8 Vols assistants reject UT pay cut to help with losses due to covid

Pruitt didn't take a scheduled raise. That counted as his pay cut. None of these coaches have earned their wages.

No, deferring guaranteed money is not the same thing as taking a pay cut you'll never get back. When we fire Pruitt and he's sitting on Saban's sideline as an "analyst" he will still be getting all his money. He just has to wait for it.

It's about the look, Rick Barnes took a pay cut. Thats a really bad look

Rick Barnes is in no danger of being fired. I would bet that he's not taking a paycut but simply deferred some pay that the university will pay back at some point.

Bigger picture - The fact that KNS is doing this type of journalism leads me to think the athletic department might be trying to grease the wheels a little bit to gauge appetite for a coaching change.

Next I'd expect some type of rehash of the Schiano Sunday fiasco and how that put us in a bind when it comes to hiring a coach. I'd expect a story or 2 on keeping Barnes and Vitello as success stories. This would help give Fulmer "cover" for why he messed up the first football hire...

Everyone in the AD took a pay cut, except these guys. Including Rick Barnes and his staff
I didn't say whether they should or shouldn't. I mentioned team's performance.
I'll leave should and shouldn't to those morally wiser than me.

How much money we talking about, total for those 8, a difference maker or just symbolic posturing?

Weak argument. I wouldn’t expect, say an ICU nurse to take a pay cut but none of what they do is cancelled or postponed. Why shouldn’t they take a pay cut?
...because they're under contract and might not have a job in the near future. Maybe it's a bad look, but it's an even worse look to tell people what to do with their own money.

It's funny to me how many platitudes are thrown around about loving the school, being a VFL, no loyalty, but in this case when coaches are asked to take a cut to help the university during a tough time it's "HELL NO!" and several of our fans are in agreement And the ones that DID agree are VFLs who literally put their money where they mouth is.

You can go on and on about "contracts, agreements" blah blah blah but actions speak louder than words. If me taking a pay cut helps save someone's job, which this sounds exactly like, then hell yes I would do it and yes, I did do that this year.

If you though there was a good possibility you would be fired within a year regardless of accepting a pay cut or not would you accept it?

Are any of you who are running these guys down taking a pay reduction at your job willingly? These guys have bills to pay just like you.

Edit: I'm not a fan of their coaching btw.
It's a little different if you look at an average Knox Countian's median salary. Some barely scrape by, and most of these guys are blessed to make 10-20 times or more than most. So, your argument there is not comparing apples to apples.

Most of those guys know they will be fired soon. So the whole "take one for the team" mentality goes out the window. There's no loyalty at question here because loyalty is absent from the circumstances.

Also, Jeremy Pruitt didnt have to take a pay cut, but simply defer his GUARANTEED money. If I'm one of these coaches knowing there's a high likelihood that Pruitt throws me under the bus and fires me when the season is over and only me and my family get hurt while the head dumb@ss gets all his money? Yeah there's no way I'd allow that to happen to me.

Tennessee football: 8 assistants reject pay cuts. Martin, Graham accept

  • Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney
  • Defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley
  • Offensive line coach Will Friend
  • Quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke
  • Inside linebackers coach Brian Niedermeyer
  • Outside linebackers coach Shelton Felton
  • Tight ends coach Joe Osovet
  • Strength and conditioning coach A.J. Artis

Hell, I thought we all needed to be in this together. Or at least that is what the billboard by Cumberland Avenue with Trey Smith on it would have me believe.

Fulmer, who earns $900,000 in annual salary, will take the biggest pay cut from a percentage standpoint. He announced in August that he would accept a 15% pay cut. That reduction took effect on Nov. 1.
Fulmer also agreed to waive all incentive compensation he’s eligible for through June 30.

TBH Fulmer taking a pay cut is purely symbolic. He's making less money compared to the coaching staff and has already had a long and fruitful career getting paid the big bucks. He didnt take the AD job because he wanted the money. He took it to get back involved with the program he loves.

Jealousy is unbecoming.

Regardless of the how much they make its silly to expect someone to take a pay reduction. You wouldn't voluntarily why should they?
Projecting someone else's jealousy is even more unbecoming. Unless you're some kind of crystal ball specialist, you have no way of knowing what another person is feeling. Good attempt, though.

I guess I feel differently. If I was making 1.6 million as Chaney is I think I could take a pay cut and not be upset. Just shows they don’t really care about the university or the athletic department only about themselves.
You think the university and athletic department care about them?

I learned a long time ago in this mess we aint "in this all together". The sooner you recognize the givers and takers in this world, the better off you'll be.

I don't blame them 1 bit. I wouldn't agree to a paycut either.
The average American Citizen has struggled financially from Covid. These guys are overpaid for the importance they bring to the game and society in general. It is a bad look and I certainly believe it is blatant selfishness. Shame on them. With the play in the field this year I believe all these coaches on the list should be let go. No wonder the players are not bought in , many of the coaches are not bought in.
