eh. i think JG is what he is and i think his celing is just not very high.
it was the single biggest concern for 2020 as soon as the bowl game ended.....it wasn't a surprise or an unknown. for us to take another step, we absolutely had to/have to get better at QB.
and you lose that entire off season.....i think that mattered a lot. it mattered to JG (to what degree, who knows...i can't tell you that i'm positive the performance would be that much different than we've seen so far this season, and i was skeptical it would be even with the full off season), it mattered for HB, shrout and maurer as well...HB in particular....we went from wondering if he could put himself in to position to compete for the 1 or 2 spot, to him being a complete non factor with no real QB competition to speak of.
blaming the staff for evals or development or whatever at this point is just kinda lazy....i think it's fair to say that while we targeted HB early on and recruited him with purpose, we kinda "wound up" with the other two guys....since we werent' able to land any of the others we went after, and chose not to go after Sam Howell, as has already been discussed. now if you want to cast some blame for not doing that, fine, i'm gonna agree with you....but past that.....i think the single biggest issue the staff faced with the QB room is that i don't think anyone anticpated JG's struggles to continue at the same pace for a lot of the same reasons all 3 years he'd be at the helm at TN.
