitt. Believe what you like but our first hire was Mullen and our back up was Schiano. Those were the only two Haslam had given the stamp of approval to. Leach was off book attempt by Currie to save himself.

I doubt you have made an 800,000 $ hiring gaffe ( Brumbaugh ) or are on track to produce one of the worst seasons in 129 seasons either in Year 3 so you would probably get some slack in your evaluation.

Pruitt has been proven to be a good DB coach and DC.

At some point he needs to be judged on what he is doing and not what he has done however. He likes to tell everyone he knows what a championship team looks like but it is becoming painfully clear he doesn't know how to build a championship team.

A: We aren't a school where a head coach should have growing pains. He was a ridiculous hire.

B: Kentucky is 3-5 and just lost by 60 points Saturday. They're a basketball school.

If Fulmer is truly ever given a "blank check" to fire and hire a staff for the football program, I don't have a problem with him making another football hire. But if he is boxed in with finances, what's point of firing Pruitt?

Anyone could make a good hire with a "blank check".

The sad thing is the fans would crowd source enough to fire and rehire a coach if they thought they could get someone worth a damn. Simple fact is the fans don’t trust the administration and you can’t blame them.

It makes it hard to trust him after the crap show Pruitt turned out to be.

But I’m not completely sold it’s all on Fulmer. Had Currie actually done his job properly we’d have Dan Mullen right now. By the time Fulmer got the reigns all of the big names (except The Pirate) were taken.

It’s hard not to give the guy who brought us so much another shot especially considering what dumb arse they’d try to replace him with. You know it’d be another moronic yes man.

This is the WORSE season ever, not one of them. We continue to break records that we thought that would ever be broken till we bring along Butch and Pruitt. Pruitt may actually be worse than Butch as a HC.

I could be wrong, But hasn't Pruitt made pretty good decisions outside of hiring Pruitt? Aren't other sports doing pretty well?

I'm on the fence with Pruitt. How he handles this situation, will help me make my mind up. I truly believe he wants this football program back on top and will do what needs to be done. Hopefully that is true

I think Fulmer has only made 1 other hire.

The fact that Fulmer gave Pruitt an extension and raise this off season should tell you all you need to know about Fulmers aptitude to judge coaching ability, talent, or success. He needs to go quickly and so does Donde Plowman for sneaking Fulmer that ridiculous extension and "retention bonus". The man is getting over a million dollars a year to finish the job of pounding UT football under the ground. There is a culture of complacency at UT and it starts at the top.

For the next coaching search Tennessee should have an advisory board made up of people like Raleigh McKenzie and Charles Davis to suggest to the powers that be who would be a solid candidate to be the next football coach at UT for a Majors/Neyland period of time.
