lol

You realize that every single player that’s ever played QB has had plays where getting hit effected their footwork right ???

Mentioning they didn’t step into pressure doesn’t mean they were scared like you said.

Crazy you act like this is only bad because it’s a 5th year QB. Go watch Tom Brady play QB and tell me how he does when pressure is into his face with stepping into his throws
He did not say he didnt step into pressure...christ sakes...we can take a word for word what a wr says to say it was a great pass..but cant take JG literal words...

Could be coaching up a player...I don't trust JG confidence level right now....I hope that changes
You mean cheerleading the player? Encouraging him, reassuring him, bolstering him?

Maybe so. Could be. But you wouldn't expect to see him reassuring JG through the media. You'd think he would do that face to face.

Anyway, you just reminded me of that home spun wisdom about the four roles of a leader: teacher, preacher, coach, and cheerleader. Goes something like this: every member of the team has two key aspects: skill and will. When a leader finds a subordinate who has the will to succeed but lacks skill, the leader has to turn himself into a teacher. When the subordinate has the skill but lacks will, the leader has to become coach-like--kick him in the butt, motivate him, get him moving. When the subordinate already has both the will and the skill, the leader is free to just cheerlead and encourage. And when the follower has neither the will nor the skill, it's time to read him his last rites...so be a preacher. Heh.

Thanks, I'd not thought about that old idea in a while.

he said he was throwing off his back foot.

and you took that as an admission of him being scared.

facts are ALL QBs have had issues stepping into pressure and JG with all his issues shouldnt have to prove his toughness to anyone.
The guy has taken more hits than any QB I can recall

It’s a legit criticism of him to say he’s takes too many hits and needs be “scared” of getting hit by getting the damn ball out of his hands. Not this crazy stuff you are making up

I would assume so as well...but with todays need of instant gratification by our youth and apparently some posters...a public vote of confidence can help alot....

Bruins' right, Whodey, throwing off your back foot, failing to step into a throw, "leaning back" because a defender is bearing down on you, that doesn't necessarily mean the passer is afraid. It is often more physics than psychology. You can't step into the throw because you don't have the room you need. Plus, stepping into the throw and reducing the space between you and the defender increases the chance your pass is going to be deflected.

That may be all JG meant. Impossible to tell from the rambling way he responded to the question.

But we do know JG's a pretty gutsy guy, willing to take hits. He's pretty tough. So Bruin's interpretation seems the more valid one.

Alright man. We will agree to disagree...ill leave this...he has taken a lot of hits.....im not questioning his toughness, im questioning mentality and confidence...becaue if it was 1 or 2bl throw off target under pressure..yeah...totally get...but he had more throws with a clean pocket that were rushed and off the mark...and completions doesnt mean it wasa good pass...b ut again we can agree to disagree

I agree with this for sure

confidence has been a major issue for him although I thought he played confidently Saturday. If not he wouldn’t have made his two best throws(one where he stepped into pressure) when we needed it the most.

I'm confused...Im not saying he is worried about getting hit cuz hes a pansy...hell no far from it....kids an old school toughness...(would have been a great TE IMO..Kittles type)....He made some plays...thats why not all is lost...

Gotcha!!!!!! Makes sense....my bad on the verbiage

All good. My apologies for coming at you so strong as well.

I wonder if JG is a little bit like a rocky movie in where he needs to get hit a number of times before he settles in. In his career there have been times where I didn’t think the poor guy was going to survive another hit and he get getting up wanting more it seemed. He didn’t get hit nearly as much at usce. Hopefully he doesn’t need getting hit to settle in this week

JG does not play like a RS Sr in the SEC should play. I really don’t think that’s debatable. He is inconsistent and misses throws that a freshman should be able to make.

This isn’t about supporting or not supporting JG. I support him and hope that he improves. Continuing to make excuses for his poor play for a third year is just ignoring the simple fact that he has not developed to where he should be, and it will eventually cost us a game or two.

I’m also OK with saying the staff bears some responsibility for this situation. When you have to bench your starter to get his head right it’s time to start making a Plan B.

I like this staff and believe we are probably playing the best guy who gives us a chance to win today. Again, the coaching staff own this.

And FTR, Im not a neverJGer or one who doesn’t “support JG”. I’m just giving you my analysis of the situation. I wish the kid the best.

The better he does the better the Vols do, and I think that’s what we all want at the end of the day.

Well put, I believe the coaches are just a little too risk averse, I understand that, and may not agree they should be but we we see how it plays out. If we had had a normal spring and fall camp I'm not sure JG would be starting.

He seems kinda like a streaky shooter in basketball...just a flick of the eyes to seenif someone is closing throws off the shot...or they ignore any closeing players and rush...he needs to find thay Sweet spot

Good comparison. However, I am beginning to believe that JG has the yips.

Please show me where he has improved

It looks like a few people already answered for me.

Don't misunderstand though. I am absolutely NOT satisfied with his play at QB. But after watching the first game over and over again. He has improved. Not nearly enough tho. Still want to see Brian Maurer get is chance next game. And....Harrison Bailey.

He appeared to know where to go with the ball but his accuracy was poor. One reason is he throws nothing but fast balls.

JG is not an SEC caliber QB. It’s not a knock against him as a person. I’m not one either. But if he hasn’t figured it by now, he isn’t going to. Nearly everything he completes downfield of any significance is either a jump ball or the result of freak catch. It is simply his ceiling.

I get your frustration, but your post is inaccurate. He is a SEC caliber QB. He’s currently rated, and has been rated as a middle of the pack SEC quarterback for 3 years now. He was actually the SEC Player of the Week last year against Missouri.

However, we need an elite, or exceptionally good QB for us to be able to compete with elite SEC teams. I would quantify an elite QB as one who is ranked in the top 3 in the SEC at the end of the year...and I don’t foresee that happening in the near future.

He missed 5 or 6 throws but completed 60%+. Some of the misses were maddening, but I think we're a long ways from yips territory.

His 60% completion percentage has been a hallmark of his play for most of his career at UT, but it still didn't change the fact that coming into the season he had the worst accuracy of all FBS QBs since 2018, in throws farther than 10 yards.

He didn't play "poorly" Saturday, but trying to champion 60% accuracy at the same time as you are watching him consistently missing wide-open down field throws and the offence is going 1/11 on third down conversions, is a bit a disingenuous.
