I disagree. We do ignore the contributions of slaves. Who was responsible for filling northern textile mills with cotton? Banks across the country received tremendous amounts of cash from wealthy southern land owners and northern manufacturing owners. In fact, up until the civil war a rather large percentage of the world's cotton was owed to slavery. Around the time of the civil war, more than 80% of the US exports were agrarian in nature. To say that slavery is a footnote is greatly underestimating its importance.

I think what is lost on you and Huff is that myself and the vast majority of posters in this thread are VERY aware of a prominent fact in that great article posted about native Americans " most Natives didn't own black slaves...but then again, neither did most whites who lived in Mississippi. Slaves were very expensive and owning a slave was a sign of status."

I feel like I need to get that printed on Tshirts and pass them out to every elementary student in this country. I feel like you white guilt liberals need to hear it about 15x a damn day until you get it.

Check this out: my family was never rich Plantation owners. Never. Ever. Can trace my ancestors back hundreds of years. Never owned a single damn slave. Ever. In fact, neither did the ancestors of 95% of white Americans ...probably more.

I feel absolutely ZERO GUILT ABOUT SLAVERY because I have never owned a slave. My family never owned slaves. My great grandfather...oldest relative I ever met...didnt know anybody who owned slaves.

I have no reason to feel any guilt. NEITHER DO YOU...BUT YOU DO YOU. If I am supposed to feel guilty just because my skin color is (mostly) the same as those who owned slaves here in the US...then EVERY black person, like my 2 sisters, should feel guilty because of all the black Africans that SOLD their own people into slavery.

Right? Doesnt that sound really damn stupid??? Yes. It does. Thats how stupid it is for a white person in 2020 whose family never had the first damn thing to do with slavery to SOMEHOW feel GUILTY about people they never met owning other people that they never met. NEVER MET.

white guilt is a disease like liberalism and communism that affects the minds of FOOLS. ONLY FOOLS.

I never owned anyone. F$%k you if you thinki should owe anyone an apology or anything else. Be happy that I tolerate the BLATANT racism that is "affirmative action " " minority scholarships" and anything else that puts MY INNOCENT KIDS at a competitive disadvantage just because of the color of their skin and SOMEONE ELSES GUILT OVER OTHER PEOPLES SINS.

I take responsibility for my actions. Mine and mine alone. F#$k anyone who tries to make me take responsibility for anyone elses just because they had roughly the same skin tone as me. THEY are the racists.

So tired of this bullcrap. Whiny azz guilt stricken morons drive me insane. My kids dont owe you or anyone else a damn thing except common courtesy. Period.

Tired of this racist bullsheit. Sick and tired. I came from nothing, my whole family did on both sides. We do not owe anyone a damn thing. If a man cannot make it in this country it is nobodies fault but HIS. Period.

I've seen Cotton on tv say some odd things, but this takes the cake. And the funny thing is, he always tries to sound intellectual and thoughtful. I don't think so.
It's taken out of context. That entire statement was prefaced with

In the interview, Cotton said the role of slavery can’t be overlooked.

Your fellow lawyer just left that part out. To me it completely changes what y'all are suggesting. He's highlighting the role slavery played in American history. Not trying to say it was needed or whatever word games you're trying to play. If the Founding Fathers said that statement, it's acknowledging slavery played a big part of America's history.

In the interview, Cotton said the role of slavery can’t be overlooked.

“We have to study the history of slavery and its role and impact on the development of our country because otherwise we can’t understand our country. As the Founding Fathers said, it was the necessary evil upon which the union was built, but the union was built in a way, as Lincoln said, to put slavery on the course to its ultimate extinction,” he said.

Instead of portraying America as “an irredeemably corrupt, rotten and racist country,” the nation should be viewed “as an imperfect and flawed land, but the greatest and noblest country in the history of mankind,” Cotton said.

You are privileged due to being white in America. No matter how hard you had to work a black person starting from the same spot has less opportunity and has to work harder to get to the same place. That is a fact. Crying won't change it.

A buddy of mine went to law school with him. He does not think highly of Mr. Cotton's mental acuity.

Without knowing the other side that's a whole lot of supposition.

I don't feel a bit of guilt and you are presumptuous to assume I do. I don't know if any of my relatives owned slaves and I don't care. What I think that most of you miss is the undeniable fact that being white in America has been an advantage since before its formation. It is still an advantage to be white when it comes to education, finding a job, staying out of prison, finding housing, dealing with the police etc.

By way of example, blacks were prevented from building wealth when they returned home from WWII. White soldiers got the GI Bill with mortgages and schooling attached. Black vets got to rent and get low paying jobs. Though statistics seem to indicated that blacks and whites commit crimes at comparable rates, blacks are more likely to be incarcerated. The difference in coke and crack sentencing they faced. The incarceration issues have taken away a couple of generations worth of parents from black family units that whites didn't deal with.

This is not all about owning slaves. I have taken full advantage of what I have been given, but I can recognize that I had a head start in the race of life.

My goodness, you all. Can we not have people maybe say something that may simply awkwardly phrased, but not necessarily with malice or I'll intent? You are not making racial tensions any better by making a mountain out of mole hills like this. Makes my head hurt.

So are you willing to give it all back since you were "privileged"? What about your kids, should they fall to the bottom? People like you amaze me, you feel all grandiose after you're "comfortable" but you would have bitched and raised hell if you were held back for a black to take your place in college or any other endeavor in your life.

The whole argument about race making a difference starts with the assumption that white people never face any themselves.

I have personally been rejected for education and housing here in Atlanta based on my skin color. Then back in college I was rejected from a job because I was white as well.

The education was a needs based program which at the time I fell under. I was rejected because it was minority only, despite all the advertising simply being about income.

The housing didnt advertise that they were black only but the lady at the front desk was kind enough to let me know they dont rent "to people like me".

The job was an affirmative action hire where they hired someone they knew wasnt qualified while I was. I was openly told I didnt get the job because I was white.

Going further you can find plenty of minority businesses here in Atlanta that will not hire a white person at all. They can express that and society rewards them with favorable government deals. My firm has worked with one of those companies and they flat out told us they dont do work. They are on the team to fulfill that quota from the city. And their contract reflects that they are not expected to do anything but be a physical presence in the meetings and still get paid like they did work.

Pretending like it's all roses for all whites is dishonest. And pretending like there are no privileged black people out there is the same.

And? It was founded as a White country. White people enjoy these privileges in the countries they create.

You've had a head start for thousands of years. Don't beat yourself up over having progressive ancestors.

Oh yeah, blacks and Whites don't commit crimes at comparable rates. In what parallel universe are you getting your statistics?

It's awful that you were denied housing or a job opportunity due to your race. This being said...

Just curious...were any of your ancestors plucked from their families in a different country, crammed onto filthy, disease-infested ships like sardines, shipped to an unknown location, and forced to endure generations of physical labor while frequently being beaten mercilessly and enduring sub-human living conditions?

Mine ancestors were not, and therefore, I don't pretend to understand the plight of the black man or woman in our society.

Dang. What ancestors are yours that didnt have slavery? Are you like an Eskimo?

Oh..and remember. black people captured and sold black people, mostly for copper frying pans and seashells. The slavery market was literally created by blacks and fueled by blacks. If they didn't do it the transatlantic slave trade would not have ever been a thing.

Close. We trace our family back to when England shipped their convicts over here for labor.

My ancestors were not slaves in this country and, therefore, for me to pretend to know what racism feels like is laughable.
Generalize about slavery all you want to make yourself feel better.

You white guilt people amaze me.

Btw...each of you owe me $100. My truck was broken into and all my tools stolen by a couple white guys a few years back. I am pretty sure they were white because they also stole all my CDs ( Rock music mostly) a Carhardt work coat and a $200 pair of camouflage work boots. Could have been a couple black guys...but my life experience tells me that there's a 99% chance the only people who would listen to/wear those things are white folks.

Since all you whiny, apparently have more money than you need, white guilt liberals seem intent on paying the perceived "debts" of all white people that you've never met....in order to remain logically consistent and not be hypocrites or FOS you EACH need to pay me $100 bucks so we can be square over all the tools that I need to feed my family being stolen from me.

Thanks in advance for your generosity...I will be quite content with my new tools as well as seeing that yall arent just batsheit crazy...you guys seriously intend to "right all past wrongs" of the evil white man oppressor.

* for gift cards please get Lowes or just Visa....Home Depot is for women and men who dont know what they want and have lots of free time to dick around in the cluttered, disorganized stores. TIA...

Now that you're "comfortable" sure. You're a hypocrite and you would never give up your privilege.

I'm the guy that pays more in taxes than most and would pay more to ensure all Americans had basic health insurance. But yeah, I'm the one not willing to put up.

What, you think you're the only victim of theft perpetrated by a white person?

Carry on with your racist rant.

Well said. The epitome of apex fallacy. Marxism is a house of cards that falls apart without apex fallacy.
