Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

Correct. It has nothing to do with their health, as their risk is approximately zero. In other words, these athletes are being robbed of their liberties and close to a year of normal college "life," while being subjected to a multitude of uncomfortable tests, even though they are healthy, so that teams can be at or near full-strength for games. It's needless exploitation.

I understand why schools are doing it, so the answer is to change the guidelines for quarantine and testing. Somebody is going to have to stand up and demand a change.

It’s about liability. If you want this to happen then these organizations have to take every possible precaution from a liability standpoint. Do you know if there are long-term effects from contracting covid? Of course not because nobody does. If that were to be the case (that there are some long term effects) then it is absolutely in the school’s/conferences’/ncaa’s best interest to be cautious and cover their bases.

The irony of feigning concern over a virus possibly effecting players long term, meanwhile they play a sport where they beat each other’s brains in for 60 minutes.

Think this virus will effect my breathing when I’m old coach?

Absolutely not, you’ll be dead way before then.

That is a valid point buuuuuut, I think you’re in the wrong place to disparage the game of football lol

I'm not disparaging the game, I'm just laughing at the pearl clutching over a virus with unknown/no long term effects while they engage in a sport with well known long term effects.
1. Those are not mutually exclusive.

2. I explained the liability aspect which, for all of these same institutions, is also a huge issue with injury. Seems they are at least trying to learn their lesson.

3. You’ll have to explain the “no long term effects” thought to me. The virus very likely has existed for less than a year, so that conclusion is... interesting.

The long term effects could be applied to anything. There are tons of unknowns. The biggest one recently is brain damage/cte stuff.

We have Trey Smith playing with blood clots. We had a diabetic playing the game, Alex Ellis. Who is the db with the narrow spine issue, he is trying to make it back.

As long as the players are afforded the ability to make their own decisions it's hard to blame the school unless they withhold information or care.

It's possible it has long term effects. It's also possible it has none. As you said, how can we know any of that?

I agree that making their own decision when presented with informed options that stem from decades of experience treating something is the right thing. The point with covid, though, is that experience doesn’t exist so if contracting the virus eventually leads to chronic lung issues or predisposition to something else and a school negligently increased exposure to everyone involved just to “get back to football” then there might be hell to pay down the line.

It’s here to stay. We are going to have to live with it whether it has long term effects or not.

Stop with the fear nonsense. Of course any life lost is a tragedy but on the grand scheme of things this is not bad. Your commentary is nauseatingly mindless and drama-filled gibberish.

I’ve never seen a group of people afraid of simple discussion in my whole life... and who is pandering fear? I simply state the obvious reason why schools/conferences might be cautious with their student athletes this fall and that hurts your fragile feelings. We get it, you don’t like pandemics. Guess what, none of us do, but some handle it better than others.

That is rich. I don't know if you have, but I can't tell you how many times in this thread when the numbers are placed in context we get the "well I bet you would feel different if it were your mom, or grandparent".

I think most on here know at this point it is about liability, and that point isn't really debatable. But we seem to have two camps - one that thinks the liability concern is dumb, and one that thinks it has merit.

I think it is dumb. Long term effects or not, as I have said before, this is going to do what it is going to do.
