Charting every pass from South Carolina game

We dont deal in context here
..freshman are expected to play at the same level as the 5th yr QB....hence the dowing on BMs play last year....so no per PulaskiVolFan freshman dont get s pass on lack of knowledge or inconsistency only JG
You really have no clue and it's comical. Absolutely nothing you say here I believe nor have I ever even said the stupid $@/+ you just posted here. You want to call me out and keep trying the old "gotcha" game that's fine by me but at least quote something that I actually believe as opposed to these fantasy beliefs you have predetermined me to have.

Uh oh. Triggered!!!

You have been quote enough making comparison between JG and BM last year...the fact your too thick to comprehend that JG should have been light years ahead of a lowly 3 star project tells me you dont have a clue...
Fans are frustrated because for 5 years we have sat and watched mediocrity out of the QB position...we have watched freshman from other teams play better...we watched a guy who had barely even touched a football during a game in 5 years come off the bench and play better...

Again trying to defend how good JG is by comparing him to a player who everyone said shouldnt have played or was even ready is pathetic...

You call you self a vol fan....never once i have made any comment about JG being injured and makong light of it like you have about BM and his concussions....your lower then scum in my book to even joke about that...it sad pathetic little men like yourself that perpetuate the frustration toward JG more..i promise if tou would stfu and stop. Youd see people lay off him quite a bit
Nice well thought out post, a good proofreading might have made it even better I feel. Keep trying, as you're still struggling a bit with your exact verbiage.

Just thought it would be interesting to go back and watch the game and chart the throws to see how JG ended up with decent to good stats but we were only 1 of 12 on 3rd downs. (* = would have converted 3rd down)

1. completion
2. incomplete (open, overthrow)*
3. completion
4. completion
5. completion
6. completion
7. completion
8. incomplete (Keyton looks over wrong shoulder?)
9. incomplete (open, overthrow)*
10. complete
11. complete
12. incomplete (open, behind)*
13. completion
14. incomplete (coverage)
15. incomplete (open, behind)
16. complete
17. complete
18. complete
19. complete
20. complete
21. complete
22. incomplete (coverage)
23. incomplete (open, too hard)*
24. incomplete (coverage)
25. incomplete (open, overthrow)*
26. complete
27. complete (TD)
28 complete
29. incomplete (drop)
30. incomplete (open, overthrow)*
31. complete

So based on the bad throws and how open the WR was, JG missed six 3rd down conversions to open WRs so that 1 of 12 could have easily been 6/7 of 12. Almost all of his bad throws were on 3rd down and that was a huge difference in this game. The game is not close if hit those 3rd down passes.
Yep. He should have been 31/31. Happens all the time with this guy

Good post

I’d argue there is no such thing as “too hard” when fitting the ball into a tight window like that throw was. The WR just had to catch it. If the throw is softer it brings a pick into play.

Mmmmm, idk. JG has an uncanny way of drilling a dart right at a 6yd crossing route who is wide open. One of his biggest issues is proper pace on balls. A lot of receivers have dropped those in the past 4 years. True, they SHOULD catch. But, like in basketball, one of the skills of a good of or passer is throwing catchable passes to various players, especially bigs.

Everyone has pointed out all the high throws and inaccuracies from Saturday. But, a few throws from JG impressed me as improvement Saturday.

#1 The flea flicker that ended up in a dump off and 40yd gain. JG surveyed the down feild options and backed off, then gets serious pressure and drops to the safety valve with a catchable dump off. This showed some football skill to get out of a sack. Also, we completed a dang screen pass. Couldn't do it to save our life last yr. Great decision and execution and big play.

#2 The 35 yarder to a wide open Brandon Johnson while getting drilled. JG took a ton of his usual pace off the ball and floated it perfectly to where BJ should have ran and hit him with a long easy handoff. He was so open that I could have completed it without any rushers. But this was a pretty sight for JG. He's missed this type many times. Jennings at Bama for an easy TD comes to mind from last year.

#3 The next play after getting blasted. JG drops into pocket and throws Palmer a gorgeous 35yd rainbow in stride for a TD. Beautiful pass and catch.

IDK if he has much upside on accuracy, but we could (and have) done much worse at the position.

JG bad passes.

2:27
4:16 - Overthrown. Amazing catch. Probably being too picky here.
6:10
6:25
9:20
9:47 - Miscommunication. Probably on receiver.
10:56
17:26
17:41
18:46
18:52
21:51
The amazing catch was a good throw. In a location where only the Wr could catch the ball. One of the best passes JG has thrown in his career here and I’m not a JG fan by any means and felt overall JG cost us at minimum 21 points Saturday.

JG's biggest issue today is what it was in game one, his attitude. It is not mechanics or ability, he can do it, he obviously does in practice when no fans are watching. However, in a games he wants to show everyone that he is great so he pushes harder, hence the problem on money downs. Just watch when he makes a good play like the TD pass and him shooting the arrow, and him walking around with the ball after the game like he deserved the game ball. He wants to be great and just pushes to hard, when he could be if he didn't push.

Did we not end the game on a kneel down? So maybe he kept the game ball so it could be awarded by the staff instead of chunking it back to an official!!! Doubt he left the locker room with it.

At least he went to the right guy each time and on time.
He just needs to get the overthrows under control and he would have had an All SEC type game like everyone wants.

Like every QB, JG has throws he is very comfortable with and throws where he has to put more effort into. I really need to look at the film, but some of the overthrows probably fall into the latter catergory. Additionally, this was the first game with a relatively new WR corp, so timings still need to worked out in game speed. JG was much more decisive, and you could tell he knew where he wanted to go with the ball without telegraphing it to the defense. He also threw to good spots and protected the ball well. If you take the "dink and dunk" passes out of the equation JG was 16-28, or a 57.1% completion rate. Obviously, this completion percentage will need to improve for us to beat any of the top-tier teams. All-in-all, not a terrible start to the season.

I like and appreciate what you did here. What I would like to see though is how many of those completions were on short throws (like ones to backs behind the line) or on those little passes (more like handoffs, but forward) to the WR that runs right in front of him. I think those passes increase his completion stats and are throws that grandma could have made.

Any short throw that JG completes is not a gimme. Hitting the backs on swing passes has not been his forte'. Much less Grandma's.

13. Kellen Mond (A&M) (62.6)
14. D'Wan Mathis (UGA) (61.9)
15. Terry Wilson (UK) (54.7)
I dont know what formula they use, but 61.9 for Mathis? Dude had the worst passing day by all QBs by far. Heck, his passer rating was only 62 and total QBR was only 9 while only passing for 55 yds....He should be WELL below average, IMO.

Found this:

On his one-handed catch on a third down play Saturday…
‘It was cool. I lost the ball for a little bit in the lights. I lost it for a second. It finally came back down, I found it and I was able to get a hand on it.’

Point awarded to Abingdon Vol Fan

watched the replay of game, JG sucks !!!! Im not spending my money on traveling to Knoxville until JG is gone from UT !!!

Fear not. Your big $$$ are safe and sound. Only 25K getting in the door this year anyway. You can stay home w the rest of us and watch JG go up against other SEC teams, few of which will have a better QB than our sucky one.
