PPP helps keep the unemployment rate low even when people aren't working. Rather than the government paying people unemployment, they are giving money to companies to pay their workers. So what happens when PPP runs out in late July? Also
Good news: Roughly 3/4 of the rise in unemployment reflects temporary layoffs. There's hope many of these folks will return to work soon.

Bad news: Permanent job loss has risen by over a million since Feb.

If the government, mainly governors would get the hell out of the way and let businesses open up there wouldn't be a need for these huge spending bills. Looking at you John Cooper

Hell it shows what a great President is that he has made you all leftists care about spending and the deficit. Now I don't believe for a minute that caring will last 1 second the next time a socialist antifa dem is elected

I'm not sure why this is being covered as a surprise. It makes perfect sense that the unemployment rate would have gone down since April but that isn't from job creation. It's from people returning from furloughs.
