A Triumph at Mount Rushmore
If nothing else, President Donald Trump’s July Fourth speech at Mount Rushmore clarified the battle lines of our culture war.
The New York Times called the speech “dark and divisive,” while an Associated Press headline declared, “Trump pushes racial division.” A Washington Post story said the speech “crystallized” the president’s “unyielding push to preserve Confederate symbols and the legacy of white domination.”
To be clear — and despite all of this — the media and the Left didn’t freak out about a speech extolling the valor of Robert E. Lee, the statesmanship of Jefferson Davis, or the prowess of Nathan Bedford Forrest. They didn’t scorn a speech pining for Antebellum America or expressing ambiguity about the Civil War. They didn’t pan a speech that slighted the quest for justice and civil rights throughout American history.
As a matter of fact, Trump didn’t mention any Confederates at all. He hailed Abraham Lincoln at length and called the Civil War “the struggle that saved our union and extinguished the evil of slavery.” He cited the repulse of Pickett’s charge and quoted the Battle Hymn of the Republic. He said we must defend “the principles that propelled the abolition of slavery in America” and “the ideas that were the foundation of the righteous movement for civil rights.”
It would be difficult to get a more textbook expression of the American civic religion than the speech at Rushmore. It would be difficult to get a more wide-ranging appreciation of the warriors, inventors, adventurers, reformers, entertainers, and athletes who have made the country what it is. It’d be difficult to get a more affirming account of the greatness of America and its meaning to the world.
Trump’s attacks on what he called “a new far-left fascism” and a cultural revolution “designed to overthrow the American Revolution” were indeed hard-edged, but who can doubt the basic truth of the claims?

FBI Director Christopher Wray on Tuesday warned Americans that the Chinese government’s theft of American information is taking place on so large a scale, suspected incidents make up nearly half of his bureau’s counterintelligence cases.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Hudson Institute in Washington, Wray said that Chinese thefts amount to “one of the largest transfers of wealth in human history,” and that the American people are the victims.
“Of the nearly 5,000 active FBI counterintelligence cases currently under way across the country, almost half are related to China,” Wray said. “And at this very moment, China is working to compromise American health care organizations, pharmaceutical companies and academic institutions conducting essential COVID-19 research.”

A Hong Kong businessman issued a dire warning on Monday, saying a Joe Biden win would be a win for the Chinese communists and a loss for the free world.
Elmer Yuen told the Polish show Against the Tide TV a Biden presidential victory would be disastrous for freedom.
“Biden is bad news,” Yuen said. “Health-wise — I don’t even think he is healthy,” he added, pointing at his head.
He said it is a “joke” the Democrats are running him.
“While he was vice president under Obama, he was in charge of the relationship with China. He was directly in charge and he let (them) go,” Yuen, who is in the United States advocating for freedom in Hong Kong, said.
“He let the Chinese build a military installation in the South China Sea. He let the PRC (People’s Republic of China) basically get away with murder,” he continued.
“His family, brother and son,” he said, referring to sibling James Biden and son Hunter Biden, “have been making huge amounts of money from China.”
Yuen alleged the Bidens are “a very corrupted family,” and disputed Biden’s statements that he’s anti-communist China.
“If he gets elected it will be hopeless for Hong Kong, hopeless for Taiwan, and hopeless for the free world because that would mean the PRC would have won against the free world,” he said, “and it’s over. Game over.”

Monday on Fox News Channel’s “The Ingraham Angle,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo responded to criticism from former National Security Advisor Susan Rice’s attack on President Donald Trump and his administration’s foreign policy, particularly regarding Russia, a day early on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Pompeo called into question Rice’s track record on the Sunday morning national public affairs show and pointed to the round-robin of appearances Rice made on those programs in 2012 following the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
“To hear Ambassador Rice talk that way is just crazy,” Pompeo said. “You know, she has a history of going on Sunday shows and lying. You all remember that — back in 2012, she went on five Sunday shows and Ambassador Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Glenn Doherty and Tyrone Woods had all perished under her administration watching Benghazi, Libya. She went on and made up a story about a video and a protest when she knew full well that this was a terror attack. She did so because it was politically convenient to say that.
