Systemic Racism

No, in the chemical industry where I work, it’s rooted in the interest of not having a chemical operator show up stoned and push the wrong button and blow up the plant. That’s why we drug test. Has nothing to do with racism. If you could pass the drug test and had some aptitude to learn, we didn’t care if you were purple and from Mars.

The minorities who believe "i shouldn't have to be required to follow said rule/law/procedure because they are inherently racist and therefore i won't" cause the biggest self-harm to their causes than anyone else.

Right, but I think he's saying why does cannabis have this status? Why do so many employers test for modest cannabis use and not for problems with alcohol?

Studies show you can operate a vehicle better on marijuana than you can on alcohol, yet we're not checking drivers who might be hung over from last night but we'll give random piss tests to drivers because we want to find out if they ate a weed brownie 3 weeks ago? I get what you're saying that it's a liability thing and that it's what insurance requires, but why is that the case? I don't think it's racist for people caught in the status quo, but there was something racist about how it became the status quo. A member of congress 100 years ago literally argued in session that all Mexicans are crazy and that they all smoke marijuana, LOL. Those are the roots of the stigma that contributes/leads to marijuana and alcohol being viewed differently today.
Is there a test to determine if you are under the influence of marijuana similar to breath or blood test for alcohol? Serious question, I don't know.

Exactly. This is the answer for those having trouble comprehending.

And in some industries a dt should be a requirement for safety.

You can't show up to work on alcohol either. If you have alcohol in your system when you are tested, you probably aren't getting hired either.

Saying marijuana might be "better" in some aspects than alcohol is like saying "snorting tons of Oxycodones is better than shooting meth". It doesn't mean either are ok, because they aren't, ESPECIALLY in a work environment.

I would fire someone for drug use in an INSTANT and not even blink, i would also fire someone showing up to work drunk

We don’t view it any differently. If your random drug test shows up with alcohol in the blood, you can be gone too. Equal opportunity firing (or not hiring).

You can’t be drunk at work and if you’re drunk at an interview you probably won’t have much chance of getting hired to begin with.

Is there a test to determine if you are under the influence of marijuana similar to breath or blood test for alcohol? Serious question, I don't know.
marijuana effects people different physiology both in blood and effects on your brain.
Some people get a high and nothing else and it goes away
Some people get paranoid, and those with mental illness, it increases psych related manic episodes and raises homicidal/suicidal thoughts
Some people mix it with other drugs and the effects are worse.

A test will show it's in people's system, but there is no "time" like ETOH or other drugs where you can reasonably assume WHEN they used it.

One of the two reasons that marijuana isn't legal everywhere is because
- it still is a drug that has several side effects that cause harm to people, and is a gateway drug to other drug usage among those with addiction issues
- There is no valid test available like i stated above which gives a "timeline" of its usage, which would have serious effects in DUI/Public Intoxication type issues if it were legal

Not that I know of. But it stays in the blood for a period of time and it also stays in the hair longer. Some companies collect a hair sample as part of the test.

Alcohol stays in your system for hours. Weed stays in your system for weeks. In this case, that's a problem with not viewing them differently. They'll only catch you if you are drinking on the job, but they'll catch you for smoking on your own time.

My work tests for both THC and alcohol (among other things).

Main reason is there currently is not a test that can determine if you are high on MJ at work. There is for alcohol.

I could see pre-employment and even random testing (for MJ) going away if there were a spot test for intoxication.

Good point

Imo the issues in this country are more about rich vs poor than about racism. Poor people in general have a much harder life. We all know this. Poor blacks are much more concentrated in the cities while poor whites are much more spread out and actually outnumber poor blacks. When the poor are concentrated in any area, crime goes up regardless of the color of the poor people.

They only way out is education and parental involvement. The government actually has policies that help prevent this. We all know what those are but we refuse to be honest with ourselves and demand they be changed. It is up to individuals to make the changes. The government can’t do it for you. You want to see your kids have a better life, then emphasize education and responsibility for their actions. A lot of parents don’t do that because it requires a lot of work. It’s not easy. If parents did this, it would only take 2 generations for the poor to get out of poverty.

Honestly feel like #4 has the strongest correlation.

Edit: I also feel like this isn't unique to the black community.

It's really weird....

My wife is from the Philippines. Her family was extremely poor. I mean third world poor, not American poor.

We own a home there now which her mom and brother live in that is a mansion to them, about 2100 sq ft and cost me about 65k to build back in 2009.

When we visit we will normally buy a whole pig or two. About 50 people like cousins and neighbors will come over and they will each get a part of the pig...any part.

We will then just sit around and play cards and drink coffee and they are so thankful and so happy and it makes me feel like a total POS. I will buy some of the kids in the city a coke or an icecream while I am out, kids with torn clothes and dirt on their elbows. The joy they get from just drinking a coke.

I truly feel materialism has destroyed this country. When the joy of having a child was replaced with "is it financially right for me" we as a society jumped the shark.

I'm done with conversing in this thread. There is nothing constructive about these conversations.
Thats one thing I hate about all this. And I'm even guilty of it, but are we actually going to change anything when this is over. Each side has their own opinion and neither is going to give

People who have never left the United States will never understand that level of poor.

I guess they think if you smoke on your own time, you might do it before you come to work and there’s no way to test for that. Again, nobody wants a stoned chemical operator in a plant. Sorry, I don’t make the rules. Them that has the gold makes the rules. That’s the way it is till somebody changes it. If people don’t like it, they don’t have to work there.
