Brandon Davis transferring

If Gooden hadn’t effed up, would he have a scholarship/roster spot? Who would it have come from? The answer is from multiple others that are leaving. Prediction is Solon Page, Ollie Lane, Kingston Harris and Riley Locklear. Others can add to that. You’re acting like someone that will leave slides into Gooden’s spot...no. Embrace linear thinking.

You consistently don't understand how the scholarship roster works. Let me explain it again.

The players that had an athletic scholarship last year remain on scholarship until they graduate, leave the program or are dismissed. So, yes, until his dismissal, Gooden had a spot. It didn't have to come from anyone.

To add a new player, be it a freshman, a transfer or any other player, someone from last year's 85 has to leave. Here's the progression of how the numbers worked out in real time from the end of the season to the present:

-8 scholarship seniors graduated. Jordan Murphy, Jacquez Jones, Jerrod Means, Malik Gray, Ryan Johnson, Marcus Tatum, Will Ignont, Shannon Reid, Joe Doyle and Terrell Bailey transferred. Jeremy Banks was dismissed last fall and was removed from the squad list submitted to the NCAA before spring practice. That's 19 departures.

So at that point, you're at 66.

- Prior to the spring, they added Cade Mays and Velus Jones as scholarship transfers. Both were on the squad list for spring practice, so now we're at 68.

- Cooper Mays, Harrison Bailey, Jimmy Holiday and Dominic Bailey were early enrolles and were on the squad list for spring practice, so now we're at 72.

- This month, Tim Jordan and Emmitt Gooden were dismissed. Brandon Davis announced his transfer today. So that's back down to 69.

- Tennessee signed 23 in the 2021 recruiting class. As I mentioned, four already enrolled. That means you have 19 more scholarship players, most of whom are enrolled in summer online classes and working out on campus, that you're obligated to have spots for August 1st. That's 88 before Banks, 89 if you're including him.

- Two of the walk-ons that were placed on one-year scholarships last fall were informed at the end of spring semester that they weren't being renewed, which is allowed. I'm not at liberty to say who they are. That's 86 without Banks, 87 with him.

You can list guys that you think are "probable" to leave and open up those last two spots, but I know for a fact two of the guys you listed will be on the team this fall. I know the other two aren't planning on going anywhere. But somewhere on the roster, two guys have to move on to have the ability to add Banks and/or not have to defer a member of the signing class to next year.

He'll redshirt, and redshirts still count against the 85. The only way a player with an injury doesn't count against the limit is if they suffer a career-ending injury. As of now, Pope plans to return, so he is not being moved to a medical scholarship.
We will see, but I expect him to end up on a medical scholarship after his surgery. Back injuries aren't anything to play with

He already redshirted. I think his redshirt was standard and not medically related (could be wrong), the next season was missed due to injury. If so, he’s an unlikely candidate for a 6th year waiver and that would be in effect “career ending” as it applies to college. Similar to Darrin Kirkland. It’s not bound by any future attempts of playing in the NFL.

It doesn't matter if it's unlikely in your eyes or not, if he intends on applying for the medical hardship waiver for a 6th year at Tennessee or anywhere else, he has to remain on the roster and cannot be placed on a medical scholarship. UT is, at this point, supporting him in that.

The ones that haven’t left YET? What happens if they DON’T? Because they will...it always works out because coaches and admin know what they’re doing in that department...even in the Dooley and Butch years. And while we’re doling out FACTS? There’s no way you can KNOW for said fact that two guys I’ve speculated will be on the roster this fall. You’re taking on superpowers that you didn’t deliver on with Justin Martin. Sorry...you’re consigned to a degree of higher percentage GUESSING than us mere schlubs who grace this message board with you.

Tell it to the ghosts of Jerry Colquitt. Marcus Jackson et al. It MATTERED that their first redshirts weren’t medically related in regards to applying for a 6th year. Unless special dispensation is allowed for the Covid pandemic, his career’s over if that first redshirt wasn’t medically related...and that would give them the option to place him on a medical scholarship. Which they will.

Things have changed and the NCAA has been a lot more liberal with the sixth year, even if the first redshirt year was for performance reasons and not due to injury. In just the last year, Lucas Johnson and David Curry at Georgia Tech, T.J. Green at Northwestern, Richard Moore at SMU, Corey Dauphine at Tulane, and Dylan Powell, a grad transfer to Indiana from Stanford got 6th years even though only one of their lost years were due to injury. If you extend it to other sports, I can give you an even longer list.

I think people with tacky thoughts about Brandon Davis transferring should keep such thoughts to themselves. Y’all are typing out the quiet part again. Let’s treat him with respect as a) the kid was classy in announcing his transfer, b) a football team is made up of players up and down the depth chart and not everyone is a starter or star and there’s nothing wrong with that and is in fact necessary for the team, c) earning a football scholarship from UT and sticking is an accomplishment most people will never get near, d) he’s a kid, e) his dreams didn’t pan out at UT even though he went through workouts, practices, etc., and that’s sad to me, and f) this has to be hard for him as he’s leaving his friends and what he has known for college at UT for the unknown. I, for one, wish him well and thank him for his efforts for UT while he was here.

Well with UT I’ll believe it when I see it. We have a grand total of...Brandon Kennedy on that docket. And that was no shoo-in. My prediction remains that they’ll pay lip service before eventually medically retiring him in 12 days.

Not smart enough to join the debate between you and DP but can the recent Covid" sit out this year" deal affect Pope?

Lol or blue font. Just kidding around with you Special. I enjoy your posts and wouldn’t want to hinder you in the future. As if me or anyone else could.

No harm. No foul.
If I couldn't stand the heat, I wouldn't be on this site.
I usually deserve any criticism that comes my way, serious or otherwise.

Everything is falling apart...
I'm just wondering if some of these guys transferring have found they are probably too far down the depth chart and/or have been encouraged by coaches to look elsewhere for playing time, which makes room for higher profile recruits. Just curious. I know transfers always occur but it just appears that is what is happening.

The general sentiment of this post simply cannot be emphasized enough and I wish posters (including myself) kept it more to the fore of their mind before posting.

Who? No offense, but I’m on here daily, watch all games, most multiple times, never heard of this guy.
I hope whoever he is making a good choice for himself.
No interviews please
He was the one that got shot in the leg just before covid19 happened.

With two herniated discs repaired in his back, I'm not even sure he should play football again.

For what it's worth, I agree 100%. But he intends on coming back and UT is supporting him on it, so that's where they are right now. I obviously haven't seen his medicals and I'm certainly not a doctor, but I think I would go ahead to my chosen non-football career.

At this point, players that sit out this year for COVID fears keep their scholarships, but only retain the year of eligibility if they haven't previously redshirted (for any reason). I have no idea if that will change, but there does not seem to be momentum for granting anything beyond the standard redshirt.

I’ve made a few slow witted responses to others and they were either playing along and got me rattled or were honestly taken back by a comment. I’ve never noticed you to be mean spirited and I appreciate that.
