Interesting. Do you have any numbers on that?

It's hard to find exact amounts. There was one study (1) that was in JAMA that showed that median PEEP was 14!! and that 89% of people were on > 50% FiO2. Median P/F ratios have been anywhere from 132-164 (2, 3). I am involved in a clinical trial and our ventilated cohort has been around 14/70%. Average ventilator days is harder to determine. But it's likely > 2 weeks in people who don't die. The Seattle paper from NEJM says the average ventilator time was 10 days but that's because a large part of their cohort died with an average ventilator time of like 6-7 days which drove down the numbers.

It’s not monocausal. It’s protests, it’s reopening too soon, it’s bars, it’s people refusing to wear a mask. This country has utterly failed when faced with a monumental problem.
Health officials who said in April that masks dont do anything (consistent with research with the flu) then changing to masks being needed and admitting they intentionally misled the public....

...Protests being not just condoned but joined by politicians and health officials

That led to people seeing the bullsh*t one way or the other and becoming more relaxed on top of the spread during protests

Here we are. The politicians, media and medical officials failed this country by being all over the map, no consistency and being contradictory multiple times. Not the people. Leaders went full dumbass as a gift to China. They earned the refusals in this country. Not the other way around.

Reopening isnt even on the main list and shutting down has done a significant amount of damage.

sounds like you work in healthcare.... give us a true/honest profile of these folks highlighted--- Are they young/middle aged/usually healthy people, or are most already high risk, over 60, pre-existing conditions?

I've seen it all. Most people have at least one pre-existing condition of HTN, DM, or obesity (BMI > 30). I'd say most patients are between 50-70 just because that's the highest age range. I've seen 20 year olds die. It's so damn sad. I've seen people be on the ventilator for 30 days but make it through after fighting like hell. It's an awful disease. The people who get sick, get really ****ing sick.

There is no clear answer . All I know is

F CHINA

It’s amazing how selective Covid is. If you go to a football game, you hate people and you’re not a Christian. You might kill grandma!

But covid knows when people are protesting and, because it’s such a good cause, it stays away. Thank you medical professionals

This is not a health crisis.

It’s a healthcare, at least perceived, crisis. Medical professionals, in their own right, are ethically obligated to protect health and medicinally heal. They perceive a threat. And that’s okay.

Our elected officials have peed down their collective leg. Have taken it too far IMO. They have sounded so irrational and mentally bankrupt through all of this. Useful idiots I suppose. Not all. But most.

It is terribly unfortunate about the messaging on masks initially. But leaving the politics out of it, just follow the data and the science. Masks reduce transmission.

“The people” come across as remarkably ignorant and easily led about in this telling.

Then a person wearing a mask at a 100k game then continuously wearing that mask when out in public, if they feel healthy and others wearing a mask should be perfectly acceptable, no?

.

Yes!

Call what you want. So thousands of people in one area shouting and screaming didn't have any effect on spike? seriously?
I think it absolutely had an effect. I think it also had secondary effects because the hypocrisy of our “leaders” condoning those protests convinced people this wasn’t a serious problem and they could just go about their lives. We have failed at every level.

How are they supposed to know? They arent virologists. Common sense says the CDCs study on the flu is referencable in this and suggest they are meaningless. The data that we can reference to is reported by these officials and are not accurate. So we are left with our own experience... everything is normal in my community as far as I can see. so 🤷‍♂️

100k people who are yelling and not distancing is not a good idea even with masks. Masks reduce risk, not eliminate it. Especially when people are in the bathrooms, stairwells, etc.

100k people isn’t going to happen.

Those people accept the risks. What happens there is inconsequential. If they help as much as is suggested, what's the difference when they go back to the community still feeling healthy and the community is still taking their precautions of social distancing and masks?

My community FWIW is a hotspot. My older brother is an ER doc in central FL and he is just inundated with patients. He’s lost people in their 20s and 30s. I know these things are coloring my perceptions and that I am not a neutral party.

But I’m just so disappointed on so many levels. I don’t understand how Europe can have this largely under control (for now) while we’re doing whatever it is we’re doing. What has gone so wrong here?

Hey seeing that we do have several SR DL's, do you think they will try and take two or three more in this class?
We’ve already got 3 DL committed and are still swinging at Page and TID, though seems like running second for both. Think we’ll take at least 3 or 4 total even if we miss on those 2. Could see some roster numbers change there as kids add weight too, guys like Eason or Baron could add some weight and play more with their hand in the dirt. DT is gonna be the biggest question mark with an opportunity for young guys time step up, lots of unproven but promising youth there.

We have 48 contiguous states all doing their own thing. We had massive nationwide protests for 2 weeks that were praised by the same political leaders and media outlets that days prior were shaming people for leaving their homes. And in general, we as Americans don't like being told what to do. The inconsistency on the mask messaging also didn't help.

There are a lot of factors at play here. I think the protests did the most damage, not necessarily from a "they spread the virus" angle (although they assuredly did), but because they seemed to reinforce the idea that COVID is overblown. I guess at the end of the day, the media and politicians value being woke over saving lives.
