I think you're just trying to play the emotional bs route here and point fingers at the people that clearly understand there is a level that is acceptable versus this scorched earth economic strategy.

And yes the threshold would be lower if this killed young people more. Young people are valued more. This is a fact and that is how it should be.

Forget jobs and lively hoods, public policy sacrifices lives for personal convenience.

If keeping everything foggy helps you pretend we aren't forced to put a price tag on lives, then that's fine. Doesn't make it less true.

I agree with this approach - and I think that it would have been an even more important approach in states with lower active infection rates than NY (and other northeast states). The issue there was that the virus was going to be carried into the facilities by the staff - the odds of being infected were just too high to really keep it out of the nursing homes.

I don't know if you saw my post from earlier today, but I spent time this morning looking into this. I wanted to look at total nursing home deaths vs. the number of residents in these facilities; computing a probability of death for nursing home residents so far by state. Interestingly, New York fared better than many other northeast states with a lower probability of death in their nursing homes than New Jersey, Massachusetts, or Connecticut.

I also computed the relative risk of someone in a nursing home vs. the general risk of a 75+ year old person in the total population. The relative risk was even lower for NY nursing home patients given the extent of infection in the state and yet NY had only about 15% more nursing home deaths than New Jersey despite having roughly double total deaths.

In the last ten minutes I have seen news that Pence WILL self isolate, and that he WILL NOT. Reports also that some members of the administration will, and some won't. And that Trump is in a usual rage over how weak it all looks.

The crapshow that is this White House continues.

I wouldn’t use the DOW as a measuring stick but we do put a price tag on life all the time. Actuaries exist for a reason.

Chemically, we're worth about $5

Perhaps the DOW would be a poor measuring stick. Of course, Insurance companies can back into the value of human worth. But that's subjective... How much is a day worth to you, a week, a month, a year, ten? Is an American life worth more than a Chinese life? Does supply need to be taken into account? Do we take into account skill sets, education, earning potential etc? Can we measure the priceless human will to live as a commodity against economic impact?

A lot to unpack. But what I would say is that I have seen pshyc docs predict over 75,000 suicides because of the lock down. Kind of makes this close to a wash. That’s not including a the huge spike in domestic Violence we are seeing. What I do know is you can’t expect people to lock themselves up. Well over a million people died during the Spanish flu. People are going to die. This will be a second flu. Keep people who are in danger self quarantine. Let everyone else go out.
