JG keeps throwing high fast balls like that against quality teams and there will be pick-6's. He's just not a good QB, folks. He has flashes and glad for the win. He's a 5th year senior who misses wide open receivers frequently and his receivers bail him out on some of his off target throws as well.

CJP is still not there as a HC either. I think he can be, but he is still making big mistakes as well. The UGA game will be the marker on how the season will play out IMO.

As much as everybody on here hates Kirby, he handled the his current QB situation far better than CJP. You find the one who can get the job done consistently to win the game. Making great young men out of student athletes and winning games are not mutually exclusive concepts.

Velus was a huge get and will be an impact player the entire season.

Our secondary better settle in and figure some 'ish out or we'll be toast this season against better passing teams.

JG didn't turn the ball over, but threw under, behind, above, past, and over WR's and wasn't pressured when doing so, all in one game. Messed up a swing pass too. We couldn't sustain good offensive drives because he would make enough bad passes to stall it and we'd have to give it back... go look at the tape. Several key important 3rd or second downs to get the first or huge chunks was eliminated by one of his bad throws. We should have beaten them by 14+ points easily with a solid throwing QB.

WR's are going to get better every game, but are going to pull muscles in their back from contorting their bodies trying to catch JG's crappy passes...

O and D lines were pretty solid, but I want to know if Cade has a chance to play this year. Someone needs to make it official.

It’s game one in a weird year. I believe the secondary will get better, especially since we were missing a key player. We are basically playing LB’s in all new roles (Henry played last year but now calls the defense).

JG is JG, but frankly I was happy that the problem wasn’t mental. His decisions were fine. I won’t emphasize it anymore, but Chaney has to be just as good to help JG. Run a little more sometimes and be a little more creative. JG did miss Fant on the rollout but more of those type plays. I also would like to see Ty and Gray in together just as we did at one point with Kamara and Hurd.

i have been rewatching the game. While some are on here arguing QB play and rightfully so We are missing the biggest deficiency of the night. Fellas we missed Shamburger in a massive way. Slaughter played okay for a Frosh but damn was the middle and the slot wide open all night. After making slot receivers ghosts last year Shi took us to the woodshed. Shamburger is at minimum a 10 pt. Difference in the game.
We definitely don’t know who shi smith is if shamburger plays

I see everyone's giving their opinion of the game this morning. Watched it at a friend's house last night so didn't get home til late. Not sure what's all been said.

First impressions, I'm happy we won. Very happy. South Carolina played hard at home, so kudos to them for a good game. They're a raw team, but I think they've got the makings to upset someone this year, thankfully it wasn't us.

Now, about us. First things first, I think Pruitt should have gone for it on that fourth and 1 where we missed the FG. That's not hindsight, I was screaming at my friend's TV to go for it because I knew it was a bad spot for a FG. That was the only coaching decision, off the top of my head, that I really questioned.

JG didn't lose the game for us. That's a good thing. He made some god-awful inaccurate throws, but he didn't lose the game for us. But, to his credit, there were one or two throws I thought were on the money that the receivers just missed. Most of the incomplete passes, tho, were just bad passes. I did enjoy seeing him scramble some.

If Jeremy Banks is going to contribute to this team, he's going to have to control his temper. He obviously has a chip on his shoulder, but that does us no good if he can't control himself. Young man needs to make better decisions, in life and on the field.

Albright needs to spend the week practicing under pressure. He's a scholarship player. I get this was his first game, but he needs to earn that scholarship.

Overall, I don't think it was a bad first game. We saw lots of rust. Look around the league, most teams showed the same thing. We're not up to actual game speed yet, which is why we normally start off with gimme teams. Starting off with an SEC opponent is rough. But we won, and we should be really happy for that. Things will get better as players find their rhythm. Thankfully, we get Mizzou at home next week. No disrespect to Mizzou, but let's face it, they're not top tier SEC right now. It's another game to tune up before we face the real big boy competition of the SEC.

Guys and gals, I really think we're going to be okay. I'm still not sold on JG, and hopefully we do enough next week to see another QB take some snaps, but I think we'll be just fine.

Fingers-crossed.

Disagree. Credit where credit is due. Shi Smith is a good player, and they understandably designed ways to get the ball in his hands. Sham may have done a better job, but we still would have known all about Shi Smith.

My takeaways that stood out from game 1

1. Columbia is still a shithole
2. JG seems far more comfortable in the offense and did a much better job eliminating the big mistake. I think he gets better as the year progresses.
3. Upside on team looks promising. Fully healthy with all starters and a few more practices under their belt I think that game looks like a blow out.
4. This team has grit...you can just tell these kids are fighting for their coach. Its been a while since we have really had that consistently and the long term effects are evident. 7 in a row speaks volumes.

Can’t wait to open In Neyland next weekend...

They ran those slants over and over again until we committed to stopping them, and that’s when they hit the deep post to Smith for the TD.

Gotta give credit to Bobo and Smith, they wanted him involved and they found a good way to do that.

Year 3 and our football coach still can’t manage a clock worth a damn.

Complete malpractice to call a TO with 6 seconds left on a running play clock at the end of the game. Somebody better get his ass in gear or it’s going to cost us a game
Take a lap and do the math while you are running.

He's the best part of their offense. Easily so.

My only concern is how many times now have we banked on JG consistently improving over the course of the year only to get a wildcard at QB every game.

Didn’t that dude torch us last year? I know he had that one long touchdown to start the game.

You are correct. He had 11 catches for 156 on us last year but I am pretty sure he played on the outside that game. This one they had him on the inside most of the game. Dude seems to have killer games against us. He still has a good game but is not as dominant with Sham playing. They definitely picked on Slaughter but I do believe he is going to be a good player for us.

Key thing to remember IMO, we have had no tune up gimme games. There's a reason teams normally start off the season with a soft opponent. Jumping straight into an SEC game is no easy task, and I think we saw that around the conference yesterday. Lots of teaching moments from last night. Lots of coachable mistakes.

Did anyone else feel that we relied less on blitzing from the boundary last night? I made a comment before the Slaughter sack that it was odd not seeing a single corner blitz from Pruitt yet. Do we think we will see a shift to relying more on our 4 man rush this year?
