Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

Here’s the issue with filing a claim.... policies cover sudden bursting or rupturing of pipes that release water causing damage..... BUT.... a slow unnoticed leak that causes damage over time is not. If you’ve got water damage where the wood has rotted or it’s evident that the issue has been going on for some period of time..... insurance company will deny it

I feel almost the same way about insurance companies as I do lawyers and we all know where I place them on the scumbag continuum.

A 2500 kw generator would power my entire neighborhood. I'm guessing a 6500 gallon tank would only last a day or 2 on that size of generator.

I can't remember what size the backup diesel generators in nuclear plants are. As I recall they, evolved from marine generators - probably the incestuous relationship between ex-sub guys making their way into nuclear plants. I know they were huge and temperamental. That's often the way with equipment meant to run constantly being swapped to backup type use.

Wow, glad I decided to sit in here and be lazy for a while. Started hearing a popping noise and got up to investigate. My DeWalt charger decided to fry the battery - smoke but no fire. It's sitting out on concrete cooling its heels. I may change brands - that's twice, and their batteries are absurdly priced - and smell awful when overheated.

Speaking of absurdly priced batteries. I have an assortment of EGO electric tools - one blower at the warehouse and another at home, also a chain saw, an extension pruner and a weed whacker that all use the same type battery... one battery is around $150 and I've had 2 of them go out in the last couple of months.

I did too years ago, but after being in the business as long as I have I’ve figured out why policies are written in the manner they are. If they weren’t, they’d be so expensive no one could afford them. Profit margins are slim... much slimmer than you’d think, but they have such large volumes of money to work with .....a 3-5% margin could be $50 million

This battery kept popping off (like mini fireworks) even after I unplugged the charger. I was imagining a bunch of little lithium batteries going off like in the Tesla blowtorch.

Must have lost containment and getting air in contact with the lithium.

You know the Chinese have been running around the planet buying up the mines that produce the exotic stuff needed for electronics, and nobody seems to be interested in stopping what's looking like monopolistic behavior.

Yep, one cell probably overheated and caused others to expand and pop. Just glad the lithium in the batteries didn't decide to show how volatile the stuff can be. I thought at first some animal was trying to chew through the wall or floor.

The US has basically encouraged their aggressive expansionist strategy, through our disastrous economic policies which have fueled China's development into a global superpower (while wrecking our own manufacturing base and middle class) and the unwillingness to compete for access to strategic raw materials on the world stage.

Sorry if this is too political for this thread...

Pretty much amounted to manufacturing suicide. It's incredible how everybody ignores the other side of the economic equation - people without jobs eventually have no means to keep the economy rolling along. Companies shouldn't amount to welfare programs, but at some point you really have to recognize the symbiotic nature of production and consumption.

Not to mention how it undermines our national security.

Has to last 72 hours for a water plant in Florida (hurricane)... which is a little ridiculous since about 60 percent of the water that the plant produces is for irrigation. Who waters the grass during a hurricane anyways?

I was thinking about AM's thread for what doesn't fit here, there, or even over there. Too many things fall outside established threads. Worthwhile or not? Kind of a place where anyone or anything is accepted - as long as the discussion falls withing Freaks' Law.

AM's thread for misfits?

Sounds good to me.

Yeah if I lived in a rural area I’d have a whole house automatic backup. Living in surburbia I think it’s over kill. I think this is overkill too but after a 25 hour power outage two weeks ago which cost us some frozen food I said enough is enough. It’s only a matter of time before there is a major storm in North Texas where I’ll need emergency power for a couple of days so I’m gonna just do it. I’m doing the install myself so it’s around $1500 bucks in parts. I tried to figure out a way to put an AC compressor on the transfer switch but the compressor starting currents or locked rotor currents are just too much for an emergency power generator.
Have you looked at getting a kick start generator for that? Not sure the actual name, but a smaller generator just for that? I guess it only helps if the issue is the start up. But that would probably be another set of panels/switches.
