Windy's football discussion thread.

I agree. I would like to see a competitive team against the "big 3" but only for the sake of a good game. Reality is we are not competing for the East anytime soon. We aren't winning the SEC as long as Saban is at Bama. For all the teeth gnashing about our coach, no one is going to come here and get us up to championship caliber in the near future.
That’s all I’ve been saying for a couple years now

I added statements to this after you quoted. I hate the playoffs.
Perhaps I’m reading you wrong, but are suggesting the CFP has ruined a chance at parity within the power 5 conferences? I admit we’ve lost parity, interesting to think on the idea that that might be the reason

I’ll still watch just on the off chance of day’s like when a cousin convinced me to go the the Tennessee Vs ND away game where Jeremy Lincoln blocked a game winning FG attempt by ND with his ass.

We were lucky to get out of the stands alive.

But I would like to add to my previous statement that, at this point, the system is not fixable, with regard to parity.

It’s unrealistic and probably illegal to implement a draft. So that’s definitely out.

There’s no current way to use revenue sharing across all 130 teams to help level the playing field. But even if there was a way, I don’t think most teams would use the money to improve their teams chances at winning a championship.

Expansion of the playoffs would be fun (and I would support that), but it would not provide a realistic opportunity for G5 teams to win a championship because of the massive talent gap that exists.

Side note: Tennessee, and several other schools, have the funds and infrastructure to compete at the highest level. But not the on-field ability as of today or the very near future.

I’m always fascinated when the Zone is the only sub forum with rational discourse.
I believe that is because most of us have met one another in person and as a result, we respect each other as people. So we make a concerted effort to be respectful (when we’re having serious conversation. Not Will & Grace time or jokey joke time) because we have seen that person, spoke to their wives, and to a certain extent, know them as regular people.

Important to note: I do and say a lot of crazy things in real life, too. This isn’t really an act for me.

I agree with almost everything you just wrote @The Ron Mexico, but I don’t want the playoffs expanded, I like how much importance it gives the regular season. But I want to consider this idea that this in fact is destroying the parity within the teams and might reevaluate

Definitely. When you drive something like college to an unquestioned conclusion, the have teams will always come out on top. I loved the days of being able to argue about it and come back the next year ready to invest everything in each game. Take Bama as an example, they only have to make the playoffs, they don't care if they are #4 or #1. They have the horses to outlast most teams.

I've not met anyone from VN that I am aware of.

I think at this point any one still watching the Vols will always watch

Shrout is awful and HB hadn’t even touched the system until recently. This isn’t hard Joe
When Maurer is out there don't it to you look like it's the missing part of the offense? I am probably wrong but he looks like he could be great if given a chance and not hurt. It doesn't mean I am set with him I hope HB and Slater know they can beat him out. JG didn't have turnovers this game so that is a good sign but I just think there is a limit there.

And I was at the 7 overtime game because I always believe we can win!
