The CDC just last week changed that and said that there is protection for the folks who wear the mask:

Can you breathe air in and out while wearing a mask? Because if you can, you aren’t stopping much of the virus due to it’s ppm size.

The virus is contained in droplets. When we talk, cough and sneeze, these droplets come out. While the virus is small Enough to get thru a mask, the droplets arent.

In the case of aerosolized droplets, we have a bigger problem as masks likely won’t make any difference.

There are different types of masks. What I've said pertains to the common surgical masks. Some masks offer more protection for the wearer. The N95 masks with vents are designed to protect the wearer but not other people, because exhaled air blows out through the vents without being filtered.

You are lying. Most people do not seem quite happy to do so. When I shop, maybe half the people are wearing masks, and many of those are pulled down below the nose.

Have you tried telling them that? Everyone needs to do their part. That includes unsolicited education of everyone you meet in public.
