"So it’s a one-season streak of doing what you absolutely have to do at UT to even start thinking about relevance. Stoops, who has recruited and instilled winning DNA at UK far beyond what seemed possible there for decades, won’t be conceding anything. And for all of UT’s dominance in this series, Stoops is 2-2 since getting rolled by way-more-talented Butch teams in his first four tries. Imagine him with a quarterback." Joe Rexrode, The Athletic

Sadly, this is the state of a once-proud football program. Trying to compete with UK. Hell, even Arkansas looks better than the Vols at this point.

Yep, and this is Pittmans first year................(or year zero according to Lyle)

Still long season ahead. And, seemingly longer as of today.

We'll see. After this weekend, which we shouldn't expect to win, although that is why we play the games, we have 5 games that will set the real tone of the season and into the future.

Arky, A&M, Auburn, vandy, floriduh. 5 games we have to win........2-3 after this weekend presumably, and, that's what we got. We are going to see what this staff and team are really worth.

3-7 is possible.....and that looks, so bad.......but, that is today.....we shall see.

Dude that Arkansas game is going to be very interesting. If Pittman tops Pruitt, even the sleepers are going to have a tough time spinning that one.

If he loses to Pittman year one and winds up definitively NOT being the guy, Tennessee football is effectively screwed. We cannot afford to go another 2 to 3 years rebuilding. Heck, you are recruiting kids who were born in 2002-2005 'ish (more or less) and they dont even remember a time when Tennessee was actually GOOD..........let alone world beaters like in the 90's. We will be effectively dismantled into the next ho-hum insignificant team playing all our games at noon on ESPN+ or streaming online only.

Well UK isn't the UK of old and had a lot of returning players this year. A loss to them wasn't out of the question, even predicted by some in the media before the year started. Getting hammered by them leaves a mark/ stain on Pruitt's tenure here. The blowout losses during his time have become a red flag. Too many times this team just looked unprepared to play a football game..

Unprepared to play a football game? Seems like there should to be someone associated with the program whose job is to prepare the team to play football games....

They just signed that guy to a extension, so he isn't going anywhere. Seems we've been through this a time or two. Deja vu..

They are probably a 5-5 team. That isn't much different than the UK of old. Saturday's performance was dreadful, but this place overreacts to losses. It just does... and in melodramatic fashion.

Over the top melodrama.

We had to set him up to be one of those multi-million dollar Alabama grad assistants before the fans caught on to what is happening.

They let UGA beat them two weeks in a row. They didn't show for that game. It's on the coach. A coach we're invested in like usual.. Another stop gap type guy we'll pay a kings ransom too to get rid of ,then have to hear about how cash strapped we are and can't afford a guy that has done it before. It's a tired pattern with this bunch.

It’s true.
It's hyperbolic nonsense from the same people who swore we were going 3-9 last year after the BYU loss. I'm not defending the way the team played on Saturday... or how they were coached. This is a hyper-reactive forum, however. We go to extremes and become melodramatic. It's not the end of the world. Really.

No , it’s not the end of the world in a larger sense of what is important in the world. If you are a Vol fan who is passionate for the program getting back to relevancy it is close to the end of the world.

So, I try to be realistic with expectations. I've repeatedly stated that any coach would need a lot more time and a lot more recruiting to put UT back at the top of the SEC. However, the loss to UK this season and last seasons losses to GA-State and BYU are inexcusable.

For this program to be considered to be "on the right track," it must first win the winnable games---which it's consistently failing to do.

On a single game level it is. On a grand scheme level, I don’t think it is.

You only have so long to sell a program before the sales pitch doesn’t work anymore.

So, another year of .500 ball with a boring offense is going to start to hurt

A 5-5 season with an all SEC schedule is an 8-9-10 win season in any other year depending on who your non conference teams are.

Needs time. How much time? 5 years? 10?
When is it reasonable to expect not to get blown out at home by Kensucky?

We were completely devoid of talent and size all over the field and on both sides of the ball. We had a few shiny spots here and there, but most of our roster would have only made the practice squad for the level of talent needed from a top tier team.

I would expect by year three, UT should be winning the winnable games without question. By year five, this program should be able to punch Bama or UGA in the mouth. I'm not convinced this program has been able to do, or will be able to do, either at this point.

What? That is dumb.

What? That is dumb.

I’ll give a practical example. Florida lost to Kentucky in 2018 and it didn’t matter and no one cared because they beat FSU and won 10 games including a New Years 6 Bowl.

You go 5-7, 8-5 and 5-5 with no signature wins, a few head scratching losses and an anemic offense and it’s going to make for a hard sell on the recruiting trail.

He sort of has to beat Florida now for most of this fan base to be positive about the season.
