Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

My whole week so far as well... came out of the weekend with 2 drums of catalyst palletized ready to ship to Turkey. Only problem is I allowed the customer to handle the shipping. Won't go into all the mundane details but ended up repackaging half of it into 5-gal pails yesterday and still waiting for them to send me their DHL labels...

You ship chemicals internationally. Do you have a lot of regulators/oversight with what you're shipping and to whom?

As long as I am not trying to ship to one of the sanctioned countries (e.g. NoKo, Iran, etc.) it's pretty straightforward.

Some of the materials I ship are "NonHaz" (e.g. precious metal catalyst or molecular sieves or alumina beads) but those which are "HazMat" generally require some extra paperwork. There are UN standards for packaging that come into play for HazMat materials, and special "Shippers Declaration of Hazardous Goods" with one form if it's ocean transport and another one if it's going by air.

I sell a good bit of copper based catalysts. Most copper oxide (and/or zinc-oxide) containing materials are Class 9 HazMat if going overseas ("Environmental/Marine Hazard to Aquatic Organisms i.e. you fill your aquarium with copper oxide tablets and it will kill your fish..) but not HazMat for transport by truck or rail within the US (this is DOT's purview)...

FedEx got really intense a couple years ago, returning a couple shipments because I had left out a comma on the HazMat paperwork... so if it's less than 50 kg (and just got a request for 6 kg from a physicist in Poland this morning) I take advantage of the 5 kg exclusion rule and put max. 5 kg in separate 1-gallon UN-rated shippers and don't have to call it hazmat... so sometimes I will ship 6 or 8 small cartons instead of 1 larger container just to simplify the paperwork. Anything larger than 50 kg I don't use FedEx if it's HazMat but various freight forwarders... last month we sent a pallet with several drums of copper catalyst by boat to Taiwan (3rd order in 5 years from that particular gentleman). I have a Korean guy in Dallas who is pretty decent for handling this type shipment for me.

Other than that, any export with a commercial value of $2500 or more requires a filing (Shipper's Export Declaration) with the Dept. of Commerce. FedEx will do this for me (and optionally will create the Commercial Invoice which is the basis for customs/duties at the customer's port of entry), otherwise the freight forwarder will usually file it based on the Commercial Invoice which I generate from my system in such cases.

Thanks for the detail. I really appreciate it. This sounds like a big headache to me.

Have you ever tried to ship to a sanctioned country?

No sir. However I once got ALMOST sucked into a potentially shady deal by an entity supposedly based in Italy...

Had a nice chat here on my own premises with a couple of nice gents from a 3-letter agency.

They wanted me to set up a "sting" by placing a tracking device in a hidden compartment (false bottom) of a drum...

... but I only went so far as to refer my potential "customer" to a fake web site the 3-letter folks created.

It seems Pd catalyst can be used to make some interesting things.

Obviously the 3 letter agency is the NFL. Man, those guys are on top of it, right?

Anybody notice how @grandvol disappeared about the same time Tiger King got locked up? GV was living in Oklahoma right?

I'm not saying they're the same, but has anyone seen them in the same room together?

The thing is, if I had a tiger ranch, there'd be a lot less annoying posters around here and I'd have a bunch of fat tigers.

Oh, if you're going to try to attract my attention using hokey religions or seances, there's a space between Grand and Vol. It's @Grand Vol

Nice to see everyone is well. Also nice to see after eight months I'm still living entirely rent free in the brain of @DinkinFlicka

Before he tries to argue (you know he will) he only made like half a dozen posts about me in one night. That made me feel all special and stuff.

Stay safe ya'll.

30 hours into my work week so far.

Worst part is I feel like I have gotten jack and ish done.
Same here. I’m beyond frazzled. After a rather heated email exchange with my boss involved this morning I sent her only one ending in “it’s time to start picking what doesn’t get done in the short term”. I won’t bother outlining the content of her useless reply.

As soon as I get done telling mine I dont have time for everything she throws more on my plate.

"Well not that I got X off your plate you should have time for Z".
"No we got X off my plate so I could do Y".

I thought you were changing jobs anyway?

Y'all drew the short straws. I love my boss. She takes care of all the clerical work I detest, calls me handsome, and let's me come and go as I please.

Her husband, however, is less fun.

I am madly trying to change jobs and like I said before I even wrote the req! However as it turns out with my seniority and pay grade let’s just say the best describing phrase is “it’s complicated”.

Somethings gotta give though. I’m pretty much openly belligerent with drive bye taskers at this point and I wouldn’t put up with my ****. I’d guess it comes to a head over the next couple of weeks.

Had two phone discussions with her this morning trying to scramble and cover for more piss poor people allocation decisions and I told her flat out I’m taking a 5 day weekend and to leave me alone I need to decompress. Even while I was saying it I was saying to myself “slow your roll down here this is belligerent”.

I am beyond ready to retire.

Sounding more and more like Breaking Bad.
