The Atlanta Braves

Long been a Mitch Albom guy

Never really listened to Stephen Jackson during all of this but he lost any credibility he had when supporting DeSean’s comments, which were absolutely sad and ridiculous. Jackson only getting a fine was a joke.

Gretzky is obviously the greatest, but a lot of hockey people I’ve listened to/follow make the argument Mario was more talented. Which might be true. He was stupid good
He was the man, but his career +/- is 114 and WG’s is 520. Cant even compare them. Wayne was an alien.

I would sure as hell hope nobody finds the term "brave" offensive.

Well the name Brave comes from the actual tribe. I don’t really have an issue with the Brave name or naming of actual tribes. I would imagine the tomahawk will be gone soon though.

So Braves was an actual tribe name and not a nickname for them? Either way it shouldn't be offensive. Tomahawks aren't offensive.

Playing a regular season game next Friday

YOUR MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES are in action the following Friday and since all y’all SCRUB teams are not in Orlando I expect full thread adoption

I’m not aware of any “Braves” tribe, I always just thought it was another generic name for Native American warriors.

Unlike Redskins, which is just an outright racial slur, I don’t think people really find team names like Braves, Indians, Seminoles, etc. or their symbols like tomahawks to be offensive in and of themselves. What I think some people do find off putting is for this country to have spent a century or more effectively committing genocide against a group of people and then to turn around and appropriate their culture (or some caricature of it) for profit. I’m not saying all the Native American names need to go, but I also don’t understand why some people get so upset about at least having an honest discussion as to whether something that was “acceptable” 75-100 years remains so in 2020.

I was incorrect. The term Brave originated in the 19th century and was a term to call Native American warriors. So it wasn’t an actual tribe.

Outside of the redskins, I just don’t get it. Where do you draw the line? Rename the Indians, Braves, Chiefs, Warriors, Celtics, Yankees, Cowboys... when does PETA show up and we drop all the animal names?

I agree. Unless we are just not gonna use people groups and people as names/mascots. Because then we got a lot of work to do. If we go that route (not arguing that we should or shouldn’t).
