We can’t afford to tank this season. We need to show some progress. That is why I think you give Bailey and Maurer all reps. Say bye to Shrout. Keep JG on the bench as a back up just in case of a total melt down or injuries. Luckily Auburn is not very good like you said and it would be a good look to beat them. And I think we can handle Arkansas with two weeks to prepare. They have played better but hey caught a lot of those teams at a bad time. Especially Ole Miss. We need to finish the season 4-1 or 3-2 at worst and finish with a top ten class. Gonna be tough.
if it was easy, err'body'd do it. lol.

and no, i don't think anyone believes this season going totally backwards wouldn't be noteworhty.

agree...we need to finish...strong. like 4-1. 3-2 isn't a fireable offense, but it leaves yet another season on the books w/out beating anyone that says "wow, TN made a statement with that game".....

it isn't lost on me that for TN to get back to where we want to be, at some point that's going to have to include beating UGA, FL and Bama....somehwere along the way.....and i really hate that we didn't get to play OU this year....a win like that would have been a perception changer....and a confidence builder.

man, we've been having this same conversation for at least 5 years. smh.

He never made the active roster, and from what I can tell was cut before making the practice squad. Just curious if he did more than work out with them.
i thought he made the roster and played on ko coverage/special teams? could have sworn i saw him make a tackle on a kick off return or something? maybe that was a pre season game a couple years ago?? either way, i do remember being surprised to see him out there....

He played in preseason games

OK. But he didn't make a roster?

I think the Jumper/JG comparison is pretty fair. They both were/are starters because they could line up the team and convey the plays. Neither were/are good at making big plays themselves. Jumper was invited to practice with an NFL team the past couple of years. With as bad as JG has been, I wouldn't be surprised for a team to ask him to tryout. Like Jumper, he won't make a roster. I agree with the poster that JG is to our offense what Jumper was to our defense. The main difference is that since JG is on offense, his knack of turning the ball over is much more detrimental to our team.

New HC's are hired, talk about doing things their way, don't realize we have all seen it before, make good and bad decisions, muddle through seasons underperforming or at average, start losing, get fired, coaching search begins, rinse and repeat.

To effect positive change in a down cycle for any entity, one has to make sweeping changes that people believe in. Then one has to stay true to the message/vision and not accept mediocrity or failure. Leadership response to it when it happens has to be swift and fair. Expectations have to be raised, not lowered. As to Vol football, lack of focus and attention to detail have to be reflected on the field by 11 guys on every play. If any do not do that, they must be replaced immediately. The entire roster and coaching staff has to know that is the expectation each play, each practice, each game.

We know this is not happening with several positions and coaches. One coach was addressed this week, which is a positive. To send JG out there is a strong negative to the effort and sends the message that coddling of select players is permitted. Sending Taylor out as a starting CB did the same. The increasing penalties and turnovers are a direct reflection of the lack of focus and team discipline. Things will have to change dramatically for the program to advance. Otherwise it will be rinse and repeat.

Personally, want to see success and hope it is with Jeremy because it will mean he gets it. I will not count on it happening because I do not see the commitment to excellence by many on the roster that actually plays or the coaching staff yet.

I think he had an interception in a preseason game.

well the cycle we've been on is well documented.

i'm not ready to go to all the places you went here, with this staff yet. but last saturday was the first time i peeked down that path....the undisciplined play was not good...compounding the already horrific turnovers and other mistakes.

i think it's hard to judge committment level. and i have to go back to the circumstance this staff took over to begin with. our program was not a year or two, or even 3...away....most of us knew and acknowledged that.

the one thing i think most agreed on as well was that for this staff to be successfull long term, somewhere in the first few years, they were going to have likely "coach" their way to a big win. that hasn't happened yet. and we're in the middle of year 3, which would be a good time to do that....of course this year three is not like other year 3's.................

the frustrating part is that i think most of us, definitley me, thought performances like last Saturday against opponents like that were behind us. we may lose, to a peer (UK, MO, USCe et al...) but we're not getting blown out by 3 TD's by teams like that anymore.....wrong.

so that sucked. leaves an awful tasted behind....and the reaction this week is simply due to the fact that taste is still there, and now eveyrone is recalling anything close to a bad meal they've had over the past 3 years......

the next two weeks are big....because that will likely dictate how the next 5 games go.

we had a preseason? fall camp?

Maurer has battled nagging injuries in offseason acc to Hubbs. He was on Sports Animal last night talking about exact thing.
He seems fine jumping up and down after scores and playing scout QB every week. I think he is transferring and they are keeping it under wraps until year end. If he plays then I am complete FOS and will eat crow. But if he doesn’t play at all this year, I think it will be pretty telling.

i'll admit, it will raise an eyebrow if Maurer dosn't play at all this season.....

I mean, he IS dealing with some mental health issues. I’d not be super shocked if we didn’t. I like the boy a lot tho. He seems like a good teammate at the very least.
