CDC calls on Americans to wear masks to prevent COVID-19 spread
JAMA editorial reviews latest science, while case study shows masks prevented COVID

Americans are increasingly adopting the use of cloth face masks to slow the spread of COVID-19, and the latest science may convince even more to do so.

In an editorial published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), CDC reviewed the latest science and affirms that cloth face coverings are a critical tool in the fight against COVID-19 that could reduce the spread of the disease, particularly when used universally within communities. There is increasing evidence that cloth face coverings help prevent people who have COVID-19 from spreading the virus to others.

“We are not defenseless against COVID-19,” said CDC Director Dr. Robert R. Redfield. “Cloth face coverings are one of the most powerful weapons we have to slow and stop the spread of the virus – particularly when used universally within a community setting. All Americans have a responsibility to protect themselves, their families, and their communities.”

This review included two case studies out today, one from JAMA, showing that adherence to universal masking policies reduced SARS-CoV-2 transmission within a Boston hospital system, and one from CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), showing that wearing a mask prevented the spread of infection from two hair stylists to their customers in Missouri.

As for the demographic that isn't wearing masks, they'd fall under the category "stupid" and/or "inconsiderate".

Do you think people would be more receptive to the government and its agencies if they would have took a different approach? If I were testing people for covid. I would find out if they were wearing a mask or not and then I would have actual data that showed the efficacy of the mask.

The 1918 Flu killed 500 million people worldwide and almost 700K in the U.S. We aren't even going to sniff those numbers without some serious manipulation of the data.

This is a new virus that makes some people sick some of the time and is one of any number of things that kill old and susceptible people. If it were killing all kind of people in droves then you have a point. But the simple truth is it isn't. It isn't even taxing the hospital system, not even in NY. The MSM and fear peddlers should be ashamed of themselves here.
That was over 3 years.....this has been going on 5 months? Only if we surpass those numbers will this be bad?

If the fear wear your mask people believe the masks are so great, if you are wearing a mask and I am not why does that bother you?

Yeah, I mean I have to agree with you... requiring citizens to (GASP!) wear a mask in public during a global pandemic is absolutely CRAZY!!!

The next thing you know, states will mandate that we have to wear seatbelts! Or even worse, make it illegal to drink and drive!!!

HOW DARE THEY!?!?

PLEASE DON'T LET OUR RIGHTS BE TRAMPLED BY FASCIST DEMOCRATS!

Show 'em that our rights are more important than anyone else's! Get out there, go to Walmart, don't wear a mask, and start sneezing. Sneeze like your life (and more importantly, our rights) depend on it, man!

I’ve decided to take the other approach, you guys on the left have convinced me that we need to defund the police . No police means no courts , no courts means I don’t have to have a license to carry , to drive to operate anything , no license plates , no permits . The money saved will be worth it since I don’t every require the police for anything . Oh yeah and I won’t be wearing a mask , or a seat belt 😊

No, that's just what you have been screeching because you bought into the politics from that side. The Open the economy up, it's not that bad, because we need to eat out, gather in larger groups, not social distance, and not wear a mask side.
You think people wanted the economy opened up so they could eat out and gather in large groups? That's moronic. People wanted the economy opened up so they could go back to work. Life didn't stop because the government decided to shut things down and neither did bills. People need to make money so they can afford to live. Food, rent, utilities, none of these things suddenly became free. Not everyone was in a position to work from home. That's why people wanted everything to reopen. It had nothing to do with the reasons you listed.

I’m a random guy on a message board discussing what we are seeing..... Do you not expect more from the medical experts than random people on a message board.....
The medical experts are giving me better information than Trump or any random guy on a message board. The thing about expertise is it takes time and just like any virus the experts have to analyze the best available data to contain, control, and treat the virus. The data gets better over time.

This doesn't even match pandemic label anymore. It needs to be downgraded.

It killed 1 in 36. We arent ever going to approach that territory. Not close.

Oh well, his arbitrary number doesnt match your arbitrary number
The mortality rate of the Spanish Flu was about 2.5%....the mortality rate as it stands right now is 3.9%. Unfortunately there has been so much mud thrown into the water, no one even trust the numbers.

What I gather from this forum, everyone seems to be doing OK financially. I don't hear people saying "I need a job" it's "open the economy".

We know at this point what it does and how it operates. Absolutely we do. Hell, we are close to a vaccine.

Please post any data from those states that show someone who needs a hospital bed isn’t getting one. There hasn’t been a single death because somebody couldn’t get care.

Viruses mutate? No kidding. The Flu does every year. So what. It hasn’t yet, and if it does, then we can shutdown. Until then, again, wtf are we doing here?

Heh. Oh, really?

Questions for you then:

(1) Does contracting CV-19 confer future immunity to it? If yes, for how long?;
(2) Does CV-19 cause any LT effects on those who survive infection? Asymptomatic patients?;
(3) Is herd immunity possible?;
(4) Are we really "close to a vaccine" if it hasn't even entered Phase 3 clinical trials (Moderna's candidate);
(5) How many vaccines (or any products, for that matter) has Moderna had approved by the FDA to date?;
(6) If a company does pass its Phase 3 trials for a vaccine, when would widespread inoculation be available in the US?; and
(7) What percentage of Americans have indicated they do NOT intend to take a vaccine, even if one becomes available? How might that affect the pandemic?

I definitely don’t trust trump or any politician on this issue...... I have no issue with changing views as you go..... I do have an issue with manipulated data not painting a true picture of that is going on ...... you must not be around many medical professionals bc I have been around several that I wouldn’t trust with a paper cut...... it’s ok to question them as well.
