Sorry, but our biggest liability is our QB
This. So much this.
Shamburger and Theo , starters, were missing altogether. McCullough hasn't practiced but a couple times and wasn't available except for emergency use really. Our (arguably) best all conference corner Thompson had to play safety due to this. Started a true freshman in Slaughter...who had a great game except when matched up 1 on 1 with Smith, who was lightning fast and nobody could cover (by design..Bobo kept him over a safety/LB and ate our lunch) Taking all this into account, we are lucky they didnt hang 50 on us back there.
If everyone is healthy and available next week, we will only have 1 person in the same spot in our normal nickel (5 DB) defense...that will be A. Taylor at corner. Who needs to shut his damn mouth and play ball. Or sit down...and as well as he played, Banks should be benched immediately for getting 2 personal fouls, and then continued to run his trap even after both penalties. If CJP doesn't make Banks run stadium steps until he pukes...he is doing something wrong.
With new starters in 4 out of 5 spots on the back end, I expect our secondary to be a strength as they get more practice and playing time. CJP has consistently made his position group a strength of our team. Also excited to see K. Lawrence get more reps as he gets more comfortable back there. Heard lots of good things about him from practice.
...sigh....at this point, JG is a known liability. He made better decisions last night, but he is horribly inaccurate. I loved Dobbs, and am still his fan, but during the Dobbs Era, I never ever thought that I would see a LESS accurate passer at UT. Sometimes Dobbs couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. JG is actually worse. He went 1 for 12 on third down conversions last night....because he missed, badly, wide open receivers on 3rd down time and time again. Drive killers every single time. He has been the same for the last 17 years that he has been at UT...terribly inaccurate and late. These days, nearly EVERY single game we have a commentator mention how late and high he throws...or that he throws a 90mph fastball at a WR or RB that is only 10 yards away at most. It is embarrassing, and it never, ever happens to Bama, UGA, UF, etc...they manage to put a decent passer under center every year. We keep going with JG who we know is mediocre at his best.....
We will NEVER take the next step as a program with JG at QB. Never compete with the top tier SEC teams on an every week basis. He is a good kid, and tough, but he simply is not good at his primary responsibility: throwing the football. It is so stinking hard to watch. If he comes back next year, and doesn't get beat for the starting job, we will lose the upward trajectory we have right now as a program...and slide into perpetual mediocrity
