Alabama football: At least five players have reportedly tested positive for the coronavirus

Masks won’t work for fans or the players for games or practice. The ones that work are hot and smothering. The other masks I see people wear are useless. They wouldn’t prevent a gnat from getting through much less a virus.

Correct. The only masks that are truly effective are the N95. You cannot play in those. I think the masks give people the illusion that they are protected and that’s fine. But they are not effective or necessary.

From what I can tell, the health experts (I’ll refrain from the scare quotes) aren’t ok with thousands of people gathering. I’ve read several articles about the risks although they’re obviously getting less attention these days with so much else going on right now. There’s also growing evidence about outdoors being much safer than indoors that wasn’t as solid even a few weeks ago, which is good news for both protests and sports.
Not sure what you're reading, but its not the same as what I've been reading reading regarding the protestors gathering and health experts not condoning it.

As much emphasis as they have placed on "no gatherings above 10 people" and "you must stay 6 feet apart at all times" for them to come out and say that its not risky for the transmission of the virus in the midst of thousands of people coming together to protest, but its not okay to do that under any other circumstances is complete BS.

Suddenly, Public Health Officials Say Social Justice Matters More Than Social Distance

Officials who pushed strict lockdowns now argue protesters are an exception

Ahh, ya beat me to it ...

From your link (hopefully we’re allowed to do more than just post links here):

“Since then, local public health professionals and leaders have supported the protests, both tacitly and explicitly, despite the increased risks of new coronavirus outbreaks and despite the protests violating their own guidelines.”

That doesn’t sound to me like they’re saying there’s no risk. It sounds like they’re saying the juice is worth the squeeze. You can disagree with someone’s priorities, but having priorities doesn’t make someone a hypocrite.

Yeah. It actually does when you consider the "you're going to kill grandma" if you go to church type of rhetoric that's been used. I don't know of a right to riot and loot. The 1st Amendment guarantees a right to religious worship... even if the government doesn't think it is safe. People were literally being ticketed and threatened with jail for going to church. And you don't see hypocrisy in the reaction to the protests?

The College Football Season Is About To Meet COVID-19

"There is an uncertainty about the 2020 college football season. There seems to be a plan to start the season as players are beginning to take part in what is termed voluntary workouts at various colleges and universities around the country. There seems to be a firm date to start the season in late August and early September. Then there seems to be a worry that the season will end prematurely because of COVID-19. At least that is what Congressman Greg Walden of Oregon said after House Republicans spoke with a number of sports leagues and organizations representatives including National Collegiate Athletic Association President Dr. Marc Emmert. The start of the season is predicated on schools physically being open and in California that is a problem as the state school system is not bringing students back on campus for the fall semester."

The whole foundation for the solutions our "top experts" proscribed is crumbling one pillar at a time... first it was nowhere nearly as deadly as claimed. Then surface transmission was determined not to be significant. Then we learn that it is very unlikely to get infected outdoors. Now this....

Asymptomatic spread of coronavirus is 'very rare,' WHO says

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst was always the smart approach. Blind optimism isn’t good public policy even if it does work out sometimes.

In this kind of situation, an overreaction is less harmful than an under reaction (notice I said less harmful and not without harm before you string up your straw man).

We’ll never know probably what the optimal response would have been in every different place around the world even with hindsight. But all the second guessing that’s been going on is a luxury of not having any actual responsibility.

Everyone who has had to make real decisions has been making very similar decisions regardless of politics throughout this whole time. Most everyone closed at about the same time and everyone is opening up now. That doesn’t make it right or wrong but there’s strength in numbers if you’re having to make important decisions with limited information.

And blind pessimism has cost us billions in wealth and will kill far more people than the virus.

No. It will end up being far more harmful.

Actually, a guy from Germany suggested that we quarantine the old and vulnerable then have the rest go about their business as herd immunity developed. He estimated that herd immunity would be developed within 4 months allowing the old and vulnerable to safely enter society. Unlike the social distancing and shutdown which have never been subject to trial or clinical study... his suggestion was based on the history of viruses and herd immunity cultivation.

You act like businesses closed by choice.

"Regardless of politics"? What world are you living in? This was a political narrative that got out of control from the very start. VERY political bureaucrats have been making all the decisions. Politics caused CDC and others to withhold important information... particularly demographic information that could have helped us all make important decisions to protect vulnerable people.

"BamaInsider noted that Tuscaloosa County alone is dealing with over 800 cases alone. Over 45% of their active cases have emerged in the past couple of weeks. "

in late may masks were n't being worn by many supermarket and many of the big retailers. in tusktown . someone even told me they went to a physicians' office where masks weren't being worn.

guess you should expect this when mayor said "tuscaloosans don't know how to lose.".

Going to church or a football game? You'll die!

Going to burn a municipal building or loot a shoe store? You're fine!

I am embarrassed for each and everyone of you that took this nonsense seriously.

Nothing will happen to the Bama player. Nothing will happen to you or your family. There was never any risk. You were conned.

Since we are posting links. Seems like the CDC and WHO are admitting it was all blown out of proportion.

Asymptomatic spread of coronavirus is 'very rare,' WHO says

Just to be clear, the WHO statement is about people who are truly asymptomatic - those who have no symptoms throughout the course of their illness. People are pre-symptomatic - those who are ill but haven’t yet developed visible symptoms - are considered contagious to others.

Researchers believe very few people are truly asymptomatic. But people with a very mild course of the disease may have considered themselves asymptomatic when they actually weren’t.

The WHO statement is very easy to misunderstand/mischaracterize.
