”Because unjust rules prevent the 98% of college football and basketball players who won’t go pro from capitalizing economically on what would otherwise be the most valuable years of our lives...”

The connotations here. Quite the pessimistic view of life after sports. Absolutely no respect for a college degree. Completely ignorant to the amount of debt their fellow classmates are entering the job market with.

How much do they really think they are worth?!? There are 10s of 1000s of other high schoolers who would love to take their place.

Ahhh yes, be grateful that you will have long lasting health effects for the rest of your life, your degree is worth less than even 10 years ago (seriously a college degree is worth as much as a high school diploma now), you won't be allowed to work or have a job to pay for anything, your time isn't your own even during times other students who get paid to work have off, and let's forget about the fact that you may not even want that degree in the first place, but there's no tryouts for the NFL until you go to college.

Just let them pay taxes and make what they want. These people have been paying to play football practically their entire lives, paying specialized coaches, paying for camps, traveling on their own dime, transferring into the right high schools for just the chance at a scholarship. It's not like Joe Bob down the street just showed up for tryouts one day and Pruitt had an extra scholarship ready to hand out. 100 years ago 20 year olds were making 5000 a year and supporting their wife and kids. You didn't make that 20 year old get a "free" apprenticeship for the 4 best years of his life, you paid him for the work he did.

Until people are willing to pay the market rate for true American services like football tickets, wages will always stay down. I'll pay double for football tickets because it's worth it to me, and I'll ask my job to pay me what I'm worth or go somewhere else.
Wether they like it or not they should not get paid. Those degrees they throw away because they don't put time and effort in to them are worh thousands of dollars. Also the gear, food, travel, access to doctors and trainers, and everything else these schools pary for. Its a joke they want more regular students would kill to have access to half the stuff these athletes do. The sense of entitlement and the victimhood status is pathetic.
Secondly fan attendance keeps going down with prices as they are. If prices keep going up attendance will keep falling. Making football less revenue.
Lastly these athletes are shooting themselves in the foot with all of these political statements they are making, its going to hurt them by pissing off a portion of fans which lowers revenue again, more than it helps them.

All this real life stuff that happens to other demographics, has @Bassmaster_Vol, @Catbone and the several other posters showing their true colors...it’s pathetic

But also good...When the grass is cut, the snakes will show🦉
Please continue. Care to expand or will you hide behind thinly veiled insults?

I retired for about six months and almost went crazy. Went back to work for a while and positioned it into a part time gig where I can do 95% on line. That lets me be mobile. Have a plan to keep you mind and body busy, even if it is nothing but charity work. I firmly believe staying productive in some way will help you live longer.
That's amazing. I retired when I turned 62, 10 years ago, and have never looked back. I play golf almost every day and I love it. You couldn't get me to go back to the rat race. I guess everyone is different when it comes to staying busy in retirement.

This is representative of what is wrong with America today. IT IS ALL POLITICS

So with his view, it is ok to kill people if he agrees with what they are doing. You have to either say live life and see what happens or shut EVERYTHING down and see what happens. Regardless the choice, people die. What a novel thought. Maybe we should stop trying to find a way for us to never die because it is not going to happen.

One thing is clear, these athletes have no comprehension of business. 50% of revenue lol...

Even if the kids get any of these demands, the schools won't be paying for it. They will still attempt to operate with profits. We will pay for their additional benefits. It's fans that drive the sport just as much if not more than the athletes. You will see an increase in TV subscription costs, merchandise costs, ticket costs, hot dogs, etc. Nothing in this world is free. It is paid for by someone. In this scenario, it is the fans that will pay for it. Increasing the costs for fans will only create less fans, and therefor increased costs again. It's a downward spiral from here.

The fact the kids don't appreciate the opportunity they are being given is insulting. Entitlement is a disease that needs eradicating.
My take on all these athletes making demands and protesting is this. Fans do drive a large portion of revenue but TV contracts provide the largest amount of dollars. When fans get fed up with all that's going on and decide to boycott the games-----pro athletes will wake up when they see empty seats because their money could very well dry up. Try getting a real job that pays millions every year when fans speak up.

Wolken is a turd but he’s not wrong about this. If positive cases ravage a college campus it’s hard to justify a game for supposed amateur athletes.

But it is ok to protest without social distancing and infect people. It needs to be one or the other. Make a decision but can't be in the middle on this. Either large gatherings with social distancing and protocols are ok or they are not.

My kids played sports because they loved it. We paid all of that because they loved it. When they stopped loving it they stopped playing. And if that's the best 4 years of your life, you're doing it wrong. Like I said yesterday just make a minor league with a few teams. The very few that then get to play can pay for their own college if they want to go. I'll pay about as much attention to that Tennessee team as I do the Titans or any other professional team. There are other things to do..... In the meantime GB🍊!

Your entire argument is null and void once you pull this out.

Who gives a rats azz what regular students would do. Those regular students don’t have the skill/talent to do what the athletes do. So that argument makes no sense whatsoever.

Also, attendance may be going down (no idea I haven’t researched it) but I’m pretty sure tv viewership, thus TV contracts, are growing. I’ve yet to see a conference sign a tv contract for less money than their previous contract. I’ve yet to see a coach’s salary go down when they sign an extension. There is plenty of money.

If you’re mad bc they’re making statements, vote with your wallet. Don’t attend, don’t watch. I’m gonna doubt it makes a huge impact on revenue but I guess we’ll see if it continues and teams/schools stop allowing it. Also, I don’t think the athletes care about your feelings. They’re expressing their views and opinions and they’re free to do so, just as you are.

That being said, the pac-12 player demands aren’t realistic. Can’t have a 50-50 split and paying it out across the sports based on the revenue those sports generate doesn’t make sense bc most sports lose money.

However, athletes should definitely be able to get paid somehow. Without them, you don’t watch. Or are you gonna tune in to watch regular students play football against other regular students on Saturdays?

Lastly, gonna take a wild guess and say you weren’t a D-1 athlete and actually have zero clue to the amount of time commitment and expectation that comes along with being in that position. Especially for football bc it’s not only the most physically demanding but also the revenue generator for most athletic departments.

As we discuss yesterday, I’m not opposed to your idea of having a league where they can get paid. Probably the easiest solution. But schools will start paying players quicker than a hiccup if players have an option to go play somewhere else.

Not worth my time arguing with you.

College football leans to the right pretty hard. Make it woke and political, and it will end up costing those who benefit the most.

It isn't a welcome truth, but IQ is a great predictor of earning potential. Football/sports is a great place for those with physical gifts to stand out in a world increasingly biased toward those with mental gifts. Talking that away further tilts the field in the wrong direction.
