A Simple View of the Arkansas Game

Here's what needs to happen. Not that I wish injury on anybody, but JG needs to maybe whack his throwing hand on a helmet during a throw and have to come out of the game. Whoever is #2 on the depth chart comes in and just balls out. The defense is sparked by it and shuts down Franks and Pruitt finally opens his eyes. Like I said, I don't wish injury on anyone, but it appears that is the only way the younger guys will have a shot. And, if they get a shot, they better go all out and play like it's the National Championship game.

Why Tennessee should win:
1. Overall talent - Tennessee does (and should always have) better talent on the field than a team like Arkansas. Getting good players to come to Fayettnam has to be one of the hardest jobs in football.
2. First year head coach - Arkansas has a coach who's never been a HC before and he's in his first year. Now, from everything I've ever read on VolNation, a first year head coach should not be expected to win because it take 3-5 years to do that
3. Lack of home field advantage - Arkansas isn't a tough place to win in the best of times, but with the virus limiting fan access, the crowd wont play a factor
4. Arkansas is weak against the run and Tennessee loves to run (even when they shouldn't)

Why Arkansas should win:
1. Tennessee has JG at QB and Arkansas has Franks - Arkansas should be overmatched in every other aspect of the game except for the most important position on the football field. JGs ability to single handedly destroy a game is maybe unparalleled in the history of college football.
2. Tennessee apparently has no backup QB options worth a darn. Pruitt consistently forces the idea that JG is the best chance. Not a good chance, but just the best chance. Apparently no QB development has happened for Shrout in 3 years or Maurer in 2 year.

So you might think Tennessee can overcome this? I think they should. But I think Tennessee loses this game 27 to 17 due largely to what will be an ineffective offense dumbed down to suit a guy who's not mentally in the game and backup QBs who are inexplicably not ready to be, well, backups.

We will not be able to keep our defense off the field. They will get gassed and Franks will pick us apart.

People have got to stop taking Pruett at his word that nobody could be better than JG. I would content it’d be difficult for any of the others to be worse than him. We also know maurer come in as a freshman and provided a spark several times. He weighed about 170 pounds at that time. He should be much more capable now. And most of us got to see Bailey playing on national television several times last year for maybe the best high school program in America. There is no chance in hell he wouldn’t perform better than JJ. But these guys can’t put themselves in the game. It defies all logic and at this point will almost certainly ensure Pruitt fails as a head coach. Maybe the only opportunity at this level he’ll ever get. So sad one dumb decision can determine a legacy.

This would be fantastic... but besides being cursed with a terrible QB, we are also cursed with the fact that he is indestructible. Even with a broken hand last year they kept trotting him out there. The JG curse doesn't end until he leaves campus for good.

Franks has never picked apart a defense, and I don’t think he will start Saturday. He may play well enough to beat us, but he is not a very good qb. That being said , I would trade Guarantano for Frank’s in a heartbeat.

Arkansas has very consistently scored 21+ points this year (with the exception of the Georgia game for obvious reasons). Tennessee has not been able to score points recently due to our offensive leader and our coaching staff's lack of faith in him producing a super vanilla, predictable and ineffective offense. Our defense will get gassed as they always seem to do, they wont get any sort of pressure on the QB and we will make Franks look Like Tua Tungavailoa.

Their pass defense wont matter much when we rush the ball 75 times and don't throw it more than 5 yards down field because Chaney has pulled the reigns tight on JG.
With the #10 rushing offense in the conference? Not sure that's a good plan if you're trying to win.

At the very least we need balance with some deep shots. If we can throw bombs on UGA and Bama, I'd think we can vs Arky.

Ya missed the part where they have a far better pass defense (#1 in SEC so far) while we are 11th in conference.
And they have some really good receivers, like us. Except their QB can get them the ball, on time, in space. Also, Franks is a big, athletic QB, who doesn't mind running the ball, to move the chains.

have they played bama yet?
While "there's the rub" for being #1...their stats are still very good no matter who they are playing. Nor are the ole miss, miss st, aub, tamu passing offenses bad at all.

Pass defense. Not offense. Their offense is not that good. Though not terrible...about like us.

Question is can our defense, especially pass defense, play as well as theirs? So far they are miles ahead of us.

Time for gurus Pruitt and Ansley to step up in the ranks with Odom, I suppose...

True, but the WR's make plays, when needed. Our pass defense has been exposed, and Franks has a big arm. Their offense moved the ball, at will, in the 2nd half, vs a pretty good Texas A&M defense.

I've got the 0/U at personal fouls by UT at 1, number of timeouts taken because the defense can't line up at 2, the number of team turnovers at 3, the number of procedure penalties at 3.

Guarantano aside, this has been a very poorly coached team.
Is that with or without a frustration crotch kick?

Arkansas players believe in their coach and are playing for him with passion right now. That team mindedness can overcome all sorts of stats. I'm concerned

Maybe we should just dress JG in a red jersey since he'll be throwing to their guys most of the day anyways...???
Yeah...a guy with a 2% career int rate lmao.

Delusional fans hating their own qb

Eh not really. Arkansas recruits around the top 25 most years. Not any harder than it is to recruit to the other non-blue blood SEC teams. Certainly not harder than recruiting to places like Kansas or Washington State, facilities and place to live alone are miles better.

I mean he had 300+ yards and 4 TDs, 0 INTs against Auburn. Completed 75% with 3 TDs, 0 INTs against A&M. He still has clunkers and may be inconsistent but when he’s good he’s pretty damn solid. Read an article where he could have played himself into a late round draft pick this year.

Sadly, this. Statistically, UT and Arkansas are so close in YPG, PPG, etc. (on both sides of the ball) for it to be a coin flip based on play to this point. Looking at the team stats, nothing really jumps out at me as a potential difference-maker here. But there is one critical data point, and it's a big one...

Unfortunately, it looks like JG will start, so now the "X" factor becomes the two QB's. If you gave me a choice between Franks, JG, BM, and Shrout in this one...JG is my fourth choice. I don't think HB is ready yet, or JG would be my 5th choice. That's just me, but with 99% of the polls reporting (pun intended) the number of "Wow, did you see that?" plays JG has made over the years is far outweighed by the number of "OMG, what was he thinking?" head-scratchers. On his best day he's a good game manager. On his worst...he's really bad. It is what it is.

Our best chance is a defensive, low-scoring affair where we can grind out a 3-10 point win based on field position and clock management. But if Franks gets hot; or JG goes cold; or the secondary doesn't tighten up; or our running game doesn't show up...then we're 2-4. Again, it is what it is.

I can't watch this one. I'd rather be pleasantly surprised to see later on that UT won a game I didn't watch, rather than spend 3+ hours getting progessively sicker to my stomach watching the team I love drop yet another stinker on the field. At this point, I just don't have any faith in the UT football team with JG at the helm of the offense. As he has proven time and again, he can completely flip the game to our opponent's advantage. Enough is enough.

It's been a long time since UT Football was relevant. Some day, we'll get back to the top tier of the SEC and start competing again as a Top 10 team. But that day won't be today, and that day won't come until UT finds a QB who can play football at the level it takes to be competitive in this conference.

Go Vols.

Of course it's not a good plan! That's exactly why UT will do it!

Franks is proof of what a QB driven game college football is. Josh Dobbs was another example. Butch Jones system was garbage, but a star QB can overcome all that in college.

Hard to believe a lot of us are predicting that Tennessee, A team with a 3rd year head coach and staff and a senior QB is probably going to lose to Arkansas, A team who up until this season lost 20 straight SEC games, Has a first year head coach and staff and a first year QB....Can somebody explain to me again why we are keeping these people around?!!?....I just don't know what to think, If this was happening anywhere else like Florida or Georgia they would've had him packing his bags a long time ago...It's honestly embarrassing.
