This is Bill Connelly/ESPN’s SP+ national rankings by unit and overall. September 1st was the last preseason ranking with all FBS teams and this week was the first in-season ranking that included the Pac-12 and Big-10 teams added back. A lot of non-playing teams moved up in the rankings this week so take it for what it’s worth. It’s a data driven analysis and obviously not exactly a pure on-field analysis.
I’m showing the change in rankings for SEC teams from the preseason to after our first games. The SP+ clearly shows that Kentucky was the most overrated team in the conference based on preseason hype. LSU has fallen a bit and may fall considerably farther. Auburn I think is still overrated. Ole Miss doesn’t have anything that passes for a defense so I think Florida looked better than they are, especially on offense. I think most here were already convince that Georgia's offense and A&M's whole team were overrated. jmo.
I think we made South Carolina’s offense look better than it actually is. Overall, I thought we played hard but didn’t execute well on defense. I thought Chandler ran well. I watched HT’s pick six a few times because I really liked Alontae’s blocking on that play. I think overall we have a lot of room to improve, everywhere, and can do so if we can get guys back and healthy and get a lot more practice reps under our belt. jmo.
I thought Deandre Johnson had a good game but it was against South Carolina so we’ll see. I think Tyler Baron made some noise. If a QB has accuracy issues from what I’ve read it is futile to expect that to change in college. I do think it says something that Pruitt and Chaney apparently don’t think they have anything better. I read comments across the internet last night from college football fans and the consensus seems to be JG’s stats generally don’t look anywhere near as bad as his on field performance looks although I personally thought the TD pass to Palmer actually looked pretty good. jmo.
We played a lot of guys and I think it could be argued that Jimmy Calloway and Jimmy Holiday saved the game for us. Slaughter will be better with some more reps. Brandon Johnson shined. The Offensive line needs to get in sync with more consistency. The radio guys gave JG the nod for player of the game but I think I would have voted for about 10 other guys in front of him. jmo.
I think we’re going to be fine but we do need to close the gap between what we may have expected our team to look like this year and our first game performance. I think there’s plenty of opportunity to do that and we should take care of business this week against Missouri and then that test will come when we head to Athens to face Georgia. I still think we come home from Athens with a win but in order to do so we’ll need to be a bit more polished across the board than we were in Columbia. jmo.
