I am a 67-year-old white man whose soul is troubled by the attitudes of many on here. My heart grieves for George Floyd and others. I want to speak to white people here because I believe we need to do some serious soul-searching. I'm not saying that other groups don't need to, also, but I believe in looking in to see what is within me before I look out to see what is within others.
As one who believes the Bible, I believe all people throughout history have failed in many ways to live righteously and justly in their relations with their fellow humans. I don't think we have suddenly arrived morally, and that we today have improved so much that we now treat others unfailingly as we should. I think many of us would agree that we are often more blind to our own faults, than we are to the faults of others.
I know many of you do not share my Christian convictions, and I'm not here to argue. As a follower of Jesus, I desire to please Him and obey Him. But, if that is not where you are at, I hope you will still see that soul-searching is profitable to help us to live a better life.
I want to share some verses from the Bible.
Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me and know my anxious thoughts;
And see if there be any hurtful way in me,
And lead me in the everlasting way. Psalm 139:23-24
In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 7:12.
