Countdown to Kickoff vs South Carolina

41 days........

Steve Chancey, #41, was a fullback from 1971-1973. More of a blocking back for Curt Watson and Haskel Stanback, Chancey was a capable runner as well. His best season was in ‘71, when he spelled an injured Stanback for portions of the season. He rushed for 388 yards and 3 touchdowns. For his career, he had 765 yards (4.2 avg) and 5 TDs and 16 receptions for 1 touchdown.

Shazzon Bradley, #40, was a four year letterman from 1988-1991 at middle linebacker. A rough childhood molded Shazzon into a hard nosed leader for the Vols. 237 tackles, 9 sacks, and 14 tackles for loss, were some of his accomplishments on the field. His interception vs Auburn in ‘89 was one of many big plays. Bradley was drafted in the 9th round by Green Bay, but was cut before the season began. He became a professional boxer, and retired with a 21-0 record.

He lost some teeth blocking a field goal I think.

Not the most popular, but former defense back, #38, Antonio Wardlow made two huge plays. Lettering in ‘06 and ‘’07, Wardlow interceptioned a Wisconsin paySs in the emzone to seal the Bowl win. He also blocked a punt and scored vs UGA in ‘06. His career was short, but finished with 15 career tackles. He was dismissed from the team for violating team rules

Still gave it a like, even though he was dismissed from the team. That win gave me something about which to give my wife's Cheesehead relatives a hard time. 😉

From 1971-1973, Bill Rudder did everything he could for the Vols. A great blocking back, he was also solid catching passes and running between the tackles. He even tossed a 21 yrd TD pass. He had three 100 yard rushing games, including 143 vs UCSB in ‘71, and scored in the ‘71 Liberty Bowl. He finished his career with 1,260 yards and 7 touchdowns, averaging over 5 yards a carry. Rudder would play two seasons in the WFL for Chicago and Birmingham.

I was at that '71 game vs UCSB. At that time UT had one game a year where area HS players could get in for free by wearing their game jerseys. So there I was sitting in the old North End Zone bleachers with my team mates from KCHS (I was a freshman center) proudly wearing my #51 Green & Gold. One of the guys on that team was Steve Adkins who was out there with the Vols the next year. Our starting right tackle, John Brink, went on to play for Navy.

Good times and good friends.

The whole bleacher section was a kaleidoscope of colors from the different area teams that day.

35 days.......

Ellix Wilson, #35, was a linebacker from 2004-2008. Wilson patiently waited his turn for playing time, playing mainly special teams his first couple of years and having a medical redshirt. Even then, he made big plays. He had 3 sacks and a blocked punt vs Georgia in 2007, while backing up J. Mayo. He finally got his chance to start in 2008. He set the tone with 13 tackles vs UCLA. He finished his senior season with 89 tackles, a sack and an interception. For his career, he had 139 total tackles.

34 days......

James Berry, #34, played tailback and fullback from 1978-1981. In a word, Berry was versatile. He could run inside, outside, block, and had great hands. For his career, Berry had 1,721 yards rushing, 34 receptions, and 19 total touchdowns. Most people don’t know, or remember, how good he was. But, they do know his biggest contribution to UT.......his son Eric. :D

Gary Moore, #33, lettered as a running back in ‘77,’78, and ‘79. During those three seasons, Moore only rushed for 417 yards, as he was stuck behind Kelsey Finch, Hubert Simpson, and James Berry on the depth chart. Where Moore made his main contribution, was as a kickoff returner. In ‘77, he was the 4th ranked returner in the NCAA and then averaged 25.7 yards a return in in 1978. In all, 41 returns for 996 yards (24.3 yard avg) and 1 touchdown. His 98 yard opening kickoff return vs Auburn in 1979, is still one of my favorite moments I witnessed as a kid!

A real hero, Bill Nowling #32, started every game at fullback from 1940-1942. He helped the Vols to a piece of the ‘40 national championship and two Sugar Bowl appearances. After graduation, he was commissioned infantry second lieutenant in 1943. In August, 1944, Nowling was killed in action leading his troops in France.

I believe he was the last Vol Football player to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated.
