Holly, at first, was considered an extension of Pat, who was the REAL star of Tennessee recruiting -- even after she'd passed. But Holly's problem was -- and recruits didn't know it until it was too late -- that she wasn't head coach material. Only after they'd each heard the phrase "I don't know" 20 times did they finally start to realize that, well, she actually DIDN'T. It was plain to see reality set in for each of those highly-ranked players as, one by one, the excitement of playing at Tennessee drained right out of them.
I'll always believe that recruits deeply wanted to believe that playing for Holly would be the next-best-thing to playing for Pat, everyone's actual reason at that time for wanting to come to Tennessee -- to breathe that air that, for a while, still was in the program. But over time they were each disillusioned enough to check out nearly altogether toward the ends of their careers. It was the saddest thing to watch, over and over again, that I've ever seen sports-wise.
But now we have Kellie, and I sure would like to see everyone give her a chance to build confidence with recruits. Holly inherited a program that was hurting and struggling to get back to Final Fours, but Kellie inherited a program that was struggling to reach the NCAA Tournament, period.
It's apples to oranges, and so Kellie deserves way more time to prove her mettle before giving up on her. I fully believe she has it in her.
I was dismayed by CHW from the gitgo, even posting my ititial post to fire her,,,but on year five, when she had all HER own recruits and chosen staff, did I begin to give her the benefit if the doubt again... Members here accused me of flipping. . . But my feeling was if she was going to succeed it would have to be by year 5 bc with that year, all influences of Pat Summitt would be gone. And all excuses were used up in years 1-4.
For Coach K it won't be that many years for me to make up my mind.
She inherited a fine nucleus.
She cleaned out the prior staff from day one, so no residual staff uncertainties
She was following a much weaker coaching staff and HC than did Holly so instead of players measuring her by Pat,, they measure her by Holly.
I give Coach K four years to bring this university back to top 5 status
It is what I would give myself given the above influences and it is fair to give her the same
To give her less than four is unfair unless the program goes into immediate backwards slide and I see no indication of this right now
The things I expect to see bettered this year,,,are not as much win-loss stats as much as growth in areas in which I saw no growth with CHW's tenure
namely:
- Better progression of the players individual skills and play, both, in and off season
- Advancement in game calling (timeouts, subbing with purpose and not just to give everybody PT,, stagnation of offense in movement and scoring,, accountability, but not punishment for correctable situations on the floor,,,things like unforced turnovers and aloof play)
- More focus on "can't miss" recruits (not every recruit with a galaxy of stars behind their name are desired...but certain known recruits are without question players we need to get no matter what the need is).
To give a finality grade to Coach K now is to be incomplete in assessment. She has her own perception of needs that she is filling right now and I agree with the players taken (Salary is an athletic guard of the Jordan mold, Tess is a shooter, Keyen is a banger, Marta is a good in-the-arc ballhandler who can stretch the defense...three of these can help with the ballhandling on bringdowns)...I do see a need for a grad-transfer backup PG but if we are scouting and recruiting to fill this need next year with the likes of a Brooklynn Miles type I am ok with going into the season as we are so Jordan can have the same chance Jaz had to bloom.
