I’m too old and too heavy to any kind of rock climbing where the incline is over 50 degrees, but heights are not my thing. When we hike and get to a cliff or overlook I usually get down on my belly if I’m going to look directly over the edge. Must have been all those dreams of falling as a kid 😁

That always led to a worse whooping. I learned early to stand still and take it.
It did seem to make the whooping last longer.... that’s for sure.
I’m somewhat mixed on this type of thing. Perhaps it’s because I had daughters and not sons. I know I needed it from time to time, but probably not as much as I received.
I’ll admit that I used to contemplate my actions based on the whipping that was to follow if I got caught doing what I knew I shouldn’t. Sometimes the risk was worth taking.

My dad is a pretty easy going guy but when he lost it the whipping was bad. Really only two things got him to that point and that's when I did something really stupid or when he'd had enough of mom asking "are you going to do something about this". Those were the worst.

Worst for us is when one sent you to the other. Even if they didnt know what you did, if one couldnt deal with the issue right then the other came down hard for causing so much issue with the first.

Never worried about my mom, she was really excitable and would overreact but she couldn't hit hard enough to really hurt. She would do the "your grounded for a year" or some other crazy punishment that lasted a week at most.

I can only recall my dad spanking me one time. He’d find work for me to do as punishment. My mom?...... she was a farm raised country girl that had to slop the hogs and etc..... and she could really whip that ass.

My did the same. Worst punishment I ever received was a couple days out of school suspension, dad almost worked me to death.

The best words we could hear in our house with regards to youth conflict resolution were “just wait till your father gets home!” when then knew mom wasn’t going to kill us and dad was no where near the sadist mom was.

My mom is quick tempered, she would swing whatever she could get her hands on but rarely did it hurt. She broke enough brooms hitting me that one year I brought her 3-4 brooms for mothers day. She didn't get the humor.

Last ass whooping I got was a few days before graduation. I called my coach Bubba (his nickname) and he took me to asst principals office and took a plexiglass paddle with holes and gave me 3 licks. My ass burned the rest of the day. My dad laughed his ass off when I told him because they were friends.

Leonard Coffman was my Health teacher in high school after he finished coaching high school football. From what I have heard, he was relieved of his high school coaching duties for beating up a mouthy fan who verbally abused him at a game in Erwin in about 1960 ish. Coffman had a paddle drilled with several holes also. I assumed that it was for reduced drag, and allowed for a higher paddle speed.

For those not familiar with Coach Coffman, he was fullback/nose guard on Tennessee's great football teams from 1938-40. He was a teammate of George Cafego, who said that Coffman was the meanest S.O.B. he ever saw on a football field..

If George Cafego thought somebody was tough or mean, I'd just take it to the bank. Sure wish Cafego had been around to straighten out Dooley and Butch ... and the kicking game at times.
