2020 - Tennessee – The strength of our team this year starting out looks to remain in the areas of talent and defensive success rate. The glaring weakness we face is our success rate on offense. I’m pretty optimistic that we’ll figure out our linebacker rotation and replacing Warrior shouldn’t be too tough so I’m not too worried about our defense this year. I think the success of our team this year hinges on the quarterback and receivers, including tight ends. Running backs and offensive line should be good.
09/05/20 - Charlotte – The strength of the 49er team this year should be their offense but owing to our talent advantage and strength on defense this should be a blowout for us. The weakness of the 49ers should be their defense which may give us an opportunity to tune up our offense a bit headed into the season.
09/12/20 - at Oklahoma – We may have the better defense when we go to Norman but almost everyone believes the Sooners will have the better offense. Yes, they lost a ton of production from their 2019 offense but that same thing happens to Georgia, Alabama, and other solid programs year after year and yet they remain perennial powers. The reason is a combination of talent and coaching. The success rate is as much a reflection of coaching as it is talent. So if a team has the talent and a lofty success rate, all things being considered, their program is set up to maintain a high level of success year in and year out.
09/19/20 - Furman – FCS blowout
09/26/20 – Florida – Again if we haven’t figured out a solution for our offense, Grantham will shut it down and our defense will end the game worn out.
10/03/20 – Missouri – Other than Furman, Missouri is the only other team on our schedule this year where we have an advantage in the rankings in every single metric in the table posted.
10/10/20 - @ South Carolina – If Bobo can fixed their offense their defense can keep them in the game and given that it’s in their house, we may be in for a fight. In 2019 we really ran up the score on them but it wasn’t our offense that did much of the extra damage. It was special teams with Bituli blocking a punt and recovering it in their endzone for a TD and Callaway returning another Punt for a TD.
10/24/20 – Alabama – After the bye week we face off against our eons old nemesis. I haven’t figure out how we can beat these guys this year, at least not yet. If you look at our game with them last year we were probably within a TD of them and just when you’re thinking it may be possible, Guarantano happens.
10/31/20 - @ Arkansas – The only paper advantage the razorbacks have in this game is it’s on their turf and if Pittman hasn’t shown anything up to this point in the season it may end up seeming more like a neutral field game.
11/07/20 – Kentucky – We’ll be out to stretch our home winning streak to 17 in a row against the Wildcats and while they should never be taken lightly these days, at least not by us, I think we should extend the streak.
11/14/20 - @ Georgia – If the Bulldogs can’t pass the ball this could be a low scoring game. I don’t know anything but it seems like Kirby is under performing. He obviously knows defense, much the same as Pruitt and Muschamp, but it seems all three are having a tremendous level of difficulty fielding an elite offense, regardless of how much talent they may have.
11/21/20 – Troy – While Troy had some success on offense last year they lost a lot and don’t have the talent to reload and while they have a lot of returning production on defense they had almost no success with those guys last year.
11/28/20 - @ Vanderbilt – Mason may already have received his termination notice before this game takes place. If not, he almost certainly will be handed his walking papers after the game is over.
Special note: It was interesting to see some of our guys in the 2020 recruiting class get bumps as we headed to the final evaluations for that cycle. I don’t think we’re in a position to get a lot of the high profile guys right now. Obviously we’re getting some and more than most but we want to compete at the very top so we need more. There’s not that many of those elite guys. I think our staff, and Pruitt in particular, has a knack for talent evaluation. I think the reason we take a lot of under the radar guys early on in a recruiting cycle is because they are exceptionally good talent without the higher profiles.
I thought our receiver room in the last few years was lacking in elite receiver talent. They were okay but we were sort of limited in what we could do. Obviously, Jennings was a yac monster but he wasn’t an elite receiver. Callaway wasn’t much of a yac guy from what I could see. I wasn’t ever impressed with Callaway’s route running. Actually, I thought Jennings was better and that shouldn’t have been the case. Callaway improved, especially his last year but we needed better.
I’m hoping Gibbs is ready to go. The thing with Gibbs is he was a superstar as a junior in high school then he had an automobile accident. He literally thought he was going to die. It messed him up enough that he lost a lot of the immortality that he had previously. He still wasn’t recovered while he was at Georgia and a lot of outsiders sort of gave up on him. He has tremendous talent but he also has to get past the after-effects of that near death experience. If he can, and he did create some buzz here last year, then we have a 5-star receiver. I also think Hyatt and Calloway with their speed, athleticism, and skill sets have the potential to be elite SEC receivers. Those three guys could be a huge and perhaps instant upgrade to our receiving corps. Now we just need to figure out who we can most count on to get the dang ball to them. jmo.
