Knox County Passes Mandatory Indoor Face Masks

The mandates, at least the ones in and around Nashville, make no sense to me.
Same for Knoxville and all the other ones I’ve seen. All I hear is how dangerous this virus is and how heartless you are if you don’t wear a mask and social distance but then the rules are selectively applied. I truly pray that common sense kicks in at some point.

Right. So 99% of the time the mask isn’t actually helping anything and, as many have pointed out in here, could make things worse due to people constantly touching their mouth and nose area, among other reasons.

It’s a freaking virus. We can’t cure it. We can’t stop it. We’ve already slowed it so the hospitals weren’t overwhelmed. Let’s get this thing over with.

You can’t just say “either it stops 100% of everything or 99% of the time it does nothing.” Neither of those is true and there’s a ton in between.

I wouldn’t say we’re out of the woods yet with hospitals, especially in the South, but I hope you’re right

Particles come in different sizes and covid-19 ranges from 0.06 to 0.14 microns while N95 masks only filter particles greater than 0.30 microns. So, if the covid-19 particle is attached to a larger particle (say a water droplet) then it should be stopped by a N95 mask. Having said that, there are oxygen deprivation concerns with N95 masks especially if you have specific health issues (Stanford researchers reengineer COVID-19 face masks | Stanford News). In addition, many experts who believe this virus can aerosolize (Can COVID-19 Spread Through the Air?).

And, no, the cloth masks people are wearing do not come anywhere near stopping 50% (e.g., 1 layer of Kona cotton + 1 layer of flannel only stops 15% of particles which are greater than 0.3 microns).

Regardless, you are arguing for the exact opposite of what we should be doing which is to achieve herd immunity as fast as possible and healthy people who are not at risk wearing masks slows that down. Those who are at-risk should take precautions. I understand your sentiment and intentions which are all good but, unfortunately, are not the right course of action. No need to carry on our back-and-forth as I can agree to disagree.
I rather have a vaccination developed than hope for herd immunity. If I catch COVID at age 59 with type 2 diabetes diagnosed within the last two years I may not make it. If you watched the NBC report , there is no doubt wearing a mask can help stop the spread and that is what the medical professionals are stating. I have not heard one expert say it is 100% foolproof.

Ok. 100% of the time a mask really isn’t doing anything. How many seconds a day do you spend sneezing or coughing when you aren’t sick? That’s the only time it can help at all but all it helps with are the bigger particles. The rest of the time the particles can go through the mask and the small ones still get through when you sneeze and cough. That includes the particles that spread COVID. You know it’s true because even all of the medical experts say the masks don’t protect you from getting the virus. If they don’t prevent the virus from coming in then why in the world would they prevent it from going out?

Isolation is your best bet.

Having spent the weekend downtown and followed the mask ordinance, I don’t get the impression I’m that much safer. There is no standard. I saw plenty of improperly fitted masks. One mask may prevent transfer, one may not. What I did see is people taking on and off mask and adjusting masks. Say you remove your mask to eat and set it on a contaminated surface, then you put the mask back on. Now you have a nice Covid rich cocktail. The only way masks would make a difference is if they are standardized and single use.

Imagine the screen on your window. It will stop a fly from getting in. But if someone is smoking on the porch it isn’t going to stop anything from coming in. That’s what we’re dealing with in a virus that is microscopic.

Small, poorly ventilated areas like cars, planes, buses, elevators where there cannot be spacing are where the viral load will be high enough to infect.

I watched all the mask wearing at church this morning. What a circus. More than half the congregation had their nose hanging out. Not that it would have help the mask effectiveness anyway.

It’s a pity watch how the public has gotten so panicked over this.

I asked one guy I know if he washed his hands before he put his mask on. He said no. I told him there was no telling what he had brought closer to his face and was breathing in.

But hey at least he can walk up to anyone and sneeze without covering his face!

Do you see how stupid this all is?!

The prevention is to stop droplets that the virus is attached to. Masks definitely do this, but is also why masks must be single use. Virus particles can still get through but not in the volume. Remember, it’s viral load we’re talking about. Kind of like sperm. It takes thousands to get the one to the egg. It takes a pretty good viral load to infect.

Why can’t you wash and reuse?

That’s the point. Wearing the masks protects others more than you. So if everyone was wearing one ...? the spread would be slowed down. Duh!

The fact that people are arguing about masks because they don’t like wearing them/being told what to do

The role and scope of government is always a valid conversation. As is if we should even be wearing a mask given the initial guidance was against masks and slowing the spread only matters if hospitals are overwhelmed (they’re not).

The initial guidance was that masks helped but we shouldn't be rushing to buy them up, so that the people who needed them could get them. Then we made many more. Hardly a contradiction.

Slowing the spread doesn't "only" matter if hospitals are overwhelmed, and a number in the South are heading in that direction.

It's contrarian, conservative BS masquerading as some high-level conversation about liberty and "tHe RoLe Of GoVeRnMeNt"

Unless anyone touches their mask, doesn't wash their hands before and after using it, or reuses it. What percentage of people strictly adhere to those rules?

Because while I wouldn't be breathing in any germs someone unmasked might breathe out, they'd still ride along on my clothes and skin. Simple. If everyone covers their nose and mouth, it makes a huge difference. Not being willing to do that little is stupid and selfish.

Would you be willing to not support mandatory vaccinations if people agree to wear masks?

Why would anyone go near someone if their pants were off? Same can be said for people not wearing masks....stay away from them. I choose to wear a mask if I'm going to be in close proximity to people, but I don't believe people should be forced under law to wear one either. I know the risk of going into public places, and by going into them I accept the risk regardless who is or is not wearing a mask.

This is common sense. However...

I would be curious to know how many of these people that refuse to wear a mask were out here 15-20 years ago supporting legislation that forced restaurants to go non-smoking. The same principle would apply. If you don't want to be around cigarette smoke, don't go to areas where it is likely to occur.

On a positive note , all those booger eaters are building up their immunity while they wait around for a vaccine . Yes I know that’s terrible , true but terrible . We were outside mowing , I’m hot and don’t care . I’ll try to do better .😂

I've said before that I truly believe that if they mandate masks/muzzles, they next thing they will mandate will be vaccines. The natural impulse of most people is to want to nip this kind of encroachment in the bud.

It can be slowed down if someone with COVID sneezes or coughs into theiR mask instead of on another person.
