It is not a fallacy, but the sheer number of recruits has contributed to the ranking being so high. It's a long time until the final day to sign scholarship papers. But there is no doubt Pruitt is a awfully good recruiter.

I would give a resounding yes to that question. Pruitt seems to be targeting recruits that fit our system and needs. Butch on the other hand recruited blindly to inflate the class ranking.

Am I the only one who doesn't remember this being a thing?

"he also made some massive mistakes like not taking Amari Rogers as a package deal with Tee Higgins"

The fact that ole Butchy Boy went a cycle without recruiting linemen should put the comparisons to bed.

I always go back to this example. About 3 years into Butch's tenure he was still recruiting 250lb offensive linemen in the SEC. He started one that was a true freshman in Neyland against Alabama after his normal injury list mounted. Almost got Hurd and Kamara killed. That was all I needed to know about Jones. Then after Preston William's transferred, he tried to shove freshmen wide receivers in the radio like the thin skinned dweeb he was.

This point has probably already been made but I feel like Pruitt has a better picture of what he wants his team to be. Butch had good classes but I think he would recruit people solely based on their star rating so he would have a good class and not what we needed. Just look at how abysmal our line play became under Butch as evidence.

We had a lot of attrition during Butch's tenure...not to mention the injuries/poor development.

I'll give it to Butch he was a salesman which made him a good recruiter, the problem was he recruited players like Dormady that didn't fit our offensive system at all and didn't have the know how to develop players. He is a star gazer as most fans are, difference with Pruitt he takes guys that he sees promise in and that's fits our systems offense and defense
ding ding ding... this post wins the interwebs. I'll take 3 star guys that fit versus 5 stars that don't all day and twice on Saturday. There are more 3 and 4 star guys than 5 star guys. Think Moneyball. I'll take the depth.

The very simple answer is "YES". Butch had to sign 30 players to get top 15 classes and then he wasted the talent.
Not true. Recruiting services count only the top 25 players in a class. Before Butch destroyed the program, he was recruiting on an elite level. He just disillusioned players and failed to develop them, and then recruiting declined. The classes of '14 and '15 were outstanding--the best classes of the last 15+ years and comparable with some of Fulmer's best classes, and, by rankings, probably better than the 2021 class that Pruitt ends up with. But, he lost quality players and didn't develop many guys, particularly OL and DL. With a quality S&C program, a leader at the helm and some better coaching, we could have been really good. With a poor S&C program and a weak leader, the slide ensued. Imagine what Pruitt and his staff could have done with the likes of Dobbs, Tuttle, McKenzie, Kamara, Hurd, Barnett, Sutton, Moseley, Malone, Phillips, Gaulden, Kongbo, Sapp, Kelly, the Berry Bros., Vickers, and the other studs on the '16 roster. We were loaded and Butch blew it.

Butch shifted his focus to Emory Jones and told Lawrence that he wouldn’t be a good fit for his style of play.

Lawrence the same guy who idolized Peyton Manning and liked Tennessee growing up.

But, where was this documented? Rumors become legend and legend becomes historical fact around here sometimes.

The 14&15 classes had a grand total of 1-5* player out of 60 players signed. If Pruitt keeps this class together with the players we are suppose to get on the 10th we will almost be where those best Jones classes were.
