There's the top four, and then there's everyone else

I’ve always heard the issue with Texas is these elite talents coming out of high school are so well coached and conditioned that a lot of them are nearing their athletic peak already. So you sign a 4* and that sounds nice but if he was from anywhere else he’d only have 3

Texas is one of those programs that gets media love every pre-season, recruits with the best, and then proceeds to put out a gooey soft product that never meets pre-season expectations
I was trying to think.., has there been a coach that came from the AAC (like Fuentes, Norvell, Herman etc ) that’s been overwhelming successful after leaving that very weak league? I’m sure is one but I can’t think of one.

These rankings indicate the score between the 5th ranked team and us at #15 is closer than the score between #1and #4. That tells.me that if we went just by this ranking we are basically even with anyone out not in the top 4. Of course there are a 1000 other factors that come into play.

But we went dollar store coach again and decided to let someone learn on the job here.
Coaching hires and fires don't exist in a vacuum. The handling of Fulmer through the firing of Butch play a part in how coaches view UT. That's on the AD, BOD, etc.

Honest question, what big-name coach (however you define that) would consider UT without doing what aTm did with Fisher (huuuuuuge buyout)?

You can't use history, tradition, and all that stuff. While it matters to us fans, coaches care about $$,$$$,$$$

Yes i agree with the talent gap and gotta have talented players and all that stuff, at the sametime there has to want to, a will, toughness, and a good gameplan involved... You cant just lineup and go to a toe to toe slugfest with these giants right now at this time so there has to be some creativeness involved... Thats what made boise st so successful a few years back, thats also the reason Alabama is not walking over Auburn year after year and they are just ahead of us in the talent ranking.

Next year should be interesting with a bunch of our 4+ star guys getting an extra year of eligibility. Not sure what they are going to do with the scholarship limits but if we get to keep some of those upperclassmen and also bring in a new crop, it will add instant depth across the board creating more parity within the conference

So three of those 4 top teams account for the vast majority of national championships since 2009. For all of you out there who think “stars” don’t matter, well here is your big play of crow. Stars are one of the most important things for ultimate success in CF.

The teams with the most elite talent win much more often.

We will be the same next year with #2 at QB. There will be no changes. We will not beat the top teams from the SEC. We will be their win. The SEC is loving this. That the SLEEPING GIANT hasn't woke up yet.

Here's the deal, I'm happy that we're at least beating the scrubs that we should beat. Vanderbilt, USCe, Kentucky, and Missouri shouldn't be beating us, let alone have winning streaks against us. That's what it has been for the better part of a decade. That's finally starting to change, as we currently have a winning streak against all of those teams, and have won two in a row against the west teams that aren't Bama. That's obviously not where we want to be as an end goal, but I'll take that over bottom dwellers.

If we manage to go 7-3 this year, that's tangible progress. Even 6-4 would be some progress. Look back to Butch's last year. We realistically could have gone 0-10 or 1-9. Other than Bama (and we at least have a chance in that one), there's no other team that we can't beat given that Florida's defense forgot how to play football.

Also just look at that chart. See how many 4 stars we have in relation to the rest of the top 15. Once some of those 3 stars start becoming 4 and 5 stars I believe that we'll be ready to make that jump.

Lol. It was reported we were ready to give Gruden $100 million. Money wasnt the issue. I k ow you want to pretend its all there is to hiring a HC but you are wrong. Gundy turned us down. So did Mullen. You act as if any program can throw money and get whatever coach they want. If that were the case then Texas would have gotten Saban.

Although we are improved from last year, right now we are an "everyone else" in terms of total talent level on the team.

We might beat top 5 every now and then in the near future, but at our present overall talent and depth level, a consistent solid competition against these teams is just likely not going to happen.

In their up-and-coming years, Clemson did some good things with 10-15th ranked talent, and it eventually resulted in graduating to their current high recruiting levels.
At #4 in composite talent, they are still somewhat overachieving (via a solid and stable coaching staff and a great QB) compared to the talent for #1-3 teams.

On the other hand Texas is puking with 49 four-stars on their team (with a head coach that many of us wanted).

Gotta have a good/great coach, a really good QB, and great overall talent and depth. We just aint there yet with all three.

Let's hope for some solid signature wins this year and next that result in a bigger upswing in recruiting.

The "eyes of Texas" have wept a lot in recent years, which brings a smile to this gnarly face. We gave them Sam Houston, Davey Crockett, etc. & they give us Rick Barnes.

Texas high school is MASSIVELY overrated.
They can and do produce high end qbs but past that its mostly just hype.

The “hot” coaches that everyone drools for almost always come up short when they step up to tougher competition

Weird thread.

Want to be in on the convo every year?? Be historically relevant like Alabama. Hire a guy named Dabo. Reside in a recruiting goldmine like GA or LSU. Have an exclusive TV contract with NBC like ND. Nike money. Play a crap schedule like Ohio State. Recruit TX FL and CA like your life depends on it.
